God Calls To Us.
David Lessard May 2018
God calls to us,
by His great power, we're led;
to become His children,
not something else instead.

The world cannot receive,
the message that He sends;
the flesh rules thought and body,
and the sins, they never end.

We worship in the Spirit,
to us, the flesh is dead;
Jesus over came the flesh,
as on the stake, He bled.

Carnal mind and carnal thoughts,
are a barrier to His way;
no flesh can see the kingdom,
it that,  it has no say.

God calls to us;
the chosen and the few;
to dwell with Him forever,
a creation made brand new!

You can leave now
David Lessard Jul 2018
You can leave now
I've mastered the washing machine
swept, dusted and mopped
kept the **** dishes clean.
I made the bed, changed the sheets
made my midday meal
I'm keeping a stiff upper lip
pretending I still have zeal.
I walked and fed the dog
fed the indifferent cats
cleaned off the front porch
shook out the ***** mats.
Made appointments on my own
with the dentist and the doc
to make sure I got up
I set the ******* clock.
You can leave now
I can be by myself, alone
attending knocks upon the door
answering the ******* phone.

Friendship.
David Lessard Sep 2017
Friendship never dies,
good friends never quit;
they stay always in the heart,
once the bond is lit.

Once the chord is tied,
that bind never breaks;
their word is never broken,
however high the stakes.

Friendship never wavers,
through every kind of weather;
whatever happens to them,
they always stay together.

They welcome you in love,
they welcome you in gladness;
and when the sorrow strikes,
they share with you, the sadness.

Friendship never dies;
it's always on display;
it's there just when you need it,
for that is friendship's way.

Love chances.
David Lessard Feb 2018
Was it love that made
a fool of me,
or was I a fool to start with,
then fell in love?
Was I blind
before love came or
was it love that
caused my blindness?
Of love itself; is there
just one kind?

Was it at first sight or
did it come about after
several dates?
Movies, walks and dinners,
with love thoughts on our plates

I think analysis falls short
when we try to pigeonhole
the genesis of romance.
Let's listen to our hearts
before we start the dance.

But be aware of heartstrings,
that tug and pull at dreams;
many dreams are shattered,
fall apart, right at the seams.

Yet, don't hesitate to love,
Cupid always took a chance;
explore your soul as well,
in the realm that's called romance.

Praise poem
David Lessard Apr 2018
Let the light of God shine through,
in praise or in thanksgiving;
in blessings made brand new,
for another day of living.

Sing the song of His great love,
that keep the fires burning;
grace that's sent from up above,
for what your soul's been yearning.

Peace that knows no boundaries,
joy that knows no end;
faith that knows no quandaries,
stays strong around each bend.

Cast out fear from daily strife,
with the presence of His being;
with each aspect of your life,
and the glory you are seeing.

Let the light of God shine through,
with each word you share;
with knowledge of the things you do,
you can show you care.

Think of...
David Lessard Nov 2017
Think of a world
without some love;
of earth -
without a song;
of life -
without a lover,
of where your heart
belongs.
Think of a kiss
without much passion,
of hugs -
that don't feel right;
of a limpid, shallow
handshake,
that doesn't feel
quite tight.
Think of a friend,
that turns his back,
and looks the other way;
think of a child
without much laughter,
that chooses not
to play.
Think of a sky without
the stars,
no moon to light
the dark;
think of a silent, empty
world,
without a meadowlark.
Think of a world,
that has no God,
only man's "great" reason;
only man at the controls,
in this and every season.
Is there such a horrid world
when love is no solution?
then face those days of
endlessness,
with man-made home
pollution.

How Many?
David Lessard Feb 2018
How many loves can one man have?
is there a quota on the heart?
is there a barrier to love,
that keeps them all apart?

The mind does not keep tabs,
on the stirring of a soul;
on the spirit of a touch,
that tends to make us whole.

The heart is broken many times,
by thoughtless words and deeds;
the sadness and the pain remain,
not what the body needs.

Yet, once more, the flame burns bright,
and the soul meets someone new;
suddenly,  the sorrow's gone,
and we begin anew.

