Elevator Talk
Hank Love Mar 20
Well I looked in the mirror
Hoping to see a friendly face
He was a stranger like me
In an unfamiliar place

I said "hello how are you doing"
He said "I won't tell you no lies
I don't know who I am anymore"
And I started to cry

Cause I'm standing here
Talking to myself again
Turning to another stranger
Trying to find a friend
Good Lord I don't know what I'm doing
God knows I've tried
But it looks like more elevator talk
Between him and I

I saw that man again today
Standing in a puddle on a stormy day
I asked him what he's doing Why he's out in the rain
He said the drops on his face helps him hide the pain

Cause I'm standing here
Talking to myself again
Turning to another stranger
Trying to find a friend
Good Lord I don't know what I'm doing
God knows I've tried
But it looks like more elevator talk
Between him and I

The Answer is No
Hank Love Feb 8
"The Answer is No"- a musical number for a play I'm writing.

Mother:
What about a baker

Main
There's one already up the road

Mother
Or you could be a tailor

Main
I don't know a thing about clothes

Mother
You could have a life as a librarian
And put books on the shelves

Main
I'm sorry to disappoint you mother
But That's for someone else

Mother I see more
When people run
I want to soar
To places I've never seen before
I'd like to live out all my dreams
And if it's not what it seems
Then you'll be the first to say I told you so
But until that day mother
The answer is no

Mother
Darling you could fall
Flat on your face

Main
But I could also watch where I step
And yep! I'm still in the race

Mother
You're far too young
I know what you'll go through

Main
Mother it's time to shift I  have a gift
And one day It'll take care of you

Even when I'm awake
I want to dream
When people whisper
I want to scream
I have my voice to be heard
It doesn't sound absurd
And if the worst should happen
I know where to go....
Until that day mother, the answer is no

Mother
But don't you see...

Main
Let me live my dream, mother
The answer is no!

It makes sense.
Words complete a sentence.
We often think about people in our life.
Who will be in our future
And who will be left behind.
The future is exciting because
We'll be just as surprised w
By what will happen.
It has unpredictable timing
And that is what makes it remarkable.
But The Future is a Gentlemen.
It gives us enough time and waits for us
To decide what we do with it.

My Own Version of Clementine (Oh My Darling song)

In the mountains
Thro the valleys
Lived a girl with hair so fine

She had soon been
A poorly widow
And her name was Caroline

Oh my darling
Oh my darling
Oh my darling Caroline
You never saw the roses for you
That I held poor Caroline

And the husband
Whilst he laid there
She remained clung to his side

Never leaving
Always pleading
That she would soon never cry

Oh my darling
Oh my darling
Oh my darling Caroline
You never saw the roses for you
That I held poor Caroline

And the warm days
Turned to winter
And the thorns fell from the pine

When they found her
Thro ice that bound her
And laid to rest dear Caroline

Oh my darling
Oh my darling
Oh my darling Caroline
You were lost but never lonely
Found again, poor Caroline

Darkness is everywhere.
But then again so is light,
As long as the sky is there
To hold up the stars.
It has a brave job, the night sky.
To hold up so much light,
Like the moon and the countless
Amount of stars,
When you're still surrounded by darkness.
But at the same time, the night sky
Doesn't seem so dark.
Just as long as the moon and stars
Are there to keep it company.

A Friend to the Flies
Hank Love Nov 2023
.If I live to be one hundred
(But God forbid I do)
May I never forget to keep my friends many
And my enemies very few.

May I always remember
To only look above
And the only time I look down on another soul
Is to help them stand with love.

For every soul no matter how small
Is to be shown the greatest amount of care
From the strays that crawl upon the ground
To my winged friends in the air

So, While the world holds their own decision
And while they have their right to critize
I will always be one to mention
That I am a friend to the flies.

