I gave you ink
Imprinted into the palms of my hands
And poems that were engraved
In a way you would understand

Like letters in a bottle
You left them out at sea
A heart sunk lass
Simply wanted to be
Everything
You could ever need

And its the folly
Of the lover
Who's a giver
And a swindler
Who's a thief

But oh darling
You wouldn't even leave a farthing
For you've already taken
My heart

Historical background: a farthing is an old coin used in the UK, typically a small amount

I leave gifts for strangers
In alleyways of places once been
Like a postal service
That's gone out of business
But I'm a poor girl
Just still trying to do her job

A lump in the throat
And a winter night without a coat

Language of the heart
And a raging storm about to start

Words begin to form
And a storm that leaves me without warmth

So I freeze instead
Caught on the articulation of a word
And a tempest blazing inside me
And I do not speak

An ode to social anxiety.

After twenty-one years
I have finally learned
That my heart
Does not have to be left as a gift
On the doorstep of another
And I can leave that special gift
At my own front door

Like a tragic car crash
On the side of the road
I leave flowers
At the scene of my tragedy
Where shattered remains
Of a broken heart still reside

What a gift it was
To have you in my bed
What a gift it was
To leave a text unread
What a gift it was
To leave those words unsaid
What a gift it was
To move on instead

You almost got the promotion
Like you almost finished your education

You almost made it to the finish line
When you almost broke your leg

You almost got married
Like you almost got pregnant

You almost used the knife
Like you almost told your therapist

But ***** "almosts"
Because they never got anyone
Anywhere