How many loves can one man have,
before the curtain falls?
before the race is finished,
before the heartbeats stall?

Therapeutic Release.
David Lessard Dec 2018
I was taught to deny it.
But I know it's there.
I was made to suppress it,
and I tried to obey.
Sometimes the only way
that I can express it, is this
way, through the written word.
A visual healing of a sort. Be
a man they said. Big boys don't
cry they affirmed. But I think
that I suffer more by camouflaging
it that I would by declaring it
vocally. If I could just scream and
carry on at the top of my lungs,
perhaps I'd feel better. So, please
excuse me, while I screech, ignore
me while I curse, and pardon me
as I release loudly and vehemently
all the pain I've kept hidden in my
life.

Perspectives.
David Lessard Sep 2017
I was amazed,  when long ago,
I saw my boyhood home again;
it was so much smaller than before,
or is it the mind that often rends?

The roads had shrunk, the bridges too,
was it really miles,  to the sandy beach?
things were not so far away,  but,
seemed well within my eager reach.

I used to think the world was mighty big,
the village miles and miles from end to end;
but what I once thought so far away,
was almost there, behind each shadowed bend.

Now that I have left and gone out west,
things are getting bigger - like before,
the sky goes on forever, not a tent at all,
the horizon, now unseen, from my front door.

The world is only larger from perspective,
how it's really viewed from where you are;
the studded lit-up skies, they look so close!
but it's an endless journey to the nearest star.

Dry Spring.
We pray for rain
it's the only thing to do
it's dry upon the plain
and in the mountains too.
Spring is absent in these parts
the driest month is June
it's enough to break some hearts
or go crazy as a loon.
All we can do is pray
and hope He hears our call
to send the rain this way
end this prolonged stall.
The flowers wait and droop
the trees are shedding leaves
they're waiting to re-coup
we're asking pretty-please.
We have to pray for rain
it's all that we can do
to ease these arid plains
to help us see it through!

Late winter outing.
David Lessard Mar 2019
Walking on the slick and slippery trail
mud was ******* at my sneakered feet;
on caliche ground and crumbling clay
more obtrusive with the morning's heat.

Dappled sunshine played its hide and seek
my quiet, smallish terrier trotted by my side;
and as we broke through the forest glade
we entered grassy meadows high and wide.

The wild, west wind, was blowing very strong
hanging, stratus clouds showed promised rain;
here, the way ran almost razor straight and true
with very little elevation and hardly any gain.

If it wasn't for the slippage and the sliding
this earthly path would be a pleasant walk;
an outing, generally agreeable and grand
without need of conversation or silly talk.

In the distance, long low clouds are crying
with tears formed, from ending winter's cold;
yet I'd not hesitate to come back here again
to but be a lonely vagabond, if truth be told.

The Last Laugh
David Lessard Aug 2018
Spread my ashes to the wind
where the breeze is blowing
makes no matter, east or west
I will not be knowing.

In the morning, at midday
I don't really care
in the place that I have picked
aw hell,  just anywhere.

Cremation is my choice
It is my final wish
I've always loved a torch song
sung by some jazzy dish.

Close to death, I still makes puns
making jokes until the end
when the reaper takes me down
I won't be on the mend.

Laughter's the best medicine
though far ahead I see
that the last laugh that I have
will certainly be on me.

For the good times.
David Lessard Mar 2018
I can't give you happiness,
but I can make you laugh -
there's too much sorrow now
so on that, I'll pass.
Rodney got no respect
but he left us his laughter -
and we all need merriment
for things that may come after.
The blues are fine in passing
but prolonged, we do not want -
so conjure up a smile
not something that will taunt.
Grieve, but for the moment
but good cheer is for all time -
the sharing of good memories
so better than to pine.
Let humor be a constant friend
put the gloom away for now -
and for the comic geniuses
let's give a gracious bow.

