Beyond the weary water line
alone in quelled explore
These footprints lead uncharted miles,
the first of many more

To wander in a time once known,
reflective worries gleam
In sand dune wishes washed away
and thoughts of what they mean

This setting sun shall rise again,
bring mornings to their due
Softer shades to paint the way
hypnotic scenes to view

While on this beach of moon lit swirls
I count each star above
These tiny lights of missing you,
still glisten of our love

When now this silent vacant space,
misplaced of harmony
Where shadows play of times before
and what this world could be

Sitting here these shifting sands,
my heart does swim the tide
Ebb and flow desires sung,
of tear drops cast aside

When there a distant light appears,
so deep within my stare
A silhouette of fantasy
approaching glistened flair

I rub my eyes, once blurry, cleared
for this that I now see
Along a coast of sea foam dreams,
you walking here to me

To take me swift into your arms
dark eyes to meet my gaze
Longing for the past returned
of brighter sunny days

With lips afire on my own
and rapid pulses pace
The glow of evening’s summer light
awash upon your face

I watch as you proceed to draw
a big heart in the sand
Encompassing the two of us
within it we now we stand

Lulled of curved horizon’s smile,
immersed this blushing sky
Drenched in breaths of only you
and every sultry sigh

With midnight song and passion’s bliss
we stroll again this sea
Like waves that fall our endless strand
forever, you and me

i remember the day
when first we met;
your face i can see,
i'll not ever forget.
hearing your cry,
i sang your first song;
i was just learning then
how to hold on.

off to the playground,
i think you were three;
while crossing the street,
you were clinging to me.
when pushing your swing,
i'd always say,
'i'm right behind you, son,
i'll keep you safe.'

for years we work hard
learning how to hold on,
and then in a moment,
childhood is gone;
no longer their fortress,
our arms they outgrow;
we find we're not ready,
when it's time to let go.

we took you to college,
we set up your room.
had we prepared you?
had we too much assumed?
driving back down the freeway,
hope wrestled with fears;
our struggle to let go,
became a battle with tears.

now at your graveside,
i've come here to weep;
your guardian no longer,
now you're watching me.
though heaven now holds you,
and though hope i yet know,
it makes it no easier,
its still hard to let go.

for years we try hard,
learn just how to hold on,
and then in a moment
this life is gone.
no longer their fortress,
our arms they outgrow,
we don't get to choose when,
it is time to let go.

i still find this painful,
it's so hard to let go.
i will never be ready,
though yes it's time...
time to let go.

an exchange today with a dear, young mother and family friend about her daughter, growing up far too fast, brought memories of our own child rearing, and of this write from several years ago and originally posted in 2013. its been dusted off, with a bit of a rewrite, but stands, both in sentiment and in structure, relatively unchanged.

these words left in comment to her, i dedicate to each of you young parents... especially you single mothers.  "such is the tension of parenting... hang on too closely and a child shows signs of coddling, let go too fast, too early and a child shows signs of parental absence or neglect. the fact that you are aware of the tension means you are far more likely to avoid either extreme; and don't even think about some utopian parenting idea... there is no perfect parent!!"

I’m sending the sun,
and I’m chasing the rain
To shine its light
on your day once again

So you may smile
and your morning is fun
I’m chasing the rain
and I’m sending the sun

hot

she is hot,
a day too hot,
far and away too hot!
summertime, august hot...
do you know the kind?
the sweet smell of street-asphalt melting,
underneath the simmering waves of heat rising;
the river-eddy, current’s slow dwindling,
tadpole pond, now empty, mud-cracking, hot;
tire swing, rubber-cracking, too hot to touch,
lazy-swaying, gently in the mid-day heat;
sweat, like honey-dripping, slow sliding
sticky-leaving, dribble’s-down-the-back, hot;
the hot, popping sounds of crackling
bonfire's roar on humid, moonlit night, hot;
the distant sound of cricket’s rising chorus
in the creeping darkness,, fading, sultry twilight,
as the tree frogs slowly drown them out;
now alone, in the moonlight, she,
barefoot climbs the still-warm rocks
high above the river bank,
peels off her sweat-drenched clothing,
and plunges to the pool beneath,
to let its cool, soothing water
wash the sweat from sunburned skin,
and ease the blistering heat of day away.

.

Minutes fail to move
as I sit here at my desk,
dress shirt and tie, wondering
why am I here,
when everything I want
is somewhere else

Watching the rain
through city streaked windows
dampening the day
Knowing in another place
sunshine dressed borders
glow in summer sleeves

And a cool north wind
cries along with me,
teardrops falling,
attempting to escape
this that is here
in a different fashion

Wanting to be there,
where you are,
wrapping my arms around you
like a warm shirt on a chair
holding onto you,
never letting go

if only we would love
with our eyes
closed
and our hearts
open

we would not see
the outer shell

we would simply
fall in love with
the soul
the spirit
the heart
before us

for the rest
eventually falls away

Autumn Rose
The cold wind greeted
the hoarfrost that
evening as white
butterflies started to
fall from the dark sky.
Soon the pearly blanket
was spread across
the whole land.
It sparkled on the milky
moonlight, giving the old
willow tree a wooly gown.
Covering all the roofs,
the fields of corn and wheat,
the tall grass on the meadow.
But then she appeared,
sending fairies to dance on the
frozen lake thus melting the ice.
And with every step that she took,
snowdrops began to bloom.

Sunsets and moonbeams
in twilight design
Star dust and whispers
on breezes so fine

You by my side
just enjoying the view
There’s nothing better
that I love to do
