I went for a run today
- straight, right, around and about -
only to end up in the exact place
we first (almost) kissed
with our hands held and
a heart drawn in the dirt,
you reached out for my lips and
staggered along with my breath.
But today, you no longer sat beside me
and my hands only grabbed at
the limestone underneath my palms;
winter washed away the shape
meant to be engraved forever and
I reached out a little farther
only to find a puddle to replace your space.
Surprisingly however,
my breath no longer staggered with the wind,
and I walked away with a smile
knowing whatever happened there
still lies deeper than dirt.
