The neighbors know me as a shadow under a porch light
That keeps them awake past 3 A.M.
But don't get the wrong idea, my friends
I only smoke to stop the shaking in my hands

But when I do it stings my eyes
But it numbs my tongue, keeps my mouth dry
So the words I want to say to you
Don't come spilling out and ruin me

My thoughts are scattered like ashes in the wind
That brings rain storm after rain storm

I kissed your lips for the last time tonight
And we both smiled silent goodbyes
Don't get me wrong, my dear
I only checked the rear view mirror
To see if you were watching me drive away

My thoughts were gathered like the fear in a handful of dust
I fought my way through bony fingers and got on my way
