The Instrument
By Joseph Childress
I'm composing
A symphony with this typewriter
Honestly,
I'm not writing musical notes
For the sake
Of typing on pianos
This is music itself
Listen.
This is what soul sounds like
To me
Of course,
The raw strokes of pencils
Are classic
But this new age music
Is of my time
I've learned
How to play this instrument
To showcase
My ability as a musician
And these notes
Are loudest
When read alone
