When we look in the mirror at the beginning of the day, we are looking at the unvarnished version of ourselves. At this moment we are forced to reckon with our truest existence. From this moment on, we are creating a facade to fool ourselves and others. If we were to admit the truth even to ourselves, then we would be forced to live with our imperfections. While many of us know what they are, we do not want to face them. In the end, they are the parts we want to keep hidden. To address them would make us feel that we are losing a part of ourselves and are taking away from time we could be doing something else. So in this, we lie to ourselves so that we cannot be forced to live with what we really are.
