It is the silence in the darkness
of midnight that haunts me most.
Not the muffled sound of the TV
a room over, being watched by
someone whose life I shall never
know. Not the birdsong outside of
my window at dawn, mourning the
end of another night. But the
silence of midnight, when I am
left with no company but the
tortuous howling of my own mind.
