As the salt of the earth
we ought to make men thirsty for God.
We ought to cause them to crave the
Living Water of Life.

As the salt of the earth
we ought to season men's lives with a pinch of heaven.
We ought to fill them with a desire for the
Bread of Life.

As the salt of the earth
we ought to quicken the hearts of men.
We ought to invigorate them with
power from on high.

As the salt of the earth
we must be full of flavor
or  we will simply pave the road to hell
for a lost and dying world.

The way of the Spirit is...

Love, the Spirit's essence;
Joy, the Spirit's song;
Peace, the Spirit's rest;
Longsuffering, the Spirit's patience;
Gentleness, the Spirit's touch;
Goodness, the Spirit's manner;
Faith, the Spirit's attitude;
Meekness, the Spirit's strength;
Temperance, the Spirit's control.

A Commentary on Galatians 5:22-23
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
This gift is given to comfort and guide you,
To help you in trials your spirit renew.
These words of Life are given to share,
To gelp you show others their sin Christ will bear.
This precious Book, sent from above,
Is the Sword of th Spirit, the Weapon of Love.

I stand awed before this tree in Autumn.
My eyes feast on the beauty they behold.
Against the canopy of bright blue heaven,
Leaves stand out in crimson and gold.

I stand chilled before this tree in Winter.
It stands startk and lifeless as stone.
Sad gray skies seem to frame and center
Naked branches lifeless as stone.

I stand trembling before this tree in Spring.
Once dead branches sing forth with life.
Here I witness an Easter morning
That ends all of Winter's great strife.

I sit content under this tree in Summer,
Enjoying the shade of its boughs.
I give thanks to God, the Tree-Maker,
Before Him this tree bids me bow.

The  passing thought of you,
The enchanting sound of you,
The sweetest scent of you,
The slightest glimpse of you,
The longest sight of you,
The faintest touch of you,
The boldest grasp of you,
The honey taste of you,
The warm embrace of you,
The matchless love of you,
Transforms me through and through!

In the early morning stillness, I sit upon the shore.
As I gaze across the waters, I long to see much more.
The other side, a passing boat, a storm that’s on the way;
Oh, to see through the haze that shrouds this newborn day.

The Lake of Life is much the same; a haze makes short the view.
But, as the Day of Life goes on, the Son of God breaks through.
He lights up all the world around and scatters all the haze.
Three things He gives to light my way, as I go through this day.

The first is Faith, yes faith in Christ, to keep me in life’s storms;
To guide me every step I take, until He leads me Home.
And next there’s Hope to pierce the haze, to see the other side;
And Hope that after all is done that with Him I’ll abide.

And last comes Love, blessed Charity, the Greatest of the three;
For God is love and love He did, when Christ died on the tree
With love He died to break sin’s bonds and make our weakness strong,
So, take by Faith, with Hope, His gift of Love,
And greet life’s haze with song!

When the “judges” all have spoken,
And our “friends” have said their piece;
Things will be just as broken
Or seem that way, at least.

But we will know the difference,
No one knows the facts as well
Whether others will see love’s essence
Only time will tell.

Together, You and I,
Together, though apart
Two voices, hear them sigh,
As we long with all our hearts.
Two hearts with tempos of their own,
Beat as one, where love has grown,
Two hearts now joined as one.
Makes one heart, where love has won,
One heart, though made of two,
Pounds between me and you.
This love that’s just begun,
Has grown and we are one.

To hold a rose,
to gaze upon its beauty,
brings such sweet contentment
and soothes my anxious soul.

To touch those luscious petals
to my fevered lips
by their very softness
warms my heart grown cold.

To explore the sweet perfume
that rises from its heart
unleashes precious memories
that in absence was forgot.

To hold a rose,
to cherish the sweet moment
that reverberates with love,
from when our two hearts met.

You can count on me to stand aside
when you need to be alone.
You can count on me to stand aside
when you have to do what’s done.
You can count on me to stand aside
when you’re taking care of self.
You can count on me to stand aside
when you don’t need my help.
You can count on me to stand aside
when you think that is best.
You can count me to stand aside,
but be with you for each test.
You can count on me to stand aside
and look on you with pride.
You can count on me to stand aside
yet stand always at your side.

I take your hand in mine and it belongs there.
I nuzzle at your neck and feel your silken hair
And I know we belong together.
When I feel you touch me like a feather
Or I trace your smile with my finger tips,
Or we touch with just our lips;
When the very skin and hair and fragrance
Of our bodies declare it, there’s no denial;
We belong . . .
     Together . . .
           Forever . . .
                Touching.

Of immeasurable value,
And worthy of sacrifice;
Rarest of pearls, my treasure is you.
What I could give, would never suffice.
So, I can only treasure my treasure
And give yo my everything,
And hope I’m the measure
Of the love that you bring.