Praise Poem
David Lessard Oct 2018
Father, you sustain my life,
from beginnings to the end;
when You called me out -
what day, I know not when.
Your word gives me the truth
to me that is sufficient;
it led me to believe,
where once I was deficient.
Father, I will thirst no more,
Your words, a living fountain;
enabled me to overcome -
each and every mountain.
I grow in grace each day,
You are the one true vine;
soaking in the autumn rain -
and in the soft sunshine.
Father, you sustain my life,
I sing my praise to You;
and lift my voice in song -
You make each day brand new!

Hear my fervent prayers,

What's Left.
David Lessard Jul 2018
I remember fields of youth
where we so grandly played -
we were strong, fleet of foot
how we wish they'd stayed.

The eternal spring of loving
ah, those endless days of bliss -
when tender words were spoken
and expectations of a kiss!

The days we worked with vigor
the nights of splendid passion -
we're they then so long ago?
or have we fallen out of fashion?

Middle age has flown away
all that's left is dying slowly -
all our sins,  we hope forgiven
in the hopes of being holy.

What's left,  is heaven's arms
praying we're accepted -
quashing thoughts of hell
if sadly,  we're rejected.

Holiday Rush.
David Lessard Dec 2017
I cannot fight the traffic,
the horrendous line of cars;
innumerable and endless,
like a road of metal stars.
They cut you off in passing,
you have to hit your brakes;
where did they get their license?
at Walmart for God's sake?
They're in a hurried frenzy,
buying Christmas presents;
they're terror on the highway,
by their very presence.
The holidays are here again,
it's mass transit in full force;
it's dodgeball on the road,
and close to home of course.
And so I do my shopping,
in the coldness of the morn;
avoiding sun and racing cars,
far from the driver's scorn.

you can use it when you choose;
it's air-mailed just for you,
and only you,  to use.

You can save it for a rainy morn,
or when the clouds are gray;
or when the fog is present,
it will brighten up your day.

I'll send some flowers too,
can't hurt to have a rose;
or a daffodil or two -
so pleasant for the nose.

Best off all, I'll send some love,
you'll feel it when it comes;
the type that's always with you -
and guess what? it never runs.

Rare and treasured gifts,
for those that feel left out;
that still try hard to figure,
what this life is all about.

Lynx Lake
David Lessard Aug 2018
Lynx Lake lies quiet in
the early rays of sunshine.
no ripples to disturb the
waters,
nor harsh cries of jays,
just a stillness that pervades
and like a painting, is mute
and beautiful.
The tall ponderosa trees
dot the shoreline,
adding stately elegance
and silent majesty to
the cool air that is my
morning drink,
secondary to my two
cups of coffee but
just as pleasing and
satisfying.
I meet three people
walking their dogs
as I am doing, on my
three mile nature stroll.
Two miles north of us,
drivers are racing along
highway 69, hell-bent
for the work that
awaits them.
Too far away to
hear the traffic's roar;
I am content to be
enveloped in solitude,
among a princely forest
lost to the world for
an hour.

Praise Poem
David Lessard Sep 2018
Father, you know my suffering and pain
yet you sustain my life again and again;
you ease my suffering with silent laughter
and ease my pain for what comes after.
You are the reason for my songs of prayer
for without Your love, who else would care?
most people live for just themselves
they've food, but nothing else upon their shelves.
They bow and serve a different God than I
but never comprehend the very reason why;
they sneer and curse and say that God is dead
and live for pleasures that satisfy their head.
I am one isolated,  far from worldly being
but I know truth and what it is I'm seeing;
the soul that avoids the Lord is dying
for lack of empathy, for lack of really trying.
Father, I 'm safe when I turn my heart to You
because I know full well You'll see me through;
and I sleep, without an earthly, troubled care
knowing in my heart and mind, You're there!