Would you breath me in
If I gave you my breath
Would you be my friend
If I had nothing left

And if I asked you
If you would take my hand
Would you shy away
Or would you help me stand

Stay with me
I can feel you moving closer now
There's so much to see
Let me show you how

And I would give you
All my dreams tonight
So you wouldn't be afraid
As you turned out the lights
And I would let you see
Everything that you mean to me
If I could only give you my eyes
If I could only give you my eyes

I would lose my sleep
If you felt alone
Every promise I would keep
That you whisper on the phone

But if i grew weak
Would you be at my side
Would you be my strength
With your arms opened wide

Stay with me
I can feel you moving closer now
There's so much to see
Let me show you how

And I would give you
All my dreams tonight
So you wouldn't be afraid
As you turned out the lights
And I would let you see
Everything that you mean to me
If I could only give you my eyes
If I could only give you my eyes

I enjoy the concept of writing using a feather quill, for the fact that some truth can be found in it. Like the bird who lost its feather, we do not know where it will nest, we only know where it's journey started. Much like our own story.

Oh, Darling Constanze Reeder
As it pains me to say
That the world has been ever changing
From last our childhood days
No more running through fields and
Resting Yond the Willow tree
And to sleep in silence
In those moments carefree

Oh Darling Constanze Reeder
Your words remain inside
And if only I were able
No more days spent to hide

Oh Darling Constanze Reeder
Should a thousand nights pass
Should I not see your face
As I have in the past
Or should fate be much kinder
And a friend to my despair
Then a thousand days should I look o'er my shoulder
And find you there

Oh  Darling Constanze Reeder
Your words remain inside
And if only I was able
No more days left to hide

Oh Darling Constanze Reeder
If you look towards the shore
You would see German colors
As I wave to you once more
For I go to some land
As you wait my return
But should I not sail to my Constanze Reeder
Would you leave a candle to burn

Oh Darling Constanze Reeder
Your words remain inside
And if only I was able
No more days left to hide
And the memory of your smile
Has remained in my heart
And from the memory
Of my Darling Constanze Reeder
Should I never part

The Artists Name
Hank Love Jul 2023
The crowd gathered in the room
And the man pulled back the cloth
Behind it was an old painting
And silence filled them all

Not everyone understood the meaning
From the message in the paint
Some said its a man who took a beating
Some said the man would faint

But somewhere in the back
An older woman stood
She made her way to the front
Holding back her tears the best she could

And she said
"I know this man in the picture
And I know message in the frame
This man took the beating
For what I have myself to blame
Some of you can't see it"
As she pointed at the cross
"Behind the man who paid the cost
The artist left His name"

Then she picked up the painting
As her tears fell on the frame
"What kind of man would take my place
And still care to know my name?"

And she said
"I know this man in the picture
And I know message in the frame
This man took the beating
For what I have myself to blame
Some of you can't see it"
As she pointed at the cross
"Behind the man who paid the cost
The artist left His name"

Join the seas-you men so bold,
And sail for days and days untold!
For the water still, will hold thine name.
When you have passed,
Twill speak thy fame.
And the people there will tell the tale
Of that new horizon thou longed to sail.
Sail on straight and true, across the blue,
And journey far to lands so new.

On that day, I felt that fire of fire
For in my heart burned such desire
And Such desire had I not wanted more.

'Twas a vision and captured thought
Another place I dare forgot
And my longing left my soul to wrought!
Their splendid secrets left beyond the door.

A child's shadow lived in the walls
To every book their voice would call
Music filled the air and God forbid they fall
And shall the memory reside forevermore!

And until now I never watched

In the highest hopes of Heaven
Do the radiant angels
Call the name of Helen.
Who's beauty is fair
Much like they which do dwell there.
Who's eyes do resemble
The stars at night that are assembled
To throw such light upon a wanderer far.
How thine beauty is to me,
Upon the waves of that crystal sea
And I do not by any means
Speak such truth for just pleasantries.
But the words embedded in my heart
Have kept their stay by your own part.
Though how the moon holds my envy
For upon that brim are you perched,
Praised by many.
And though I'm certain I hold your pity,
You remain to hold my heart.

