The edge of childhood

The edge of childhood, please take my hand, please don’t let go.

Life is fleeting, and I am losing my grip

Voices in my head and tears that drip.

Gnawing pain that won't subside

Ghosts of memories that never died

The manic child has nowhere to live

The heart sinks with every open door

Oh dear, how can I leave her behind?

Her house is on fire, and she cannot be saved

But how can I leave her behind?

frightened, fragile, frail

She says she is fine with blood in her mouth

She says she is brave with scars on her hand

Where can she put so much pain that has nowhere to go?

Leaving her behind and walking to the door

How can I ever let go of her?

How can I ever let go of the childhood that shaped every inch of myself?

My heart is decaying, a sickness I cannot name

There's so much comfort in sorrow, in the realm of childhood ache.

I cannot walk without her; my legs are weak.

I run back to the door, wailing her name.

Please take my hand and embrace me.

The edge of childhood, please take my hand, please don’t let go
