GRIEF
the dirty poet Sep 2021
so much joy with mom & dad, grandma & grandpa
my little cats spikey, spooky and pep
but the memories are tinged with grief
my delight has a halo of melancholy
so much love but i miss them all
i grieve at their absence
it’s a heavy thing

i don’t feel that way with michael, jack, al, the duke
it’s light, it’s buoyant, jubilant
they’re gone but they gave me stuff i still enjoy free of charge
i smile when i listen to the band dada which jack turned me onto
i laugh at all his whining, which was his way of processing life
and the duke trying to beat me up over cindy
the bartender throwing us both out
another night when he jumped on stage at cbgb’s
to purloin the mike from jeffrey lee pierce
making showbiz history
then there’s al’s consoling wisdom
when the old trache patient croaked in front of me at midnight
a shocking horror show and i still had rounds to finish
al simply said "this’ll happen again
you’ll be alone at the end of a dark hall and a patient will crump"
which did come to pass (alright, not such a merry memory)
but he framed it in a way that made it possible to cope
and michael, my long-haired james dean socrates
he was so cool he made a *** belly look tough
three years older, orchestrating the coolest moments of my youth
presenting me with smoking, music, ***, girls
taking on the creepy priest who scared the **** out of me
when he told me i’d go to hell for being jewish
michael jumping in for my defense, bold and brilliant
at age 12 getting in the clergyman’s face
"how do you know he’s not going to a jewish heaven?"

no grief for these guys, just a lifetime of laughs and inspiration

People think I'm crazy cuz
I'm hot for old ladies;
****** from a bygone
age ageless in their time
who can remember
speakeasies & running
boards, rayon & swing
& other things I can't begin
to imagine; hell, they can
remember segregation;
Beaus going off to war &
never returning; hitchhiking
& living to tell about it;
wearing torn fishnets
to CBGB's (omfug); snorting
coke, shooting ****** & giving a
hell of a reading only hours
after giving a hell of a *******
& a speech the next day
to a student body who will
become Young Republicans;
Asians & minorities ******* up
to the buck; who gives a ****
about them now, they're the old-
school conservatives who agitated for
gay marriage; now that they've
got it who are they going to
marry---each other of course but
just imagine a world filled
w/ happy gay couples growing
old together & watching reruns
from a time when people
were straight; people think I'm
crazy cuz I'm hot for old ladies;
I don't hang out w/ them
(sometimes, if
they're cool as in vintage hepcat),
I mostly just fantasize
about them in their prime doing
the Charleston
& drinking the world
away out of a bathtub
to forget the great
depression; going blind on *****
in China; going up the Amazon
high on peyote, husband after
husband dying leaving a tidy sum;
Ageism *****; there are good isms
& bad ones;
now if a fifteen-year-old ***** (we
all known the type--we raised them)
offered me her body I'd do the math
& ask for her grandmother's number;
now if a seventy-five year old *****
offered me her bones to jump,
I'd count myself lucky; I mean, really,
how often does something so sublime
& twisted come along w/ chamomile
& finger sandwiches

Yeah, I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge.
The kids are coming up from behind.
I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge to the kids from France and from London.
But I was there.
I was there in 1968.
I was there at the first Can show in Cologne.
I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge to the kids whose footsteps I hear when they get on the decks.
I'm losing my edge to the Internet seekers who can tell me every member of every good group from 1962 to 1978.
I'm losing my edge.
To all the kids in Tokyo and Berlin.
I'm losing my edge to the art-school Brooklynites in little jackets and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered eighties.
But I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge, but I was there.
I was there.
But I was there.
I'm losing my edge.
I'm losing my edge.
I can hear the footsteps every night on the decks.
But I was there.
I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City.
I was working on the ***** sounds with much patience.
I was there when Captain Beefheart started up his first band.
I told him, "Don't do it that way. You'll never make a dime."
I was there.
I was the first guy playing Daft Punk to the rock kids.
I played it at CBGB's.
Everybody thought I was crazy.
We all know.
I was there.
I was there.
I've never been wrong.
I used to work in the record store.
I had everything before anyone.
I was there in the Paradise Garage DJ booth with Larry Levan.
I was there in Jamaica during the great sound clashes.
I woke up naked on the beach in Ibiza in 1988.
But I'm losing my edge to better-looking people with better ideas and more talent.
And they're actually really, really nice.
I'm losing my edge.
I heard you have a compilation of every good song ever done by anybody. Every great song by the Beach Boys. All the underground hits. All the Modern Lovers tracks. I heard you have a vinyl of every Niagra record on German import. I heard that you have a white label of every seminal Detroit techno hit - 1985, '86, '87. I heard that you have a CD compilation of every good '60s cut and another box set from the '70s.
I hear you're buying a synthesizer and an arpeggiator and are throwing your computer out the window because you want to make something real. You want to make a Yaz record.
I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables.
I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars.
I hear everybody that you know is more relevant than everybody that I know.
But have you seen my records? This Heat, Pere Ubu, Outsiders, Nation of Ulysses, Mars, The Trojans, The Black Dice, Todd Terry, the Germs, Section 25, Althea and Donna, ****** Harrassment, a-ha, Pere Ubu, Dorothy Ashby, PIL, the Fania All-Stars, the Bar-Kays, the Human League, the Normal, Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Monks, Niagra,
Joy Division, Lower 48, the Association, Sun Ra,
Scientists, Royal Trux, 10cc,
Eric B. and Rakim, Index, Basic Channel, Soulsonic Force ("just hit me"!), Juan Atkins, David Axelrod, Electric Prunes, Gil! Scott! Heron!, the Slits, Faust, Mantronix, Pharaoh Sanders and the Fire Engines, the Swans, the Soft Cell, the Sonics, the Sonics, the Sonics, the Sonics.

You don't know what you really want

my girl is a cat & I like her like that
she goes meow & scratches my face;
she eats her kibble & lies down to go
to sleep in a big pillow in the middle
of the living room floor; she's so psychic
just like any cat but when I slipped a
hit of acid in her water she didn't freak
out at all just lay down like always &
slept soundly; waking up with wide eyes
as if she had dreamed of mice coming
out of every corner which wasn't even far
from the truth as at the time we lived
in a ghetto but soon we packed up &
moved to the suburbs w/ my painfully
bourgeois gf who didn't want to be seen
walking down our old street; didn't
bother me; me & Allie the Cat on a
first name basis w/ the drug dealers &
crack ****** who weren't all that bad
once u got to know them; Allie sitting
peacefully in the window watching the
nightly drive-by, sometimes I would
entertain a neighbor or two & drink too
much & start regaling them w/ stories
of the Bowery & how I got kicked
out of CBGB's umpteen times; we all
laughed, smoked crack & drank Bud Ice
& they'd tell me how their parents used
to shoot up in front of them; I must have
heard that story a thousand times;
Allie is a lot older now; she still sits in
the window but looking out on squirrels
collecting acorns & kids on their bikes
is nothing compared to random stabbings
& shakedowns by undercover cops; I
think she misses our colorful old
neighbors; I know I do but I don't miss
the gunfire at four in the morning
& the rats that were twice Allie's size
