THE SHIPPING FORECAST...

An aural nautical weather map of an imaginary cut-up sea where the naming enters our nation’s consciousness....becomes part of the British psyche through its radio recitation... a litany... a rosary...mantra... a prayer of various here and theres that can only be imagined.

An oral/aural concrete poetry whose art belongs to Dada... an incantation of sounds and places only imagined...well known unique distinctive soundings and their hypnotic reassuringly ritualistic resonant repetition which is held in the greatest affection...mesmerically obscure...soothingly safe...strangely comforting...a litany of waves coming across the airwaves like a lullaby or a wartime coded message or Cocteau’s Orphée trying to decode death on the radio.

As iconic as the tube map with its elegant geometry of twisted coloured lines...it has become part of our mental landscape that our senses seek out as being quintessentially British.

It scans...it’s got rhythm...who could ask for anything more.

Something rich...and strange.

*******

Especially in its bedtime for Britain broadcast with us all drifting off to the strains of Ronald Binge’s SAILING BY(also the writer of ELIZABETHEAN SERENADE) as we sip our coca...lock the back door...put the milk bottles out and try to persuade the cat to come in as the day is put to bed and finally laid to rest at precisely 00: 48

wine about me god with dark hair below me moving

i feel incredulous when i look at myself with borrowed eyes

and the room smattering a night paint thorough

immutable triumph you undress like perfect coat

that palm of your mind shakes hands with mine

and obsfucates the sea, sea fog heaves its bright weight

bright alone like god piano the sun piano in church

galician heat and night erode my throat and what it has to

plea for watching the summer die and you begin your

return to israel

the boats are left where no boat belongs, already that sea-line

stone cools and hardens real magic into the apses

later let lay in ruby sheets for however long lacking your wet

dark way like a prayer but the mouth is sealed in a perfect

tomb

Acaso a ti mi ausencia te acompaña.
A mí me duele tu recuerdo, diosa.

La guerra dio al amor el tajo fuerte.
Y es la total angustia de la muerte,
con la sombra infecunda de tu llama

y la soñada miel de amor tardío,
y la flor imposible de la rama
que ha sentido del hacha el corte frío.

Just because there is a window
in an envelope, does not mean
it is bad news.

If it was accompanied with lace
curtains or shutters, then one
might become suspicious.

My friend lives on a Lighthouse,
in Finisterre, the first female
keeper in France.

Madame Lumiere, she is known
as locally and to the ships in the
night.

Her abode is like a snow dome,
full visibility, twenty four seven.
So, all her letters have portholes.

Next time you ponder mail, with
a glazed look, reflect before you
open it and think about Samantha.

The Spanish Sea Gulls
have just turned back,

Handed over to French
Birdeaux's, until Brittany.

Due to Brexit, we will
not have any from UK,

But the Irish ones are
flocking by Finisterre!
An hour out of Santander
en route to Cork via La France
UK Cornwall where there was
a grain fed aviary until Brexit.

Dear Amy G
2nd Nov 2024

Have you had any success

with your insomnia.

I hear there is a Bach remedy

others swear by acupuncture

even yoga.

How does you partner cope,

some say it is like sleeping

with a schizophrenic.

I was told that a dark room

with the sound of water

is a tremendous help.

Yours Truly

Vivify Cognizant.
