Clash of Cultures
Nick Strong Oct 2013
This is a note,
That I wrote,
With the finest nib.
Then mailed to you.
Which you read,
Then pondered,
And mulled,
Contemplated.
Then wrote
A carefully
Crafted reply.
You paused just,
A second,
Before pressing
SEND.

When the World Smiles
Nick Strong Oct 2013
When the world smiles,
The Sun shines,
When the world cries,
The rain falls.
When the world hiccups,
A volcano erupts.
When the world feels alone,
The snow blankets.

Do we ever listen?

When the World Fell Apart
Nick Strong Oct 2013
When the world fell apart, no-one listened
To the splintering timbers, to the cracking ice,
When the world fell apart, no-one noticed
The carbon tasting water or the smoke filled air
When the world fell apart, no-one spoke,
Of rancid, rotting plastics, or net drowning dolphins.

When the world fell apart, everyone forgot her name,
EARTH.

A Year
Nick Strong Oct 2013
In your presence, a year,
Is but a heartbeat, a small,
Measure of time.
A glimpse of infinity.
Tell me you felt it, held it,
Nurtured it, cherished it
A year of your time.

Custard Cream
Nick Strong Oct 2013
There’s always time for a custard cream,
Taken at any point of the day;
With milk or
Tea,
There’s always time for a custard cream,
Advice taken, or given,
Take a moment,
To share the delights
With coffee, or
Juice.
There’s always time for a custard cream;
   Share it,
Break it,
Dunk it!
There’s always one more time
For that
Last custard cream.

Tree
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Aching twisted limbs, gnarled and torn,
Wind battered, weathering and worn.
What stories can it tell?
Through generations of sunshine,
Through decades of rain,
Storm battered, weathered in pain.
What stories can it tell?

May ...
Nick Strong Oct 2013
May the sun, shine on your shoulders.
May your breeze continue to blow.
May storms always sidestep you.
May the shadows leave you in peace,
And light scatter the darkness.
May, struggles be surmountable.
May, each corner, you turn,
Bring happiness within reach.

May you live in peace with your fellow man
May friendship always sit beside you,
May integrity keep you safe,
May it shield you from all harm
Amore propre be your watch word.
May you know a calmness within.
May the wind always blow you,
Safely towards my door.

Lou Reed R.I.P.
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Clouds scud,
Just the way they always do.
Wind rustles through trees,
As it always does.
Sky turning shades of blue beneath yellowing sun.
Just today the world seems a litter sadder,
This place a little smaller,
Now your voice no longer heard.

Autumn
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Today,
Through my open window,
Autumn blew,
Her gnawing breath.
A murky reminder,
That Fall has laid down,
Her claw on
A misty world.

Drive
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Came here by car,
Rode in the fast lane, past,
Concrete avenues all lined,
With suburban memorabilia.
Seen the sunrise cross the asphalt
Trundled down country lanes,
cattle tamed.

Across war torn highways,
Miles stretch out, as
The highway passes by
Feel I’ve been chasing
Down shadows,
Across endless plains
Have seen the broken hearts,
Through cracked windscreens.
Watched teardrops spatter,
Cross a dusty windshield
As a rainbow glistens
In the corner of my eye.
There’s a reason these express ways,
Reach towards the horizon.

Have travelled here,
Came by car,
But
Don’t know where
Here is.

SMM
Slow moving music.
Sleepy musical mood.
Sweeping manoeuvring minuet.
Soaring melody momentarily.
Sensitive meaningful melodies.
Sound mad maiden.
Soul musical mate.
Soul madly made.
Soul Mate Mine.

Picture of You
Nick Strong Oct 2013
A picture of you smiling,
Fading in black and white,
Torn and gone.
I smile back,
Tears.
Oh, where did those,
Years go?
You were so,
Vibrant and bright.
Shining like a beacon,
Against the darkness.
Now all that remains.
Is this picture of you.

(for my mother)

Winter Once Again
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Broken heart on shattered stone,
Frozen feelings on cracked ice.
Like the leaves falling from the trees,
The winter returns once more.

The Potato
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Earthy mottled brown,
Pomme de terre
The humble spud,
When not covered in mud;
Chipped, boiled or mashed,
Steamed roasted or hashed.
First the Incas of Peru,
Used them in a stew.
Now the tubers grown in space,
To further the human race.
Chopin, Mozart, and Vivaldi,
Can all be bought at Aldi.
(Other supermarkets are available.)
(More varieties are saleable.)
A versatile Maris Piper,
Couldn't be any riper,
When served perfectly baked.

This Heart

Daily, in motion with the moon.
I hold it in my hand open, unprotected,
Ready for you.

Breakfast
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Marmalade,
Tangy orange heaven.
Chunked to the max
Smothers toast.
A bite, a crunch.
That citrus burst.
A sigh,
A slurp of coffee.
Ready to tackle the day.

One Star
Nick Strong Oct 2013
One star for each person,
Long gone, but not forgotten.
A gentle reminder that,
Each stars a soul,
Woven and sewn
With silvery threads
Stretching for the moon,
Blinking, flashing, calling,
Cascaded memories
From each star
A Soul

Mushy Peas
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Minty green and mean,
Mushy pea clean.
Add to the plate,
Of your best mate.
Mushy peas and chips,
Raised to the lips.
Believe me when I say,
A sensation so intense,
Will leave you, in suspense.
Mushy peas
Minty green, yet supreme.

In the Moment
Nick Strong Oct 2013
She said.
He said.
It doesn't matter,
What they said.

She touched.
He touched.
It doesn't matter,
What they touched.

She heard.
He heard.
It doesn't matter,
What they heard.

She felt.
He felt.
It doesn't matter,
What they felt.

It doesn't matter,
It was theirs
In that moment.

Gentle Whispers
Nick Strong Oct 2013
Speaking silently,
Through gentle whispers.
A hushed voice telling tales,
Brushes across the grass.
I hear it calling my name
Softly, achingly whispering
From a time long since gone.

You Turn.
Nick Strong Sep 2013
You turn,
Walk away.
I call,
You twist,
And we stop
And Stare.
You smile,
Then whirl
And are
Gone.
I sit and I …

Eternity
Waits.
Life moves
Me,
Across passages
Of time.

A Fleeting,
Glimpse,
Corner of
My eye.
You are,
There
With that
Smile.
My breath
Stops,
My heart
Lurches…

You turn,
Again!
Walk away
Once more!
And are gone,
I sit
And
I break.

Of Hobbits and Mushrooms.
Nick Strong Sep 2013
I am told that Bilbo, before his
Adventures began, would walk, the
Shire to seek the queen of the fungi.
To search was the compulsion.
Driven by taste, for the mysterious
Fruit of the forest floor.
When asked, he would say,
To savour the wild delight has nothing to compare,
To the humble taste of a spud, or sprout,
Just an ecstasy of unparalleled delight.
Knowing you have found the woody nutty treasure.
Of the queen of the forest floor.
Tis the biggest adventure a hobbit needs
To test his might against the mighty mushroom.

But then he had yet to meet ...
A wizard and a dwarf.

Glue
Nick Strong Sep 2013
For these few moments,
Wrapped in glue,
I am focused on you.

For these few moments,
Wrapped in glue,
I am eclipsed by you.

For these few moments,
Wrapped in glue,
I am haunted by you.

For these few moments,
I’m totally immersed,
In the light of
You…
