Alone at the bar
As I finished the show
I caught his eye and he nodded
‘Hello’
I watched as he drained the last slug from his glass
Ordered another, and muttered
‘Hey Lord, kiss my ***!’

He wasn’t a drunkard or some down and out
Just a good guy who needed to let the pain out
So I packed my guitar
And pulled up a stool
His tears filled his shot glass
Then he said ‘I can see you’re no fool’
But I lost her today
I watched her slip away,
I cried as she tried, but she couldn’t hang on.
Then she closed her eyes,
And I had to say goodbye
There should be some other way
But I’m too alone and he cried

‘Lord,take me instead
or take me too
There’s nothing much that I ever ask of you
But I’m down on my knees
It’s all  I can do
So take me instead
Or take me too

I don’t believe in a
Higher plan
There’s nobody up there
God’s just a man
And I’m sorry to burden you
But I lost my girl today
And you’ve got a kind face
Then I cried when he told me
Just what he’d said

‘Lord,take me instead
or take me too
There’s nothing much that I ever ask of you
But I’m down on my knees
It’s all  I can do
So take me instead
Or take me too
Take me instead
Or take me too
You’ve always been so close
Always a call or ride away
But now I cannot reach you
And I wait for your return.

You’ve always been so close
Always been within my grasp
But now you lay by far off shores
And I wait for your return

I wait for your return
Like a refugee waits on kind shelter
I wait for your return
Like a drowning man
Reaching out his hand
And praying for your touch
I know it won’t be long,
But it’s tearing me apart
And I struggle thru every day
And night brings helpless tears
And I wait for your return.
You're in my heart and everywhere I am.
You hold my soul by your finger tips.
All I've seen in life has made this man
But there is nothing on earth like the touch of your lips.
We have our demons, you and I
But they'll learn to play together, in the sweet by and by.
To be wrapped in your love
Is to know I belong.
And your peace can be heard in the words of my songs.
You waited too long
and love slipped away
I tried to hold on
but you’ve no words to say
The smile that I need
I’ll no longer see

Where are you now?
Are you in love?
Please just come back
This pain is too much
Look in my eyes
And say we’re really thru

I need you tonight
I need you for life
I need you tonight
I need you tonight
You lie so close to me,
Naked, almost touching
Almost. But not quite
My body reacts, in futility
I’ve never been so alone.

I feel your breath on my breast
My heart, just beneath, pounds out your name.
I’ve never been so alone

My eyes see you thru the dim light
I hear sleeper’s voice
Murmured dreams of another life
I’ve never been so alone

I’d give my life, my love.
My tomorrow and all I have.
But I’ve thought myself into the darkest corner
I’ve never been so alone

If love were enough to heal a wound
My love for you could end eternity’s sorrow
It’s strong enough cross oceans of time
I’ve never been so alone.

No crack will let the light get in
No light will escape this velvet covered heart
I’ll give no more to anyone
I’ve never been so alone

The love I have, I’ll keep inside
The wall will be rebuilt
Brick by brick by brick by brick
I’ve never been so alone.

My lifetime’s tears fall like the rain on your window.
Outside your warm embrace
And dismissed.
My heart will homeless wander
I’ve never been so alone.

I kiss your cheek.
Warm, soft.
Like it ever was.
I die inside and fall away

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone

I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
I’ve never been so alone
You have the chance to have something good in your life
A spice rack of excitement
If you’d only turn away from the grill
Open the jar with the dusty lid
And sprinkle a little of its contents over the life you have now
You may awaken a taste that takes you on a journey
You may replace the lid, put the jar back in its place on the rack and never use it again
But once in s while, when you reach for the same old plate to put your cheese sandwich in
You’ll look up and see the jar
And remember the taste of that journey you took.
