Surrounded by walls
No way in or out
Stuck inside
On my own
No one to talk to
No one to love
Engulfed in darkness
I wait
In despair

Then there’s a noise
A knock on the wall
Followed by another
Then another
One by one
Brick by brick
I tear the wall down

Light streams in
And I see them
I hesitate
The darkness kept me safe
The light foreign to me
They reach out
No other reassurance needed
I step out
Into the light
