On the edge of a wood stood a well
Between Walker’s stead and the dell
Ha’way man young Alan
Aright mortal off balance
Down into the well he full fell
Ha'way is a typical expression from the north east of England, particularly prominent in the Geordie accent
This poem is dedicated to a man called Alan, whose favourite pub was the Highwayman.
