Good trappers worked off their own instincts,
could collect nice pelts all day long,
bringing decent wages.
But it was the great hunters who studied the habits of their quarry,
learned how to trap the finest furs,
and once they got one,
would be done for the rest of the season,
for the bounty on such a prize catch,
would last long into the winter,
sometimes longer.
And quite often, they retired.
