If Only

If only we could switch lives

for a day

so you could be happy.

If only I could bear your pain

for a day

so you could be free.

If only the burdens you carry

could be taken away for

a moment.

If only the fears you hide

could be burned away by

the sunrise.

If only you wouldn't cut yourself.

If only you wouldn't cry.

If only you wouldn't think of suicide.

If only. . . .

Every day

without fail

I see another post on Pinterest

about cutting.

And my heart breaks a little each time.

I grew up in a small town.

All of my family was close by.

Life has always been good.

Not easy.

But good.

And now I'm learning about girls who are struggling.

They are hurting

and I can't do a thing

to help.

They beg younger siblings

not to end up like them.

They sink every day

into depression.

They sit alone in bathrooms

spilling their own blood.

Here I sit

in my room,

wishing I could help them somehow.

Because my heart is still breaking.

Someday it might shatter.

If only I wasn't helpless.

If only I could put my feelings into words.

If only.

If only.

i'm sorry i couldn't help more

Also: I'm realizing that this is more dramatic than I intended, and I don't mean for it to come across as guilty. Just thought I'd put that out there.
