No surprises here
I used to see pictures in the sky
Drawn by your hands
Smeared with the light of the universe
Like a love sick lullaby to dawn
As she lies in the sand
Dreaming of the stars in your verse

That darken her eyes
Darken the skies until day turns to night
Your song covered her eyes
And filled her with light so she'd shine when she rises
And light up the sky, like she was meant to
No surprises here

But these skies feel so empty
Like half empty glasses
Like a writers poem at midnight
In shadows frantic and sleepy
Each hour that passes
Reminds him that even his thoughts have grown quiet

They darken his eyes
Darken the skies until night turns to day
Your song covers his eyes
And filled them with night so he'd never shine when he rises
And light up the sky, like he was meant to
Still no surprises here

Bed Head
Some days I watch you sleep.
Hair like wispy clouds
Face blank as a blue sky
And your breath like the sea
Warm on my skin
Before your tomorrow begins
I watch you dream your yesterday,
Tomorrow and forever.
In an instant.
That dream fades, like a sunset.
And you wake up, grumpy little squall.
And my day begins.

In this garden
You watched me as we worked the garden,
Every blade cut in line, every hole plugged and filled.
And as time and sweat watered and tilled.

You watched.

You watched us put down and take up roots,
Parties and cricket, rugby and pets, even phone calls to lovers.
But in the rain and the regrets we left un watered and withered.

You watched

We left and you watched us still.
We grew our own gardens, watered with joy and tears.
New memories and fields that grew year on year.

And you closed your eyes.

We buried you in someone else's garden.
And returned to tend yours, let the dead earth breathe again.
And turn a new leaf, but somewhere between the breeze again,

You watched.

You bloomed.

And you wait.

Until we stand in the same garden again.

Estuary
In a room full of enemies
Including yours truly
Even when truly sometimes I’m not even yours

You speak of me fondly
And call me by name
You blame me for beauty and love for your cause

But love like an ocean
Is nearer than shadows
From my shallow stream that runs dry by your sea

Your thunder will deepen
This rain deep affection
And deep connects deep as you flow out of me.
