I like that it is nature oriented "the whale"
And not overtly centered on the men he watches. Man is incidental in a haiku. In studying nature we develope a relationship with the Earth. In this sense, a traditional haiku - which may have 5-7-5 sylliboled lines and hundreds of stanzas by many poets - is a philisophical martial art.
