the best thing
about being dead…
hope does not elude you
because it can no longer delude you

the best thing,
about being dead…
you no longer dread
the future
success or failure,
shame,
blame
or fame

when your spirit wanders
it might somehow “know”
that
few recall your visage
few speak your name
few blaspheme
few mourn

but, mostly you are gone
not living on
in the rivers of their hearts
or the thumping of their drums
---they beat only for those who still dance

perhaps…
the best thing about being dead
is you no longer have to worry
about being dead
