The Reason For Darkness

The reason that there is darkness in the world is so that we can appreciate the presence of light in our lives. Similarly, in death, we appreciate and place such a high value on life. Many people view death as the end. We are sad, and rightly so, but it is unhealthy to remain and dwell or be preoccupied by the loss. We should also be rejoicing and remembering the many moments and experiences that were shared during life. As Christians, we believe that death is not our final destination. We believe that death is the end of the beginning (of our life on earth) and it is the beginning of a new and perfect eternal life in heaven: sharing in the perfect expression of love of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in perfect communion. Blessed and soon to be St. John Paul II and many others having miracles attributed to their names years after death is surely proof of something after death. The four seasons are also necessary. Winter is cold, barren, dark, and things die. But as sure as we know that the sun will rise each morning, when hope seems all but lost and darkness seems to have a death hold, Spring comes to melt the snow and warm the earth bringing life, light, and warmth to the entire world. We appreciate the Spring more because of the Winter. We appreciate the warmth of Summer and the cold of Winter because of the other. If there was no darkness, we would not appreciate the light as much and would have no need for a source of light. If the world was perfect; with no pain, or suffering, or hurt, no death, nor sickness, nor tears, we would have no need for the light that Christ is. We would not need Him for anything. God would serve no purpose: God would effectively be dead.

Lord, there is so much pain, suffering and darkness in the world today. Where is the hope? Where is the light? Show us that you love us and that you still care about your children. Help us Lord to be a light to the world and let your light and your love burn within us. Thank you for giving us your son as a light for the whole human race and help us to make this world a little better, a little happier and a little brighter. May we appreciate the lights in the world because of the darkness. Be with us always and let us always do for one person what we want to do for every person. Just to know that because of one thing that you have done in us that one person is able to breath and live and sleep easier, that is success. Lord, please do not give up on us and I pray that we might never give up on you! AMEN!
