"lustral" poems
1672
Lightly stepped a yellow star
To its lofty place—
Loosed the Moon her silver hat
From her lustral Face—
All of Evening softly lit
As an Astral Hall—
Father, I observed to Heaven,
You are punctual.

I bring ye wine from above,
From the vats of the storied sun;
For every one of yer love,
And life for every one.
Ye shall dance on hill and level;
Ye shall sing in hollow and height
In the festal mystical revel,
The rapurous Bacchanal rite!
The rocks and trees are yours,
And the waters under the hill,
By the might of that which endures,
The holy heaven of will!
I kindle a flame like a torrent
To rush from star to star;
Your hair as a comet’s horrent,
Ye shall see things as they are!
I lift the mask of matter;
I open the heart of man;
For I am of force to shatter
The cast that hideth -Pan!
Your loves shall lap up slaughter,
And dabbled with roses of blood
Each desperate darling daughter
Shall swim in the fervid flood.
I bring ye laughter and tears,
The kisses that foam and bleed,
The joys of a million years,
The flowers that bear no seed.
My life is bitter and sterile,
Its flame is a wandering star.
Ye shall pass in pleasure and peril
Across the mystic bar
That is set for wrath and weeping
Against the children of earth;
But ye in singing and sleeping
Shall pass in measure and mirth!
I lift my wand and wave you
Through hill to hill of delight :
My rosy rivers lave you
In innermost lustral light..
I lead you, lord of the maze,
In the darkness free of the sun;
In spite of the spite that is day’s
We are wed, we are wild, we are one.

A Sonnet is a moment’s monument,—
Memorial from the Soul’s eternity
To one dead deathless hour. Look that it be,
Whether for lustral rite or dire portent,
Of its own arduous fulness reverent:
Carve it in ivory or in ebony,
As Day or Night may rule; and let Time see
Its flowering crest impearled and orient.
A Sonnet is a coin: its face reveals
The soul,—its converse, to what Power ’tis due:—
Whether for tribute to the august appeals
Of Life, or dower in Love’s high retinue,
It serve; or, ’mid the dark wharf’s cavernous breath,
In Charon’s palm it pay the toll to Death.

The grey gulls drift across the bay
Softly and still as flakes of snow
Against the thinning fog. All day
I sat and watched them come and go;
And now at last the sun was set,
Filling the waves with colored fire
Till each seemed like a jewelled spire
****** up from some drowned city. Soon
From peak and cliff and minaret
The city's lights began to wink,
Each like a friendly word. The moon
Began to broaden out her shield,
Spurting with silver. Straight before
The brown hills lay like quiet beasts
Stretched out beside a well-loved door,
And filling earth and sky and field
With the calm heaving of their *******
Nothing was gone, nothing was changed,
The smallest wave was unestranged
By all the long ache of the years
Since last I saw them, blind with tears.
Their welcome like the hills stood fast:
And I, I had come home at last.
So I laughed out with them aloud
To think that now the sun was broad,
And climbing up the iron sky,
Where the raw streets stretched sullenly
About another room I knew,
In a mean house -- and soon there, too,
The smith would burst the flimsy door
And find me lying on the floor.
Just where I fell the other night,
After that breaking wave of pain. --
How they will storm and rage and fight,
Servants and mistress, one and all,
"No money for the funeral!"
I broke my life there. Let it stand
At that.
The waters are a plain,
Heaving and bright on either hand,
A tremulous and lustral peace
Which shall endure though all things cease,
Filling my heart as water fills
A cup. There stand the quiet hills.
So, waiting for my wings to grow,
I watch the gulls sail to and fro,
Rising and falling, soft and swift,
Drifting along as bubbles drift.
And, though I see the face of God
Hereafter -- this day have I trod
Nearer to Him than I shall tread
Ever again. The night is dead.
And there's the dawn, poured out like wine
Along the dim horizon-line.
And from the city comes the chimes --
We have our heaven on earth -- sometimes!

destrizado mi espíritu señero;
Noche, Noche Morena...!
Tú me darás, oh Noche, el tibio asilo
de tu regazo, que perfuman exquisitos aromas:
Yo busco tu refugio, oh Noche, oh dulce Noche,
Noche ligeia -toda sutil encanto-;
oh Noche toda amor, toda supraterrena delicia...!
si a ti me doy, Noche Pura;
si en tus brazos y muslos diamantinos me refugio,
Noche Amorosa;
Noche, Noche Elegida!
Yo te amaré con amor infinito,
Noche Eterna;
yo te amaré con amor transitorio,
Noche en Fuga;
yo te amaré con seráfico amor,
Noche Virgen;
yo te amaré con amor turbulento,
Noche en Ascuas;
yo te amaré con amor cerebral, inmaterial, fosforescente, irradiante
Noche Metafísica;
bajo la rósea luz de Venus encendida,
yo te amaré, Noche Insaciable;
Noche Diana;
pérfido te amaré,
Noche Proclive;
yo tempestuoso te amaré,
Noche Vortiginosa;
yo te amaré glacial,
Noche Fría;
yo te amaré furtivo,
Noche Cauta;
yo te amaré cantando a gritos mi pasión,
Noche Desafiante;
tácito te amaré,
Noche Muda.
Noche, Noche Elegida...!
Yo busco tu refugio, oh Noche, oh pulcra Noche,
Noche ligeia -toda sutil encanto-,
oh Noche toda amor, toda supraterrena delicia...:
Esta es la Noche, la Fraterna Noche,
Noche Amante, Noche Lustral...: mi Noche en Éxtasis...!!

Her aspirant heart once ventured
and then she was gone
No bugle at dawn.
The Songstress's cascade
bedeviled by the World unknown,
ivy festooned Water Towers
languished by the winds screech
siphoning the brasses cheer,
the pitch standing hollow
no longer lustral
merely a speckless whisper

no transito la insidia: vuelo ingrávido);
ni pueril amargura (nútrome de inasibles)
penetró en la bicoca.
Lo que vozna o que grazna, rahez, ávido;
lo que repta, serpea, húmido, yerto;
(Job non me peta: ¡oh gafo Jeremías!)
Platino de las noches, similor de los días;
cobre de los crepúsculos; la hecha cuotidiana;

Tu cherches l'oiseau rare,
L'âme effervescente aux yeux d'eau noire,
Annabel Lee, Princesse Brambilla,
Tu es immortelle, tu es Tout-Monde
Entre tumescences et détumescences
Tu renais immortelle.

A morsel of pain quickens the heart,
its gentle breeze becomes a cloud
simply hovering at first, grey and peaceful a refreshing delight to the sun
an innocent melancholy.
With the strike of lightning, the downpour starts, collecting rapidly, until turning into an ocean thundering and churning
demolishing all things beautiful,
cracking and tearing down ivory bridges with every strike. Escalating, booming in all its mightiness
until its roar is all I hear,
the currents pounding against the rhythm of my heart pushing it outwards, stringing along my insides,
turning me inside-out like a coat.
And I,
amidst the endless battering of the waves, struggling to breathe head halfway under
I reach out to the sky in vain
towards the ghost of the ivory bridge
Gasping for air,
salt mixing in salt
my hand stretches up again
looking for someone, anyone
towards a god of a religion forgotten
flailing and struggling, until my lungs burn
water overpowering the fire in my heart.
With a final pull from the endless current
my head goes under
I awake to find myself in a strange desert land, completely dry.
I feel nothing
wrung out, every fragment of pain
every memory of joy
completely evaporated from my once-soaked soul my heart no longer beating,
I am nothing.