Don't write to me of love
it's failed me way too much
left me hurt and angry
left me in its clutch;
I give it only mixed reviews
there's something that is lacking
why do I lose at love?
it always sends me packing;
Unanswered questions left
I'm puzzled by their meaning
I'm confused I do confess
I miss its careful screening;
Don't speak of love to me
it makes my heart to racing
seeing that I'm left alone
to feel the pain I'm facing;
Don't toss me any breadcrumbs
I've had my fill of feast
of silly dilly romance
that lurking constant beast.

honor truth and mercy
only things that last;
Your life is but a flower
a blink in time's great plan
fill your soul with love
and know that it is grand;
Fear the Lord above you
and obey His every word
lift your voice in prayer
and you too, will be heard;
Forgive ones that hurt you
all enemies and foes
Your Father watches all
let troubled waters flow;
Your body is a temple
keep it clean and pure
then you'll gain a kingdom
if in this world, you endure.

Look to the distant stars at night
see the handiwork of the Lord
see how the sun and moon do hang
by the might of invisible cord.

Watch the four seasons changing
with beauty and simple grace
and look to the heavens above
everything's in its place.

Take the baby in your arms
and marvel at human birth
that came from the dust of ground
shaped by the tendrils of earth.

Watch the love of the mother
with affection for her child
with the touch of kindness
with hands that ever so mild.

Think of the passage of life
and ask if something is odd
that some still fret and doubt

Morning light
David Lessard Dec 2017
The dew is glistening
on the tepid waters,
dawn is breaking through
the morning's haze;
I stroll on narrow paths,
and catch a heron - in
my scanning gaze.
The sun is soft on
the far horizon,
and warms my limbs,
from head to toe;
I relish early morning air,
and every passing scene,
where my feet -
bade me to go.
Solitude, it's often
hard to find -
we sometimes get,
the harried other kind;
and so I gladly walk this trail,
to know that quiet will prevail.
Early morning breezes,
fan my furrowed brow,
and the only thing that matters,
is in the here and now.
Such days, remain a memory -
carefree days without regret;
doing what it is I want to do,
escaping from the worldly net.

Take the heat of day and
soak it in,
till you feel like,  you are

then hurry to the shade,
and then,   ignore the sun.
Summer is a scorcher, in
these parts,
it's a likelihood you may
combust;
whatever way you go -
you'll turn to dust.
The skin will blister, then
turn red,
the wounds will seep, like
syrup, flowing;
you'll blister like a
ripened peach,
if you're not knowing.
Whatever happens, do not
fall asleep,
when you wake, you'll be
a lobster...red;
boiled to a crisp, outside,
not in a water-bed.
Or better yet,  don't take
that chance,
respect the heat's great
shining wrath;
is an hour way too long
or not?
I've given you the facts -

long days. hazy days,

Seeking shade, seeking water,
relishing the morning breeze;
cool showers, ice cream treats,
things that satisfy and please.
Beaches in a desert land,
dry and bare and sandy;
frosty mugs of cold root beer,
often come in handy.
Mirages come and disappear,
they shimmer with false hope;
to escape the heat, the game,
at the movies, we can cope.
Hot days, dreary days,

but still, it mesmerized
as all I did was stare.
My dog was sitting by me

and drank in the coming dusk
as I brushed aside, the gnats.
The day was fading quickly

and up here, upon the mesa,

when solid peace returns;
when we learn the truth,
for which the sad heart yearns.
I am dreaming of a new day,
with promises of hope;
with souls of happiness,
that no more have to cope.
Of things that will bring joy,
of things that will bring love;
when each day shines bright,
from the Love that's up above.

when the reality takes place;
when we've no need of dreams,

David Lessard Feb 2018
Rain falls, glistening,
on the tall brown grass
of winter,
I look and see a rainbow
to the east;
the day is ending on a
note of dying beauty,
will nature's wonders ever
one day cease?
Man pollutes, all around,
the earth's eroding,
the air, the water and the
bleeding ground;
yet in the magic of a rainbow,
there's still loveliness around.
The slanting rain are like the
tears of angels,
weeping for the magic that
now dies;
cleansing earth once more, again,
I tell you, I can almost hear their cries.
Lights are now so bright, they hide
the stars,
the cities gleam and chase
the stars away;
they swallow children in the schools
and in the streets,
we fight them,  but we just get
in the way.
We welcome soon, the prince of heaven,
to restore the beauty, truth we've lost;
to give peace to every living creature,
to purge the old, whatever it might cost.

