Screen Eyes
Shamini Shami Nov 2015
Let’s take a look into those eyes,
Let’s see what they’ve been seeing
Find the refuge they try to find
Scenes they like to indulge in
Second vision fantasies,
Images twisted and torn off from nowhere
Pixels and microseconds of memories from everywhere
Restless, eager and aching.
I wrote this last night after an absence from proper writing for years, and after finishing, I wondered if this was a good poem. I'm not sure. What do you think? What is a good poem?

Warning Signs
Shamini Shami Feb 2016
Don’t ignore the warning signs
They will not flash red
Hold yourself firmly, lest the floor should crumble away below you.
Remember the lessons learned through the hard times
Feel the constriction in your chest,
It’s screaming at you to avoid this,
At the risk of regressing to the dark times

They are all around you, though you do not notice them
They Poke and nudge you, but you send the sensations to the back of the queue
They will only be apparent when it’s all too late.
Don’t ignore these warning sings
They do not blare sirens.

Windy weather
Shamini Shami Jan 2016
And when the fire relents
You will find me
Unveiled by the smoke
Standing unmoved
Un yielding
Un changeable
And the wind will catch my hair
My shirt
My jeans
You will find me unmoved
Un yielding
Un changed.

Get that MSc
Get it before you get married
Have  children and own an expensive TV

Get that Job,
That steady income
Before you pass thirty
And can become no one’s employee

There’s a massive gap in your work history
The work you did doesn’t matter if you can’t verify it
Anyone can lie, and no one will believe.

Well, my unwanted adviser,
I refuse,
If you can’t hire me past the age of thirty,
The fact is more telling of you.

If a paper certificate is that important than my word
Then maybe we shouldn’t be talking anymore

Yes, there is a gap in my work history,
But during my full time tenor with you
There was a gap in my sanity.

I do mean to be rude,
Your advice is flawed and is not relevant to my experiences
So I’ll make my own decisions,
And you can take that condescending tone out of your voice

All bad things
Shamini Shami Jul 2016
All bad things, I learned from you
Throw it in my face when it's my turn around.

Too quick to point the finger,
When it's too late to keep my calm.

You are both the victim,
and the aggressor.

Old Friend
Shamini Shami Feb 2016
I can’t lie to you any more
I have changed
No longer young
And unable to waste
As much time as you and I used to

I suppose I want you to know who I am now,
See how much we have changed since we were small,
We have grown apart
As we should
We are different
What is the point of having the same conversations again and again?

Aren’t you tired of doing the same thing over again?
Seeing the same places
Same faces
Walking the same paths
We walked since we were first together
Maybe the times are changing
I know I’m not the same
I know you’ve been looking away
It’s a shame in a way
That we can’t figure out how to root the things we love
And make them grow
Or maybe it’s time we let these things go.
