I can hear
Them screaming-
Deathly, blood-gargling
Screams.
As a boy,
I wanted to jump in
And save them.
I saw others try,
But like drowning victims,
Their instinct to escape
Puts both parties
in danger.
Now, in my age,
After watching too many
Failed attempts,
I get the feeling
They don't want to be saved;
They simply
don't want
To drown
Alone.