No ifs, ands, or buts, just when, how, and then.
Our love is strong and will not end.
With mountain high or the valley low,
In each other’s arms we’ll find love’s glow.
It will light our way down every road,
Together we’ll manage the heaviest load.
In that glow, face to face,
We’ll love each other, in God’s grace.

When our hearts are full of dreams
and we hope for better things,
that’s when it often seems
what matters most is a little understanding.

The same is true in sadness
or when we trip and fall
and all around is madness
we need some understanding through it all.

Through each other’s eyes
as we view each the other’s heart
and heed each others sighs
we’ll always understand and never part.

I delight in finding ways
that make your eyes light up.
It may be with flowers
or just washing out a cup,
hiding piles of candy
in a place you’d not expect,
trusting in your wisdom
giving you deserved respect,
discovering a delightful way
to ease your headache pain,
kissing your luscious tummy
whether you lose or gain,
getting you a special treat
with a candle aglow on top,
writing one more poem for you
so you’ll know they’ll never stop.
Yes, I delight in finding ways
to love you my sweet treasure,
and hope I have a long, long life
to bring unexpected pleasure.

In the midst of this cold, cold world
with all of its care and woe,
I’m blessed with your caring warmth
and bask in your loving glow.

I’m warmed by the look in your eyes
that tell me it’s me you adore,
And warmed as your hand clasps mine
as my heart takes wing to soar.

I’m warmed when I hold you near
as we sigh all our cares away,
And warmed when your heart touches mine
as together we face the day.

“What?”  You say as again you catch me looking .
Looking… soaking in your beauty
Longing…to be near enough to touch
Loosing…the battle not to sigh
Loving… that I’m yours forever.

“What?”  You ask, not seeing you as I do.
Seeing…the loveliness of your features.
Savoring…the sexiness of your presence.
Searching…the richness of your heart.
Sharing…the oneness of our souls.

“What?” You ask, answering my smile with yours.
Not understanding your beauty,
Not appreciating your charm.
Not comprehending your power,
Not knowing you melt my heart with just a glance.

Does my love scare you?
It scares me so I want to drop from view.
My love for you requires so much of me,
I often wonder how a love as this can be.
You know - a thought just came.
Perhaps the fear you have is just like mine - the same!
Though I guess I'd feel then, just the same as you.
That I don't deserve so great a love,
So, what are we afraid of?

You notice all the little things about  me.
All  the  stuff  that  others miss,  you see.
So,  with a smile  or just a look,  I know you read  me  like  a book,
and  then you care and seize the moment: Just like an angel, heaven sent.
I’ve never  cared  for anyone,  like  I care for you.
Your caring touch renews my life,  like  the  morning dew.
I want to always care  for  you, like you care for me;
and notice all the little things
the heart alone can see.

I found myself;
   My love in your embrace,
      My heart in your love,
         My hope in your dreams,
           My compassion in your care,
              My partner in your work,
                My strength in your eyes,
                   My ambition in your respect,
                      My companion in your touch,
                         My home in your kiss,
                            My body in your desire,
                               My emotions in your heart,
                                  My rest in your presence,
                                     My contentment in your joy,
When I found you!

Silent, but for the beating of our hearts,
Peaceful, but for the passion of our souls,
Smiling, but for the teardrops of our joy,
Free, but for the chains of our love.
Ecstatic, but for the comfort of our arms,
Holding you, holding me;
Without a sound,
Without a word,
Saying everything.

I fear to love you –
And, yet, “Perfect love casts out fear.”
This I know and, so, I pray to love you perfectly.
You, I do not fear. I fear myself with you.
You touch my heart and soul
In ways they’ve not been touched before;
And in that touch release my spirit
Above the clouds to soar;
And in that flight, I fear to loose myself in you;
And in that loss, I fear the harm that may befall
Those who love us, too.
So, I fear, and pray, and seek to love you with a perfect love that only God can give;
To touch your heart with mine
in ways that only His wisdom can define;
and, so, to live
In perfect love with you – without the fear.

There are dreams and wishes and visions of things
That are the reasons we live as we do.
The path that we take with the challenge it brings
Reflects the motive behind what we choose.

I’ve dreamed of belonging and finding my place,
Then your kiss gave me my first clue;
And those dreams became real in the smile on your face,
As I realized I belonged ever with you.

All the wishes I’d wished for faded from view,
And all my plans just crumbled and fell
When I pictured a life spent always with you,
Enchanted and under your spell.

The visions remain as true as before,
Though not as dependent on me.
My vision is clearer, you’ve opened a door
For me to be all I can be.

It may seem at times as if I give up on things,
That I could never again stand up tall;
But the visions and wishes and all of my dreams,
Are fulfilled in your love and worth it all.

