Dear Kailee,

First, thank you for thinking of me.

I must tell you that at Andover, which I attended, the English part of every final I took always had a poem I had never seen before. Above it was the sentence, "Explicate and expatiate the poem below." I came to hate that sentence, because, in a larger sense, as I started writing poetry in my early twenties and continue to do so, I feel the real worth of any poem is not academic or intellectual, but intuitive and evocative, even spiritually transcendent. Yes, it is helpful to study syntax and diction, even the meaning of new words, but helpful only in the sense that these studies allow you to express poetically and precisely what you know to be your truth.

When you are writing a poem--and, for that matter, always--be yourself. It's your poem. It's your truth. It's your life. If you are always true to yourself, you can never be (to paraphrase Polonius's
wisdom that he shares with his son, Laertes,  in "Hamlet") false to anyone.

Don't "write" your poem, feel it.

The BEST remedy for pain is to write it out!  Work on your poetry...work on a story...work on ANYTHING but the pain...just write it out...even if you have to write about your pain...just write...you'll wake up one day and...it will be gone...because YOU are in charge...not...IT!!!  GOOD LUCK AND KEEP WRITING.