You've got to...
David Lessard Aug 2017
You've got to love the moon,
because, by God, it's there;
like a sunrise and a sunset,
you can't help but care.
Let's not forget the sun,
it shines for me and you;
though sometimes grey,
it's often (more-times) blue.
You got to love the planets,
they hang for you and I;
amidst the sparkling stars,
on dark velvet screens of sky.
And what about the waterfalls,
that fall from the great heights;
into a pool... spectacular.
one of God's great sights.
You got to love the mountains,
that wear a crown of snow;
and in the distance, radiate,
a different kind of glow.
Whose the artist that creates,
such beauty for our pleasure?
that stores in us sweet memories,
we simply have to treasure?
He's called by many names,
like God, the Supreme Being;
By Himself... responsible,
for the loveliness we're seeing.

Ode to coffee.
David Lessard Apr 2018
Java gets my heart a-pumping,
clears the cobwebs in my head;
the rich, dark drink is fine,
I wake up, like from the dead.

Coffee is the choice of most,
to get the juices flowing;
it's the jump-start of the day,
to move and get you going.

A cup of Joe is pleasant,
two cups or more is great;
the last cup goes down fast,
any longer,  you'd be late.

It's so nice to be retired,
I don't have to "jump the gun;"
I drink it by the window,
and get the morning's sun.

So, here's to coffee drinkers,
to the daily, fresh-made brew;
to the start of one more day
by coffee...made anew.

David Lessard Feb 2018
Six minutes passes quickly,
so here's what I want to say -
God bless my fellow poets,
who rant and rave their say.

Who offer up their talents,
to share their cares and woes;
to inspire other writers,
and not step on their toes.

Who struggle with each word,
to say what's on their mind -
to give vent to their feelings,
to others, self, and mine.

Who preach the way of poetry,
that calms the mind and soul;
that examination of the heart,
that often makes them whole.

My six minutes now is up,
so I say a fond farewell -
to the poets, everywhere,
may the day for you be well.

They taken our last sanctuary,
it's become a shooting range;
where everyone's a victim,
by someone that's deranged.

The young, the old, the middle-aged,
they're all targets to the gun;
like sitting ducks in carnivals,
they've nowhere else to run.

Death to those who worship,
in prayer and meditation;
what does it say of us?
this place we call a nation?

There's no safety, anywhere,
inside, outside, in schools;
only random mayhem,
wherein the chaos rules.

They taken our last refuge
nothing left is sacred;
only mournful cries,
only abject hatred

There's a ship of fools,

it's called the ship of love
(at my last report).

They disembark with eagerness
and roam the lonely shore;

they're always wanting more.

Rose-colored glasses they wear
optimistic and well wishing;
they seek the opposite ***
it's akin to fishing.

The lure, the line, the hook
if you get my meaning;
they're putting on the front
with clever, hopeful scheming.

The ship of fools is sailing
from wherever you can think;
on seas of expectant loving
with smiles and charms and winks.

No shadows...
David Lessard Oct 2017
There are no shadows in Your love, Lord,
it shines so bright and beautiful for me;
that darkness hides from sight and being,
as it cannot stand the radiance I'm seeing.

There are no lies that trip the troubled tongue,
no deceit is found within the beating heart;
Your truth is like honey to the thirsty soul;
keeping all Your ways, it makes me whole.

There's only peace that passes understanding,
unknown to those that think they're always right;
they disclaim God;  they are but prideful fools,
unknown to them, there is a God that rules.

There are safe waters, in Your mighty harbors,
security and shelter, from this stumbling world;
unlike faithless men, that lack contented mirth,
of God's creation, and of the passage of their birth.

There are no shadows in Your love, Lord,
just the light that bears Your sacred name;
just the brightness of Your saving Word,
that illuminated me when I first heard.

