Forgive me for I play possum,
Interrupt at their business is not my interest,
In my mind that was instilled,
By parents who cares, and terrors at rest.

In riddles full of cues I acted dumb,
Oh boy, I tell you I'm not numb,
These ears need affirmations,
From your mouth, not just suspicions.

Forgive me for I play possum,
Upset and annoy you are not my intentions,
Sometimes I just find it awesome,
Fleeing from duties and directions!

I'm not treating you as squirt,
I just don't want to pay heed,
That futile and stale creed,
Consumes you though it doesn't need.

I forgive you for thinking,
That possum is still what I'm playing,
But now this puzzle is what I'm digging,
Give me some time in digesting,
For this mind is boggling,
Because that line keeps on playing!

                              The Dachshund and the ‘Possum

I let the dog out for her night patrol
To sniff the boundaries and take a stroll

But out in the dark, beyond the cat
That was where an old ‘possum was at

The dachshund stiffened; she was filled with rage
She charged the enemy; she snarled, “ENGAGE!”

I commanded the dachshund to let it go
With bark and bite and snap her answer was “no”

The fierce dachshund growled; the old ‘possum hissed
I grabbed for the dog but obviously missed

I went back inside to take a shower
Thinking to give the stupid dog an hour

And so it passed; her allotted time is up
The standoff continues ‘tween ‘possum and pup

At dawn it may be that one is dead –
I’ll find out then; for now I’m off to bed!
ANZAC CHUMS AND THEIR MUMS

In Oz the possum grinds on thorn and gum
Far too stretched to visit mum -
Things are hard outback of Bourke
And there’s no time for anything but work.

But Kiwi possums like to visit ma
With flowers for her crystal jar -
They’ll even take a shopping bag of buds
With some greens and beans and spuds.

In Oz the possum is protected
As indeed might be expected -
Beset by fires and drought and prickles
And parched out creeks that slim to trickles.

But Kiwi possums are heaven sent
To slurp and scoff to heart’s content -
When they dine they have the best
And not surprisingly are deemed a pest.

In Oz a treasure - in NZ an imported glitch
There are mixed opinions either side the Ditch –
Mum’s the word on making possums able
To visit home with veggies for the table.
