WILL VERSE GIVE US LIFE?
What can we expect from this short life,
which is like a dream whose sense is vague?
We scarcely lie down when we wake up
quite amazed at what all that has been.

I've been serious and have used my time
among piles of books that gives me lots.
Most talented was my genius friend,
Father Denis, who taught me best verse.

He endowed me all what man would need
and did not depart till he got sure
that l would be as good as he wished
in a world where success is too hard.

I've continued in my serious way,
spending lots of time among my books.
I have written lots of verse and hope
it will give my teacher and me life.
