I listened to their horrible screams
As the teeth gnawed at their flesh
I couldn't see the predator's hand
But the smell of death was fresh

I wanted to run as I heard them cry
But my roots were buried too deep
It sounded like thunder as each one fell
But all I could do was weep

Each day they chased the shade away
The shadows had no where to hide
The knots in my stomach began to grow
My leaves grew brittle and dried

Then one day the screams drew silent
But nothing was ever the same
I waited for death to claim his reward
But somehow it never came

I looked through the leaves that covered my eyes
The only one left was me
There's no one to talk to, I'm all alone
I was the very last tree
