Come and listen to my story about a con named Don
A poor Manhattaneer, barely kept his family out of pawn,
And then one day he was launderin’ some coin,
And up through the ground come some rubles and crude.

Oil that is, black gold, Russian tea.

Well the first thing you know ol’ Don’s a millionaire,
The kinfolk said "Don move away from there"
Said "Mother Russia is the place you ought to be"
So they loaded up the jet and they moved to DC.

D@#$%&bag Central, that is. Swampy pools, tea partyers.

Well now it's time to say good-bye to Don and all his kin.
And we would like to thank you folks fer kindly droppin’ ‘em.
You're all invited back next week to this locality
To hear a heapin’ helpin’ of their conspiracy.

Jail time that is. They’ll set a spell, take their shoes off.

They’re goin’ away now, y'hear?

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's s time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

She had moonpie eyes
and a wildcat smile,
draped by slow
smooth sip of whiskey
hair, the color of corn
in the wispy July air

And she wore purple
and white Irises speckled
with yellow as her dress,
flowing in the tall grass
beneath a willow sky

Her feet embraced
the earth between her toes,
as she twirled a whirl
of moonlight, shadowing
the daytime's blazing sun

And like a cradle rocking,
held me
like I was newborn

There above his shiny baldy head,
a long and winding comb-over,
is it white, orange or red?

A cap is perched with Krazy Glue
to keep it in its place,
or is it there to keep his head
from floating into space?

He spews blither blather
and trumpets nonsense
to wild applause
and cheer

at a raucous party
where tea is spiked

Tiny was a terrible terrorist.

First, he was tiny.
Then, he was terrible.

Whenever he wanted to terrorize anybody,
he would say, "Hey, look at me!  I am a terrorist!"
So people would look.

But because he was so tiny, they couldn't see him.
Not right away.

First, they saw Tom cheating on Mary.
Then they saw Susan dumping Harry
and Lisa buying clothes.  Lots of clothes.

They saw Billy Bob pretending to be Bobby Sue
and the IRS targeting You Know Who.
They heard Lisa cry to her mom,
and Joey getting yelled at by his dad,
but they couldn't find Tiny,
and they were really sad,

Because Tiny changed his name to Tim,
and nobody knew it was him.

I got you, Shannon Johnson
Jai Rho Dec 2015
He crossed a continent for love,
not knowing where
his journey would lead.

Along the way,
he marched into wildfires
to save lives when others fled.

He kept his family close,
along with those he loved,
in ink forever in his flesh.

And in the end it was his flesh,
riddled with bullets in San Bernardino,
that saved the life of another.

"I got you," were the last words
of a heroic life gone too soon,

"I got you, Shannon Johnson," are our words
for a heroic man forever.

Contrary to popular belief,
we have found WMDs in Iraq,
whose Tigris and Euphrates rivers
once flowed into the Garden of Eden.

But true to popular belief,
these WMDs were not weapons
of mass destruction, in the usual
meaning of that phrase,

They turned out to be wars
of mutual destruction, fueled
by fear and anger against
the most vulnerable within our reach

It matters not that good
intentions guided bombs
and tanks to destroy the
land and lives of innocents

To a man who buried his
family in the smoking ashes
of his ancestral home, or that
vengeful reprisals have no

Other cause, to a mother who
sheds tears upon her favorite
photo of her dead son, whose
body has come home

But whose blood was spilled
into the Tigris and Euphrates

And it matters not
that treasures spent
in futile efforts to fix
what through unfounded

Belief was broken,
by laying siege to
vanquished tribes
to form a nation

Foreign to their own.
And though livelihoods
and communities have
been drained of hope

And promise at home,
there is no end in sight
for wars still fueled by
fear and anger against

The most vulnerable
within our reach.

Urgent Care
Jai Rho Jun 2015
I passed by a hospital the other day
it had a sign that said "No emergency services"
above bold block letters proclaiming
"URGENT CARE"

I wondered how that could be
how can an emergency not be urgent?
doesn't a life or death situation require
the most urgent care?

