"on the narrow porch they sit, and wait, and sit
in wheel chairs, behind walkers, too many
like goldfish who crowd the surface
for flecks of food..."

their forgetful minds
but remembering hearts
you wonder if she knows
it's you
her mind doesn't make the connection
but her heart feels the love
like a mother and her son
not knowing how to speak
but loving without question

the dementia taking over
her mind once brilliant
now the light dimming
it's hard and she tries to remember
not wanting to let go
like a solider in battle
she does't want to loose this fight

you see her for the last time
replaying the memories
like your favorite song
over and over again
