are you alive?
Robert Gretczko Oct 2016
blithe and without obvious anchorage time will pass
moments to months to years and thoughts forgotten
reflect, retool your mind in deference and place markers
plainly to remember with smiles or tears
what seemed so important and assertive
now just flitters so lightly more air than substance
touch your fingertips and bow your head
recall and dazzle your memory so sharp
pointed things to come your way to stick
and **** your drifting soul make mention
to your quite inklings rushing past your
golden wash works of sultry limbs and
smokey sinewy lips that breathed an
alchemy of immortality and flame throwing
lust and rolling, twisting turning convoluted
instantaneous bursting silver sparkled raging
everything that shut the door to
vapid tundra of limitless landscapes now
pressed tightly into the eye of a needle

quintessential woman...
Robert Gretczko Oct 2016
her name rung out with a chime
her heart beat in pantomime
her body reeked with surprise
her soul rested deep in her eyes
her hair flowed with silky shine
her squared smile had become mine
her lust was only surpassed by passion
her hips and gait always in fashion
her mind bold and on always fire
her lust for thought my prime desire
her touch a golden tip of grace
her beauty rested quietly in her face
her loyalty thundered at every turn
her devotion never ceased to burn
her way of placing anything at all
her assuredness all did enthral

Old is gold...
Robert Gretczko Oct 2016
when I was young I wondered
how the world came to be
now, much older
I don't think I want to know

I cherished friends
and their ways
to find at times
how far away they had gone

I thought there was
an absolute right
until I witnessed
some serious wrongs

I achieved
mightily goals... particular to me
but soon realized how minuscule
in fact we are

I threw down
real passionate ideas
and picked up
so many flaws

remained optimistic
at the challenges up front
and spent many
lifetimes looking back

tinker around the edges
or plunge right in head first

mind where you are walking
wipe your shoes before entering

say hi to a stranger
let your friends know you care

come down on the side of right
know when you might be wrong

allude to a memory
stick to a measured thought

bring about change
stay steady as she goes...

take time to smell the flowers
know when something really stinks

remind those who have forgotten
take stock of yourself as well

make sure to always be on time
keep cognizant of things of late

stay strong when the going gets tough
smooth out a difference when you can

yield to a cogent argument
be strong to inner truth

stay beguiled to the unknown
state forcefully what you know

Robert Gretczko Oct 2016
admonish and reclaim
find fault in disdain
make yourself opaque and plain
go outside enjoy the rain
keep thinking and go insane

so take a break and get away
no one wants you here to stay
you're not good or even okay
once you were stone, now you're clay
but you'll be back strong another day

it's like you are cursed and cast aside
get smart, take a hint go and hide
all your friends think you've been snide
you double talked and even lied
got to face it now as your world's collide

but you did think you were right
why all the fuss and rancid spite
you told them all to see the light
now you gotta get out of sight?
you've been beaten by all their might

on the other hand
why even bother to take a stand
their heads were always in the sand
not even that exciting, in fact bland
while you were strong and in command

torment and lament... drifting
stark disintegrating and sifting
leave now or stay....
either howl or pray

dust reclaims and hovers
the last pieces of broken lovers
you drew each other's air
now suffocating in lonely despair

unmatched... unmet glory
stilled and blind... a whole new story
he said it... you read... it's wrong
neither, now know where to belong

tattered and empty in disarray
deaf and dumb nothing left to say
last touch last breath... embrace
your final look up close... at her face

what you gathered so carefully with great fuss and bother
drifts away without even a glimpse back or a simple wave...

goodbye...

love ones... lovers... great sounds... tastes... temptations
ways of thinking lusting finding groping sleeping dreaming

there are in this place so many words
of wonder, regret, unbounded faith and hope
resilience and surrender... so much piety
and lust.... forgiveness and grace

they all fall perilously to their fields of purity
and offer the readers eye a ballet of sumptuous
journeying to all places remembered not
yet known... some simply discarded

ever sure we may get tripped up we
scale these walls these monuments of
other worlds and ways of navigation
in plain anticipation of revelation

or confirmation... how did I do that
would I do that, can I say that
how rich and clever or demonically
unnerving or so delicate a palette of

consonants and vowels stringing
along our hearts our minds
our landscapes our escapes
our bodies... our homes our desires

park your dreams steady your
innards zip your pants
tidy your workplace... make ready
your smiles and screams are waiting...

clever is the fortuitous man to surmise
the ever-changing meaning and machinations
of life's tinsel and flagrant floppiness
flipping and bending about immeasurably
to whims and claims and vignettes of
times past and future just guessing
and murmuring assumptions and platitudes
irascible mendacities or sagacity ever plain

Charlotte Street slumber
Robert Gretczko Oct 2016
on gray hard streets we pounded out our youth
amidst tightly knitted cobble stone pathways
and shining windows always kept clean
struggling strong immigrants far and wide
teemed fruitfully through long days
and playful front stoop games
ring a leeveo and johnny on a pony
stick ball, jax and my favorite skellzey
mostly happy but deadly too
many ways of speaking were spoken
cultures clashed but soon subsided
in quiet civility and tamed calm
that all efforts would bring ahead more
bright days and simple luxuries
a streetside chat... a day at Orchard Beach
breezy stroll through Crotona Park...
a picnic by water's edge and maybe a hooked flounder
pale afternoon sun would blaze firey red at sunset
then pink and purple painted effortlessly
across our sleeping skies
we longed just for friendly pushing around
flirting with the girls when the nerve came up
and smart challenges of who could do what
when and how
for then that time, our time it was
all just a dream a day and the glories
of growing up...

