Where have you been?
Have you been there
Right in front of me,
In the thin of the blue unseen
Like a blonde hair
Floating on the sea?
Have you been around?
Like change in the back seat
Chips under the sofa
That rattling sound
Like a faraway sheep's bleat,
White curtains in the wind toga
Loose on the clotheslines
Flapping in the wind,
Have you been there all along?
My sadness and wonder
Walked hand in hand
Never did it rescind,
Even if bottle after bottle
The wines
Made me fonder
Of you and your memories a land
Only found song after song,
From the pain
And teary rain
My heart I could not coddle,
Were you there?
Did we share
All along the same breath,
So close will we be until our death?
Did I brush past you?
And the only clue
Was the tingle in the air
And never did I dare
Turn around
At the sound
Of a whisper
Familiar, was it her?
I'd asked many a time
And I failed to find the rhyme,
Like one does to purple,
Were you there in the shimmer
Of a whirlpool?
Like my thoughts a glimmer
To your lingering shadows homage
In the fading summer's mirage...

I know
I can't
Love you
Until the end of time
Because I don't know
If that ever will or can be,
The earth is
4.5 billion years old
And I don't see
It's demise anywhere near,
And if our souls could
Reincarnate
I'd hope to find you
Over and over again,
But for now
In this lifetime
I hope
All the words
I've ever written
Will survive me;
My greatest
Tribute to you;
Longer lasting
Than any Styrofoam
Or diamond,
And they,
They alone
Will love you
Until the end
Whenever that is so...

Eventually
The words will run out
I can only find so many ways
To describe the feelings
You cause in me,
Like every candle
Extinguishes,
Like every ember
Dies out,
Soon
There will be
No more,
I can only find so many ways
To describe your beauty
I,  your beholder
Like every
Flower wilts
Like every
Cloud rains,
Soon
There will be
No more,
I can only find so many ways
To say I love you
With and without
Words or actions,
So even in the silence
There is a sound
I've always hoped
Only you and I can hear together...

The darker the sunshine
The brighter the abyss,
She is that flower
You can see
Just past
The fence
You can't cross,
She is the song
You can hear
Just past
The door
You can't open,
She is the breeze
You can feel
Just past
The open window
With the bars you can't escape,
She is the leftover batter
On the beaters
From that cake
You can smell
But you'll never eat,
As she escapes you
Nearly within reach
A mirage you know
Is just a sundown
Away from being real,
Because she is the love
You can almost taste
Past the words you write
About your devotion to her...

Ever wish you could
Walk away
Just after
That first great impression,
Know when to stop
After you've told
The perfect punch line,
Realize when is
The ideal moment
To lean into a kiss,
When to go all in
On the hand
You've been played?
Ever wish you could
Time things just right,
For once be in control
Of falling in love,
Know for sure
Hands down
You've found
The right one,
Know for a fact
That when the chips are down
Things will look up soon,
Lie back in certainty
That the tide
Will come back in,
And you'll ride out proud
On all that you've accomplished?
Some say it's just confidence
Totally feasible and plausible,
But what about the rest of us?

Read my words
Like you play
The piano,
Like the blind
Read braille,
Feeling every
Tiny bump,
Drawing
The big picture
From an uneven
Surface,
Smoothly conveying
All the thoughts
Hidden in it's flat
Dimensions,
Unfolding bigger
Than a pop-up book
Before your eyes,
Read my words
Like children
Play in the depths
Of their sandbox,
How they taste
The dirt and fling
It at one another
Joyous smirks
Upon their faces,
Living every second
Unaware and uncaring
Not yet shackled
By the wrist of time,
Read my words
And remember them
Like stones in the river
Though they too fade
Under the rush of the water...

Just an octave
Lower than my pain,
Just a decibel
Over my joy,
She sings
My dreams,
Burnt songs
And broken records
Never played,
She reverberates
My heart
Upon her lips
One strum
Past laughter
One twang
Before tears,
On her vocal chords
I ride
The memory lane
Her voice
The wind
Past my ears,
Making my years
Feel long and short
As if all has been
A futile trip,
But I know
What she
Utters sweetly
In her chorus
Is but a reprise
Of my life,
And unlike
The fading of her song
I'm not over
Yet...