Still Alive

What it doesn't further hurt
Doesn't mean it stops the pain
I carry an umbrella out
Doesn't mean it'll shield the rain

I talk to those who go before me
Doesn't mean they come back
A serpent lies in sleeping
Doesn't mean it won't attack

I Turn my back
And there's a knife through me
I turn my eyes away
But still I somehow see

Close the door and throw the blinds
I won't let you in this time
I won't let you drag me down this time
There's something more deep inside
You break my heart but I'm still alive
I'm still alive

I talk to shadows on my wall
It keeps the thoughts out of my head
Sleeping with the light on
Too afraid of the monster under my bed

But the walls are closing in again
And I feel like im a slave
Drowning in my own sin
But the ship still remains

I turn away
And I leave the ashes behind
I throw another picture away
Burning the past goodbye

Close the door and throw the blinds
I won't let you in this time
I won't let you drag me down this time
There's something more deep inside
You break my heart but I'm still alive
I'm still alive

In The Crossroads
Hank Love Aug 2022
Four roads meet,
The map tells the car to turn right,
But the car across from them must turn left.
I am not in either of the vehicles.
I'm not sure how I've gotten here either.
Nor am I sure which road to take.
The map in my hand has grown worn
And makes it to where I cannot see.
My heart is the angel on my left shoulder
And my mind is the devil upon my right.
The heart, though silent, speaks to me
In a way that only I can understand.
But I can hardly hear that voice,
When the mind screams
At me in great volumes.
The passengers inside the vehicles
Pose as distraction, as each of them
Tells me a different direction.
One path is barren,
Filled with pain and sacrifice
While the other is paved in silver lining.
And the third is marked with the footsteps
From my past.
And I stand separating each of them.
Should I take the easy path,
I must ask myself if it will always be
The straight and narrow
The whole way through.
And should I take the barren path,
I fear that it will be constant.
So today I stand in the crossroads.
Tomorrow I may take one path,
And the next perhaps I will take the other.
But today, I pray that I at least take one step.

Where have you gone?
Was it something they've said?
You've said "So long"
While there's still lines to be read

I miss your creative words
And the emotion that flows in you
They remind me of swords
Able to stab right through

You are a dreamer
A creator all your own
You are a father to your people
In times when you feel alone
And in our human right
A pool of blue flows through our veins
But if you were to bleed
Your blood would appear as ink

Have you put aside the pen
And pushed that dream away?
There's so much to write
About everything that happened today

You may be in a wrong place
Where nothing comes to mind
But there's another world for you
To just leave this one behind

You are a dreamer
A creator all your own
You are a father to your people
In times when you feel alone
And in our human right
A pool of blue flows through our veins
But if you were to bleed
Your blood would appear as ink

She's pure, hot and cold
Her hair looks like gold
Her touch feels like velvet strands

But I still can't believe that I could ever have her
How could I be the one who ever gets to hold her

While she spins in the sky
All around me where I can't reach
And she flies but never touches land
She's out of my hands
And She's out of my league
Cause she spins in the sky
All around me

The way she walks
She's on the clouds
And I ask her to come down
And rescue me

But im just another guy on the ground
And I could never be with her now

While she spins in the sky
All around me where I can't reach
And she flies but never touches land
She's out of my hands
And She's out of my league

Is This Love
Hank Love Aug 2022
With A thousand thoughts
She lies awake in bed
While I'm asleep having nightmares again
Is this love, oh is this love?

In distance we're only
Two inches apart
A thousand miles away
In both of our hearts
Is this love, oh is this love?

Is it the house that's a mess
Or something more
Is there something in the way
Between her and the door

Is this what they call love?
Is this what I've always been told?
Not everything is what it seems
And not all that glitters is gold
Is this what they call love?
Or has someone burned the page
No happy ending from what I can see
No more butterflies only rage
Is this love

Tell me Is this love?

