Looking Through Pictures
Hannah Sobel Dec 2012
Looking through pictures,
And hating every minute of it.
I hate the memories you have,
The people you're with,
Even the way your hair looks.

But the photographic timeline fasts forward.
Your hair grows longer
And I become happier.
Aside from a subtle hole of depression
Opening up in my stomach.

Finally I reach
The memories we have together.
Pictures on the archery range
And the dining hall porch.
The subtle hole fades.

Flipping through pictures of your work this past year,
And I wonder,
Does Molly still hate me?
Have you spoken to Jon the Texan since he left?
Do you miss them?

Because I miss you.
I'll be home soon enough,
But I miss you.
And I will try my best
Not to let you miss me
Anymore.

Undisturbed
Hannah Sobel Dec 2012
I walked into the woods with you
To find a quiet reading spot.
You shivered, and complained about the cold,
But still trudged on through the snow.

We came upon a shelter.
Shiny, snow covered metal roof
And sturdy oaken timbers,
Undisturbed.

Someone had hung wind chimes from the rafters
And they played a merry tune
Of random notes, untimed clinks,
And spontaneous swings.

I watched your face light up
As we pushed aside trees
To enter this new haven
Undisturbed.

You'd seen the books
That someone had left behind
Michener, Kerouac, and London
Made their homes here.

We found our reading spot, my love.
Where we will forever
Replenish our minds
Undisturbed.

Aries
Hannah Sobel Dec 2012
I am a typical Aries,
Ruled by fire
Impulsive
Passionate
Excitable.

If you fall in love with me,
I will protect you
I will love you
Endlessly...
Unless I get bored.

I am an Aries
Take me as I am.

The Long Walk
Hannah Sobel Nov 2012
Sit with me and listen
To a cold and wintry tale,
A story of castles, and snow
That covers hill and vale.

Inside stone walls a servant
Lived plainly all her years
She cooked the meals and washed the clothes
Keeping hidden all her fears.

For late at night the king,
In his drunkenness and greed,
Would push the girl into the stables
And attack her with his steed.

The mornings left her bruised
And unable to move.
The stableboy came and lifted her up
And washed off the marks of hooves.

One day that stableboy
Took the servant's hands,
"Run away with me," he said to her,
"Let's escape these horrid lands."

Yuletide reared its head,
The snow fell long and hard,
The servant and the stableboy
Prepared to depart.

But that fateful Christmas night,
After all were sound asleep,
The king once more to the horses
Dragged the girl from her keep.

He set the biggest stallion
To attack the poor little *****.
All her bones were broken,
Her body lay on a bench.

Even today in the stables,
You can still hear the talk
Of the stableboy and the servant girl
Preparing their long walk.

Promises
Hannah Sobel Nov 2012
Fires burning bright
And lakeside afternoons
Arms around my waist
Just listening to the loons.

And when the sun is gone,
We settle in a tent
Blissfully together
As I breathe in your scent.

The flowers blooming big,
The grass is growing tall,
You still talk of love
And promise me your all.

I guess I'm a little worried
Of a slightly trivial thing
I guess I'm a little worried
You'll offer me a ring.

The Beauty
Hannah Sobel Nov 2012
The beauty lies in a single flower.
In the stars that awaken at night.
The beauty lies in the raw power
Of a bird taking flight.

How I long to behold that beauty,
To grasp it close and tight.
To feel its warmth and let it truly
Overcome my might.

I will watch as time goes by
And the life inside me dies,
I will smile as I watch the sky.
Beauty never says goodbye.

A Lift
Hannah Sobel Nov 2012
When the blackest of moods engulfs me,
You lift me out of the darkness.
A beautiful pair of arms
Waiting to show me the light.

When the loneliness in a beautiful fall day overwhelms me,
You lift me up into the trees.
Their ever-changing colors
Reflect your eyes.

When the powers of anger penetrate me,
You lift me out of their clutches.
I watch them suffering down below us
And I feel safe.

The Night
Hannah Sobel Nov 2012
The earth is cold, but the night is warm.
She lays her head down
And the grass surrounds her.

Softly, sweetly.

She smiles and shuts her eyes
The crickets begin their song
And the stars blackness engulfs her.

Softly, sweetly.

A shadow passes the moon.
She knows it is an angel,
And the night-song sings her to sleep.

Softly, sweetly.