And then it occurred to me
that care is always urgent
and if given constantly
there would be

No emergencies

To nuke, or not to nuke-- is that the question?
Whether 'tis nobler in the end to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fury
Or take up arms against a sea of violence
And by opposing join them. To die, to sleep--
To sleep--when we cast away all hope,
And begin the thousand years
That waste is heir to. 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be questioned. To die, to sleep--
To sleep--no more to dream: ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death no dreams may come
And no waking hour shall see the sun,
When we have snuffed this mortal soul.

When Johnny comes marching home again,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We'll send him back for another tour
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Old men will cheer while young boys fight
The ladies will cry alone at night
And we'll all feel safe until
Johnny comes home again.

The old church bell will peal with joy
Hurrah! Hurrah!
When Johnny kills another boy,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The village will be blown away
The roses won't see another day,
And we'll all feel safe until
Johnny comes home again.

Get ready for the Jubilee,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
Our gasoline costs less than three,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
The laurel wreath is ready now
To place upon his casket shroud
And we'll all feel safe until
Johnny comes home again.

Let love and friendship on that day,
Hurrah, hurrah!
Grieve as we send him away,
Hurrah, hurrah!
And let each one mourn some part,
When beats no more the warrior's heart,
And we'll all feel safe until
Johnny comes home again.

Buried Dreams
Jai Rho Oct 2014
We were pirates then
dueling swords of picket wood
on summer days when backyard pools
were Caribbean seas

We swung from frayed and creaking rope
tethered to the stolid limbs of shadegiving trees
plundering the ships we made from cardboard
and splintered pinewood crates

We laid siege to sandbox fortresses
with cannon fire from garden hoses
muzzled by the ends of our thumbs

Our shipmates were the tabby cats
and german shepherds we dressed
in tattered sheets pillaged from
lines strewn across the lawn
and patches held by rubber bands
covering bewildered eyes

We were pirates then
dueling swords of picket wood
on summer days we buried
in coves hidden along straits
we marked on weathered maps

Surviving still and sometimes found
in the darkest corners of the night
and the cloudless wonder of the day

Declaration Day
Jai Rho Jul 2014
Self-evident, but unrecognized
inalienable, but usurped
equal, but oppressed

The rights of every individual
to live in freedom and equality,
unchained by tyranny, to be
master of his or her own destiny

And when our forefathers yielded,
in the name of loyalty and governance,
blind at first to common interest,
they found their rights, their beliefs,
their liberty, eroding from the
land where they stood, from
the cherished ground they
made their home

Though separated by community,
culture, trade, religion and
political views, they became united,
to reclaim their rights, and to
secure and protect their future,
for themselves and for
generations to come

They became one people,
who set aside their differences
to march together toward freedom,
and with one voice they
proclaimed their independence

Announced not with the thunderous
echo of gunfire, but with a declaration,
an appeal to justice, and most
importantly, a pledge

A pledge to each other, to
dedicate their lives, their fortunes
and their sacred honor to their
common purpose, to a nation
where all men and women
are created equal, and life,
liberty and the pursuit of
happiness may flourish

It is this declaration
that we celebrate today,
not our victory in war
or the battles we fought,
but the pledge of our
forefathers, to each
other, to the nation that
we inherit, and to the
march to freedom that
we now must honor

Gettysburg
Jai Rho May 2014
Four score and seventy one years ago,
fifty thousand men, in blue and gray
divided, became one, in red united
to consecrate the ground where we
now stand.  From the Shenandoah
Valley, and the Potomac banks they
marched, and fell at Cemetery Hill,
Little Round Top, and Devil's Den.

But on this day, they rise to give
meaning to their sacrifice; they leave
behind their sabers and their musket
rifles, their cannon silent, their battle
done; they rise in peace at Gettysburg,
they rise at dawn with the morning sun.
