A MOTHER'S LOVE
Robert Thornton Aug 2012
Her smile was like a thousand stars
that shone before my eyes.

Her touch was like the gentle breeze
of floating butterflies.

Her voice was like the sweetest note
of every love song told.

Her heart was like the glowing warmth
of melted liquid gold.

Her soul was like the strongest rock
on which I so depend.

The only person on this earth
who'll love me till the end.

A Summers Morn
Robert Thornton Jan 2012
A Summers Morn    (Robert Thornton)   2012

On clear and bright sweet summer's morn
all hint of darkness past.
where glistening spray of dew drops form
resplendently on grass.

And scented rush of flower in bloom
awakened by sunlight,
steers heart and soul away from gloom
and fills them with delight.

Where wondrous song of birds in trees
like church bells ring out loud,
and sun-drenched pasture once in seed
boast stems so tall and proud.

And shimmering haze of golden rays
cascade twixt every branch,
who's sleepy leaves, on gentle breeze
partake in fleeting dance.

Grey squirrels dash from tree to tree
their bushy tails held high,
and honey bees in troops of three
set sail with dragon fly.

Where trickling sound of nearby stream
breaks silence from the still,
that weaves it's route to stem and shoot
from nature's grand refill.

And winding path that snakes through dale
with stone-wall as its vein,
such well-trod ground that tells its tale
in footprints that remain.

The ageless glory of a summer's day
in all its majesty,
A special miracle in every way
For all eternity.

End.

WISHMAKER
Robert Thornton Oct 2010
Wishmaker, Wishmaker
cast me a spell
nuggets of gold
from your wishing well
blandish my heart
with your finest delights
lift up my soul
to  heavenly heights.

Grey clouds mean nothing
when you are around,
childish- like fantasies
forever abound.
sunshine appearing
wherever you go
bewildering starlight
from where?.. I don't know.

The newest of old things
the oldest of new.
forgotten reminders
come shining through
of days when
life's innocence first began
that wonderful, wonderful
magical man.

BILBERRY GAGE
Robert Thornton Oct 2010
Fairies and fancies
and flippant romances
and all things bright and gay.

Cream cakes and choc flakes
and raspberry mistakes
rise up in  a spiralling fray.

Blue skies and greenflies
and warm-sugared apple pies
and the scent of freshly cut hay.

Strawberries and Ice cream’s
and mouth-watering Nectarines
succumb to the heat of the day.

Golden-crust pastries
and honey –drenched fig leaves
made in the old-fashioned way.

Piping-hot dainties
with oak-coloured bases
that refuse to come out of the tray.

A gaze up above to a snowy white dove
sees the sky go from golden to grey.

From twilight to moonlight,
from moonlight to starlight
the end of a beautiful day.

THE WINDOW
Robert Thornton Oct 2010
Looking through my window
as the world goes floating by
a welcoming distraction
to the view in my mind's- eye

Cascading shafts of sunlight
impinge upon the pane
deflecting painful memories
of my endless pouring rain

Looking through my window
at people passing by
biting down upon my lip
to stop me shouting..why?

A group of happy children
playing down below
innocence and laughter..
..it seems so long ago

Looking through my window
longing to be free
looking through my window
is this my destiny?

A FINAL PRAYER
Robert Thornton Oct 2010
Oh thank you Lord for this last day
with all my heart I hope and pray
that when my body's cold and grey
I'll re-awake beside thee.

When I at last may understand
life's twists and turns that you have planned
created by your loving hand
were only there to guide me.

Into your wonderland of light
where sunny days replace the night
and sound of birdsong sweet and bright
reborn again and so free.

But now this Earthly shadow fades
a growing darkness that pervades
every thought I've ever laid
and eyes that stare but don't see.

So gracious Father in whose name
all life on Earth remains a flame
accept this soul without refrain
thy greatest gift unto me.

Someday
Robert Thornton Mar 2010
Someday, someday far away
when all the pain has passed
beyond the sea, the sun the stars
I'll find you...love...at last

Though raging storm
or cosmic ray
may tear my limbs apart
my love for you they cannot sway
for you possess my heart

Our Earthly lives hold many fears
remorseless in their quest
to break apart the bonding years
for which we've stood the test

Those precious times together
cocooned in love's embrace
a breathless bead upon my brow
that falls upon your face

Remember me my Angel's dream
as soon my life is through
for every sinew of my soul
belongs alone to you.