I wonder what she would think
If I told her that I was on the brink
Of walking away
But I couldn't go back the way I came
Is this love, oh is this love

I wonder what she would say
If I told her that I feel the same way
But id tell her that I'm tired of pacing the floor
The flames still burning but it don't hurt anymore
Is this love, oh is this love

Is it the past
That's creeping up again?
I'm knocking at her door
But she won't let me in

Is this what they call love?
Is this what I've always been told?
Not everything is what it seems
And not all that glitters is gold
Is this what they call love?
Or has someone burned the page
No happy ending from what I can see
No more butterflies only rage

Two separate trains departed
As the same did two friends.
Each going the wrong direction
And the tracks, God knew where would end.
I am not in the slightest ashamed to say
That I was not on a train that day.
Instead that day, I remember well,
With bags in hand, I bid farewell.
I was not amused, no I was not impressed,
The journey beyond that thickened smoke.
I must confess, that what I found best,
Was the road, though longer
Was no kinder stranger
For this drifting bloke.
So I said Goodbye, with no tear to eye
As I went about my way.
Towards my destination there,
Though I can't say where,
Perhaps tomorrow I'll find it some day.

Life in a Nutshell

We're blindfolded on a roller coaster.
We are unaware of where or when
The highs will come nor the lows.
However, we are aware
That they will come eventually.
Of course, on a roller coaster,
There's always the sense of excitement.
Which leads me to believe that
The reason we love what
We fear the most?
Is simply because it shows us
That we're all still alive.

Another thought inside my head
Still remains a memory
Another step I take down this road ahead
To me still seems a mystery

My feet are worn I can't go on
My heart it beats just like the drum
The place ahead seems so far
But its better than the place from where I've come

Godspeed down the road that I must travel
Godspeed in the mountains I must climb
Godspeed through my body in the battle
Godspeed my way to my home into the sky

My body's weak and I feel wounded
Searching for someone to save the day
I've lost all hope I'm stranded in the darkness
Waiting for someone to light my way

Godspeed down the road that I must travel
Godspeed in the mountains I must climb
Godspeed through my body in the battle
Godspeed my way to my home into the sky

A friend is like an anchor
That keeps you standing strong
And a memory is just the cargo
That keeps it moving on

Sailing on to new horizons
To the moments that we share
Leaving the past in the distance
To what awaits us there

So i won't worry about the waves
They will come and they will pass
Like a stranger you forgave
Falling like sand into a glass
And I will never see the future
If I focus on the past
So I won't worry about the waves
They will come and they will pass

Many times we dream about tomorrow
And never focus on today
People come into our lives
And we let them slip away

So hold your friends close at heart
And welcome new ones in
For we fail if we're apart
But together we will win

So i won't worry about the waves
They will come and they will pass
Like a stranger you forgave
Falling like sand into a glass
And I will never see the future
If I focus on the past
So I won't worry about the waves
They will come and they will pass

No matter what I do
I'm always in the wrong
Your disappointment in me
Made me write this song

I'll tell you it's black
You'll tell me it's white
If it feels wrong to you
To me it feels alright

Patience is a virtue
That you couldn't afford
It's so much easier
If you slam the door

So put me in these chains
Throw away the key
Serving this sentence like the convict
That you see in me
You've got the wrong man
Tell me what is the crime
I've got to get out alive

You close your eyes
And make me out to be a thief
I run around in circles for you
But I still can't get relief

And no matter how hard I try
It's never enough
Is this a losing game
Am I not worthy of your love

Ignorance is bliss
But I'm not a happy man
All these questions through my head
Is this all part of a plan

So put me in these chains
Throw away the key
Serving this sentence like the convict
That you see in me
You've got the wrong man
Tell me what is the crime
I've got to get out alive

I'd like to tell a story
Of a place that I once knew
That lived a loving family
As far as anybody knew.

They never touched a drink
And they hardly ever swore
Until Pa would come to think
There's gotta be something more

More to life,
More to this
More than the woman
Who gave birth to his kids

Well one night just after supper
Little Timmy wiped his hands
Off on his trousers
And that was where it would end.

Pa took a deep breath I remember well
And told those six people
Around that table
That they could all go to hell

Well you would think that it'd be over
That he had said all there was to say
He was nearly to the door
When little Jimmy started to pray.

"Lord give my mother patience
So she don't get too mad
And forgive my fathers behavior
Along with the six or seven drinks he's had.

Protect my sisters
And me and my brothers too
Cause Lord there ain't no telling
Just what he's about to do."

