Climbing slowly up the staircase
softly crossing to the door
pushing gently,
gently knocking
empty bottles to the floor,
empty glass upon the bed
empty promise on the sheets
listen,
hope for steady breathing
then, and only then
I sleep.
Caring for someone with a bad habit can become something of a habit in itself.
