It's hot in the city
And never settles down
Look past the dark and the gritty and see beauty all around
I've made a mistake
Says a close friend of mine
"When hearts begin to break, just give it a little time."

I wrote you a letter
In a broken whiskey bar
It said "I hope you're better, wherever you are."
I don't want an answer
I don't want to hear your voice
But when I close my eyes I don't really have a choice

I came in from the rain
From a place I can't recall
I'd rather be insane than stuck here staring at a wall
I laid down to rest
Where you've lied before
I get a feeling in my chest that there's something more

I punch out and run
To the station by the tracks
I stare at almost everyone trying to see if you came back
When the sky opened up
And showered off the note
I knew I wasn't bold enough to give you what I wrote

The evening settles in
And makes me think of you
All will be forgiven if you'd just tell me what to do
Quietly and calm
The ringing begins
I feel the brass on my palm as I let you in