Now Ma told those little children
"Wash up and go upstairs."
Not one of them moved an inch
And Pa went to grab a switch
Wouldn't you know a car
Would show up there.

It was old pastor James
Who happened to
Be driving through that day.
"I wanted to stop by to tell you all
That we missed you in service today."

Now Pa was just about to speak
When a little voice came soft and sweet.
It was little Susie
Who grabbed the preachers arm
He stooped down to Susie's level
And aided to her charm.

"Pastor James, I have a question
And I know I don't understand,
But how do you get to Heaven
To that far away distant land?
If you have a map
Could you show me and my siblings near?
Cause I know it would be much better
Than another day living here.

How do you get to Heaven
On that bright and Godly shore
How do you walk on streets of Gold
Instead of this old rotten floor?

How do you get to Heaven
Pastor could you tell me please
We've had a life of hardship
And now it's time for a life of ease.

Lest all of them should fall.
What to do if the sun should rise
What then would become of they?
Shall each ashen spirit meet their demise
And should send my friends away?

Such a vision so concerning,
This reflection in the glass
Such a question my curiosity yearning
Perhaps a man from hours past?
What to do if the glass should break
What then would become of he?
Such a thought for my own sake
Would he be slain or rather be set free?

Across The World
Hank Love Apr 2022
Mother earth is dying
This much we know is true
She needs someone to make a change
Maybe me and you

There are fires spreading
And it's time we choose a side
For us to figure out
Do we feed it or do we fight?

Look at the headlines
They may be just another face
But they're one of us
They're part of the human race

Put down the signs
Build up the bridges
Show us how we're alike
And stop pointing out the differences
There's another chance
It doesn't sound so absurd
When we stand hand in hand
Across the world

Give them a call
So they know someone will hear
And show them all that they're not alone
We are only human
We all make our mistakes
And we all have our sins to atone

Put down the signs
Build up the bridges
Show us how we're alike
And stop pointing out the differences
There's another chance
It doesn't sound so absurd
When we stand hand in hand
Across the world

When hardship falls
And you don't have a leg to stand
But if you look beside
We'll be there to hold your hand
Well I hope and pray
That one day we will learn
That to be free it's something
We all have to earn

Put down the signs
Build up the bridges
Show us how we're alike
And stop pointing out the differences
There's another chance
It doesn't sound so absurd
When we stand hand in hand
Across the world

Put down the signs
Build up the bridges
Show us how we're alike
And stop pointing out the differences

The Life After Me
Hank Love Mar 2022
Today, I covered the mirror.
My day no longer starts
With the same face that I used to see.
Today, I put away the scale
That, every time I would step upon it,
Would mock and laugh at me.
Today, I put my phone away
To hold a door for a man I did not know.
Today, I pay attention to the words I say.
So I don't have to reap what I sow.
Today, I did not spend several minutes
Trying to brush my hair.
I used to worry about what people say
But today I really just don't care.
Today, I only wore one set of clothes.
I did not change throughout the day
Instead I was content with what I chose.
Today, I took a breath and I let it go.
The pain, regrets, the burdens,
That I thought I would always know.
Yesterday is over,
And today I can't wait to see.
How tomorrow  will be different
From the life after me.

Well I see him on the TV
He acts like a prophet
With the Bible in his hands
But he sounds too Hollywood
And I don't understand a word he says
He says the Good book says
To love thy neighbor
And I almost believed his lie
But the hurricanes are coming
And he won't let us in tonight

We all need someone to make a difference
We all need someone to shed some light
We all need someone to listen
And teach us all what's wrong from right
We all need someone to make a difference

Well he's been homeless
For ten long years
Carrying his cot through the crowd
He's got a son he doesn't know he has
And he's making someone upstairs proud
People usually go from rags to riches
But this time it's the other way around
He's waiting for the clouds to open
But the rain keeps coming down

We all need someone to make a difference
We all need someone to shed some light
We all need someone to listen
And teach us all what's wrong from right
We all need someone to make a difference

Well she's standing on the corner
For the fifth or sixth time today
She don't have much other choice
Cause she's still got bills to pay
The state came and took her son
It's been three years ago today
She says her knees always hurt her badly
But she still makes time to pray

