a lesson

my father once told me

to be a leader

not a follower

what does that even mean

to a seven year old boy

with pizza stains on his shirt

and scabs on his knees

i thought nothing of it at the time

how could i have

so here i am

still thinking nothing of it

getting drunk

not following

anyone

and not leading

anyone either
