I wrote a poem. It was the kind of poem that rhymes and has a certain rhythm to the words and phrases. After several revisions, and through the process of reading the poem aloud to myself, I thought: “This could be a song.” So I added music to the poem. Then I felt it needed more of a “hook,” so I wrote a chorus that would be repeated a couple of times. After several hours work, voilà: I had written a song. And it wasn’t half bad, I must say, at least by my modest standards.