We all need someone to make a difference
We all need someone to shed some light
We all need someone to listen
And teach us all what's wrong from right
We all need someone to make a difference

No title, just a verse I wrote inspired by Jack The Ripper

Eight poor women
With not a chance in life
Are in good company
With a man and his knife
Seven poor women
With no idea of fun
See a shiny blade
And now it's time to run
Six poor women
Who are so sure hes through
Meets the same fate and stranger
With nothing else to do.
Five poor women
Who try to run and hide
Board their doors
But its he who turns out the light.
Four poor women
Who beg the police to take
Their scream is short and dare I say
The last little sound they make
Three little women
Who try and stick together
He picks them off one by one
And writes another letter.
Two little women
Who will no longer try and fight
No will , no run,  and thats no fun
For Jack always loves a fright.

You ask if this is over
And I'm not sure what to say
I know we can't go much further
And I know we've had to pay

But who am I to tell you
What will be or won't
I can't see the future
And I'll tell you that I don't

But sometimes I can swear
That there's still something there
Trapped behind the words we say
I know the pains too much to bear
And it seems it gets no where
But I'll give you an answer
If we make it through today

Though all the fights and anger
Can't lift my spirits high
And through all the danger
We both still close our eyes

I'm not some kind of soldier
To come and save the day
And we both get only older
As our hair is turning gray

But sometimes I can swear
That there's still something there
Trapped behind the words we say
I know the pains too much to bear
And it seems it gets no where
I'll give you an answer
If we make it through today

Some times I'd like to go back
To when we still believed
That our love would make us stronger
And not drive us to our knees

But sometimes I can swear
That there's still something there
Trapped behind the words we say
I know the pains too much to bear
And it seems it gets no where
I'll give you an answer
If we make it through today

A Pillar in the Sun
Hank Love Feb 2022
When I gazed upon the sunset there
Above the ashen, crystal air
It stood as a statue, great in size
A kindred giant in a dying light.
Never have I seen
And never again I fear.
A Pillar there what looked as gold
Which balanced the Heaven's
In its beaming hold.
And I thought for a moment
Should that pillar fall
The sky would crumble
And crush us all.
But a pillar in the sun, I should say
Shall keep us warm on a freezing day.

A king is a king
With a very heavy crown.
And that king is a king
Until his crown falls down.
And when that crown
Falls to the ground,
The king is not a king
But instead he is the clown.

Poetry Fashions a Name
Hank Love Jan 2022
Poetry lies in the fields of Brazil
Within my heart yet to reveal.
It is beauty that one can smell,
A sweet aroma that surrounds Her well.

And Her eyes, tho I have not seen,
Perhaps in them the sky holds its blue,
Or perhaps She has stolen
The emeralds green.

Poetry is beauty for one to touch,
Her velvet skin, Her heart to clutch.
And while I knew Her, for some short time
In another world, Her heart was mine.

And Her beauty, I've seen only in dreams,
I still can keep her image well.
And Her name, the seraphs they sing
And call Her by the name of Gabriella.

I hear the voices fading from my ears
Their faces are blurred images
Slowly escaping from my mind.
And try as I may to reconstruct
The memory of those I've loved before
I'm aided by a cruel reminder of regret.
Perhaps those we encounter in our lives,
Some times they are our friends first,
Later on becoming strangers.
And at times perhaps time itself
Moves in reverse, only forcing us to see
Our own faults and the reason for them.
However, if time would only move forward
Perhaps yesterday we could have learned
What tomorrow's mistake will be.
What if we could keep the memory
Of those we've lost alive
By simply telling them good bye?

You won't always be someone's favorite. Some people prefer wine while others prefer something a little bit more strong like whiskey.

I find myself in awe of antiques, simply because I am antique. I'm quite  fragile, I'm a bit warn, perhaps even a bit dusty, however with every antique lies an interesting story behind it.

What separates one from the thing
Which sets them free?

Not realizing they have the key.

Art is reckless.
Artists splatter paint across their canvas.

Poetry itself is reckless.
We splatter our words across the readers minds.