Robert Gretczko Oct 2016
can we humans be more like weeds
grow abundantly... with little needs
sprout boldly from the smallest crack
reach skyward always... never looking back
thrive miraculously where well cared friends wither
yet florish side by side with a hint to come hither
stand ruthlessly against mans' herbicides
or chopped to the root and cast aside

our petals and leaves we open wide to all
though not invited ours is... a grand sprawl
with fine frons and feathery wisps
our sturdyness does not engender idle quips
we bend and sway in the mightiest torrent
with roots so deep... some find us abhorrent
but all and all... in all of our landscapes
there is a just place for man, plants and apes

glow to the righteous and firmed in their ways
aloof and fervent forever steadfastly pure
we allow secret ways to uncover us then cover us
over softly so other realms may enchant
we participate open-handed, open-hearted
taking and sharing in delights of pleasure
and in all good measure, we seek the quiet
of love or god or spirits those special ways
to each delivered by cherubs or captains in dress
relentless we search for purpose or oppose
sureness that slurps away at us like melting dew
how can we know or see the ways to
delay or restart matters that can confuse
then reward and disappear as if listening to fallen rain
it's not that we can not see all
but more to it, the mysteries of the unknown
far outstrip anything found, written or even imagined

dainty and fluorescent is the mask of humility
forthwith we proclaim allegiance and sanctity
we need not ask to deeply... it is so
the answer will disarm what we all know

whether high in proximity to those under
all fall victim to charade and blunder
spoken philosophies and capricious sighs
we tuck ourselves tightly to fashion our lies

evermore ever present in common place
covered and covert we try to save face
why not give it, let all go its way
and cleanse ourselves thoroughly without delay

is it more profound a performance endured
when spectators stand around totally immured
grace falls just short of mendacities door
but wrenchingly it gropes for more and more

it is our chance and all in your power
to drench yourself in a righteous shower
whether kindness, good deeds or getting it straight
fact is... that is what most people call great

doused now with trinkets one by one
all that was cherished now blatantly undone

this journey to nowhere was never known
our blindness so complete and never shown

it's curious how things fit together
silky suede and Spanish leather

tea for two and three of a kind
people adept with a common mind

flowers as redolent as crystalline spice
heated passions that turn quickly to ice

alluring speech and total silence
tuning out stories of angst and violence

a fit of anger that trembles your heart
the longing pain when lover's part

men playing cards or pumping weights
well dressed women with alluring gaits

a chef sipping a tasty stew
sitting around waiting for something to do

holding on tight to a winding stair rail
the slowing steps when turning old and frail

a blue clearing sky after a sudden storm
a well-made bed silky and warm

I assume that...

I sent up a fully inflated trial balloon
it drifted patiently past an August moon

though it fell upon deafened ears
the effort did not seem fraught with fears

but causing consternation soon thereafter
to my shock and surprise... I anticipated laughter

one never knows what some may think
you think you know, then it all changes in a wink

living it down...

you can...

castigate, intimidate, illuminate, go on a date, truncate, *******, eliminate, obfuscate, relate, stimulate, instigate, flagilate, tailgate, meditate, ruminate, emulate, forestate, accumulate, fumigate, immasculate, escalate, puncuate... come home late

  or just

sit still, take a pill, look out the window sill, speak in a shrill,
fall tired and ill, pay another pesky bill, fret about another ****,
say again you've had your fill,
or get out your pen now and write  your will!

clean getaway...
Robert Gretczko Sep 2016
with a lilting sigh and sudden twist
the deed was done the stone flung and
ripples moving out from in... in a harmony
I'd sing a tune if I had a voice....
make a move if I had a choice

counting down and standing up
I choose to shout out and dance a bit
engage in conversation somewhat
rumble and tumble... stretch and make do
file away all the thoughts of you

stroll needlessly with no route or place to be
chat with a memory or stand neck bent
see the sky fluttering above
make careful notes and future plans
wash up thoroughly before shaking hands

Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, Pope Paul VI, Ru Paul and
Paula Jones... Beethoven and Presley, Euripides, Little Ricard, Oscar Wilde, Marie Currie and Martha Washington, The Rolling Stones,
Boy George, Helen of Troy and Clarke Gable, T. S. Elliot and
Eliot Gould, Melville, Shubert and Marilyn Monroe....

If all this humanity were but grains of sand
all who have came and all who will come
would neatly fit in a hundred gallon drum

a pittance of the vastness and dark realms
the stars that light, the bit we can see
of the unimagined depth of our the galaxies

a twig in the veld, a bubble in the burst
for we are but a dot in time and blink of rays
a mere spark that ignites the eternal blaze

organize, politicize, economize, engage and rage
we think, we plan, take turns at splendor
when stars fade and breath falters... we quietly surrender

moving on....
Robert Gretczko Sep 2016
i left behind an unsigned letter
knowing the reader will know who it was from
i packed a bag with useless memories
and stuffed it away with a carefree hum

strolled down a path that tripped up my pace
secretly knowing and avoiding
an upcoming disgrace

i parted ways with a mindful friend
easily and firmly
assured it was a final and fitting end

my mind fell numb at her tender touch
not knowing why or where it came from
but found out i needed her so very much