A wondrous beauty entered the room
Wide and surprised, my eyes took her in.
This wonderful woman captured my heart.
Feelings I’d concealed surfaced right then.
And before I could stop, there escaped from my lips
A word I never used to describe such a sight.
It rose from my soul and leapt from my heart,
Then rolled off my tongue with delirious delight.
It reached out caressing and caught her off guard.
Then vivaciously a smile flashed across her sweet face,
As she realized how sincerely that word did describe
How I saw in her form such beauty and grace.
Each time I see her from then until now,
That word rises, and leaps and rolls to my tongue.
And I just can’t describe her except to say, “Wow!”

It’s been a few years since you stood at my door
And I looked up and my jaw hit the floor
My eyes lit up and one word leapt out
The one word that fit, that word was
WOW!
It was your face, your eyes, that smile
And of course the dress you wore with style.
But that wow went deeper than the rose of your lips
And much wider than the curve of those hips.
It was a WOW, secretly spelled MOM,
A role you perform with aplomb,
Words of wisdom you share from your heart
With a simplicity you’ve raised to an art.
And a WOW for each battle you’ve fought
As you faced whatever life brought
And turned every minus to plus
For your kids and yourself and for us.
More than ever the word that applies
As your presence now graces my eyes
And I remember our wedding vows
The word that still fits is...
WOW!

I open up my heart to you
In trust and adoration;
And bare my soul before your gaze,
Without a reservation.
I see you do the same with me
And cherish your dear trust;
That precious gift is everything,
And give my all, I must.
As I hold you in my arms,
And feel your heart with mine;
I know when yielding to your love,
Everything is fine.
I see you yielding all to me,
As I look into your eyes;
And pray that faith will always grow
And never, ever die.

You

You
As a rose slowly unveils its treasures,
So you reveal yourself to me.
Only a rose can be worthy of your exquisiteness,
Though it pales in the presence of the beauty that is you.

You Are . . .

the quiet place where my mind likes to rest.
the smile that inspires me to be my best.
the comfort when life’s storms around me blow.
the sunshine and fill me with your glow.
the joy that emboldens me to face the“whys?”
the heartthrob when I see the love in your eyes.
the love that makes life more than it’s ever been.
the voice that speaks “I love you” again and again.

You are a mother,
Fertile and brimming with life,
You conceived not once, but twice;
And then another.
You carried them as part of you
For more months than two years
And then gave birth with pain and tears,
Giving the gift of life brand new.
One by one you held them close,
Nursed and burped and cleaned,
Then helped them the truth to glean
Even as you help each blow their nose.
Day by day you helped their day begin,
You washed their clothes and helped them dress,
You fed them well and cleaned their mess,
And every night you tucked them in.
And you did well for each of them,
As we see  now the choices they have made.
You showed the way and on that path they've stayed.
Life's touched and shaped each into a precious gem.
No matter what about in this life you discover,
Or where you go or who you love or what you do,
Above anything in your life that’s you find new;
Remember, always and forever, you are a mother!

Examined in the Light of First Corinthians 13

I know that my words, no matter how eloquent or beautiful they may be,
are meaningless without love.  My actions can make my words nothing,
but the creaking of a rusty gate. I can speak God's Word with power,
revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day and
I can have faith that says to a mountain, "Jump," and it jumps,
but without your love, I am nothing.
I could give everything I own to the poor
and even be burned as a martyr,
but I don't love, I've gotten nowhere.
So, no matter what I say, what I believe,
and what I do, I'm bankrupt without your love.

You are patient and kind; and care more for others than yourself,
You’re not jealous of others' success or conceitedly proud;
You’re not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable;
You don't fly off the handle;
You don't want what you don't deserve;
You do not keep a record of the sins of others;
You are not happy with evil, but are happy with the truth.
You don't pleasure in the shadings of truth,
You don’t force yourself on others, you aren’t ever me first,
You put up with so much in those you love,
You never give upon them;
You always look for the best in others,
You don’t look back, you keep on going and see it through.

I don’t want our love to ever die.
Beautiful words will fade some day
but I want the reality of the life that we live together
to fulfill each of us in its love.
I know I can still be childish in my thoughts, understanding and actions.
I want grow in my loving you
with the maturity, the responsibility and passion of a man.

It is frustrating that we do not always see things clearly.
It’s as if we're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist,
struggling along as best we can.
I know the weather will clear and
the sun will shine bright on our love!
I want us to see it all together,
see us as clearly as God sees us.
I want to see you in all your love and beauty,
knowing your love, and being deserving of it,
of you … of us!

As we continue hand in hand,
There are three things we can do
To keep us moving forward:
Trust God
Hope without distraction,
Love each other extravagantly.
The best of those three is Love.
God has taught me that…
In You.

No, I am not blinded by love. My wife is human. She is also amazing. This was just to let her know that, in all the ways that I fail to live up to the love I feel for her; I recognize how very special she is, and how good she is at loving those she loves, including me.

— The End —
