Igor met the new girl in the village; he wanted his grandfather to know he had fallen in love; his relative didn't approve as there was no way of knowing whether the girl was a travelling spirit only disguised as a girl from the cold northern wood; Igor thought his grandfather must be mistaken & determined to make her his bride in red & they went off into the woods where Igor was gaily welcomed by the strange people where all the women were in red & all the men in blue; Igor's grandfather growing old & alone lost his sight & then his hearing & soon couldn't move at all & he had a dream of Igor gamboling through the forest glades happy as a satyr for the first in his life in a frozen still-life tableaux of bliss, peace, tranquility, serenity & calm & Igor's grandfather shed a tear b/c he would love to go there but he was too angry, too sad, too vain & too ignorant; in other words his feelings & emotions were a hard shell that he could never escape; meanwhile Igor felt nothing numb w/ love in his vision his grandfather somehow burst the shell but in reality no such thing happened & Igor went on happily living w/ his bride who was everything his grandfather said she would be; a spirit in disguise but w/o the mask of the girl the spirit was even more beautiful; his grandfather couldn't have known, wouldn't understand or comprehend the world outside his shell of emotions