Love lost
David Lessard Dec 2018
You broke my heart too many times
to say you're still my own -
time,  it never really heals
the wounds that I have known;
the battles never won,
the spats that never stopped -
weeds that shrank the flowers sown
grew out of every plot.
I failed to cultivate the ground
whereupon you walked
where you touched the earth;
you hid behind the shelter
of sarcasm and mirth;
buried all your tortured words
with lies and sweet deceit;
and compromise was just a word
but one we couldn't meet.
So I'm wishing you the best
you never really knew me;
though you pretended otherwise
when at last you set me free.

Guidelines
David Lessard Dec 2017
I do not need a map,
to get from here, to there;
from point A to point B,
I can choose just where.
I do not need a compass,
to sail the ocean blue;
a boat that's tried and tested,
will ensure that I get through.
All I need is God,
to be secure and safe;
shelter from life's storms,
from surly winds that chafe.
All I need is love,
to protect me from all harm;
and the subtle  softness,
of your cherished arm.
All I need- I have already,
I don't need another thing;
contented and at peace,
in what this world will bring.

Rainy day praise poem.
David Lessard Feb 2019
Thank you for the rain Lord
that fell throughout the day;
refreshing, and much needed
in your own time and way.
So,  resting from not walking
I played music gathering dust;
mellow jazz and Frank Sinatra
slow, sweet melodies I trust.
I read from books of culture
of you, God,  and daring men;
it relaxed me to a great degree
in my warm, secluded den.
I read your treasured word
of truth and peace and grace;
hopeful of the coming time
when I might see your face.
I gave you thanks and praises
for all the blessings in my life;
that brought me out of sin
and kept me free from strife.
Like rain that cleans the skies
my heart's been cleansed by you;
who took me from the filthy pit
to worlds I never knew.

How healthy is your heart?
David Lessard Jan 2019
How healthy is your heart?
is it evil or is it good?
do you strive to do what's right?
behave,  just as you should?

Man sees the outward being,
but God looks upon the heart;
just whose child are you?
of whom are you a part?

The way of the world's not right,
they're deceived by the father of lies:
unmoved by honest emotions,
unmoved by sorrowful cries.

Man's ways are not His ways,
man's ways are not the path;
they trouble the one on High,
and only incur His wrath.

How healthy is your heart?
does it follow the way of the Lord?
dos it seek to escape the justice,
of His terrible swift sword?

Treasured walks
David Lessard Apr 2018
There is contentment in my early walk,
my back is relishing the morning sun;
cares and thoughts are far away from me,
set aside, the things that must be done.

The air is fresh and clean, skies are blue,
my dog pulls ever lightly on the leash;
sometimes,  it feels as if he isn't there,
such are the worried thoughts that cease.

The hilltop offers me splendid views,
of town  and wood  and distant peaks;
it seems that I'm the only one around,
a sense of pleasure of the world I seek.

Far down below, the traffic is but mute,
the only sounds I hear are those of birds;
I love the feeling of my slow and even pace,
when I've no need for empty talk or words.

I delight in my need to find such walks,
with my canine companion by my side;
when from the world I find this place,
and for a precious hour I can safely hide.

Counterfeit.
David Lessard Feb 2018
You told me that you loved me,
I told you that was good;
but you never said goodbye,
like I thought you would.

You told me I was beautiful,
I laughed and said, "All right";
but you never said, "I'm leaving",
when you walked out in the night.

You said we were forever,
I smiled and said, "Okay",
but you never said "adieu",
when I thought that you would stay.

You said I was your treasure,
you said I was your prize;
but now I'm by myself,
left sorting out your lies.

You told me that I mattered,
we were a perfect fit;
but now I know the truth,
you were but counterfeit.

Retired.
David Lessard Jul 2017
Basking in the summer sun,
warm breeze against my face;
spring is now an afterthought,
of spring... there is no trace.

The heat is dry and sauna-like,
there's no moisture in the air;
the humidity is nil,
in cloudless skies so fair.

The shaded porch is refuge.
to Sol's intensive rays;
a novel "kills" some time,
of endless, sunny days.

My day begins at five a.m.,
with coffee and a walk;
it ends at nine p.m.,
with mundane, t.v. talk.

This is my retirement,
the golden years fly by;
at peace, with solitude,
that's me, myself and I.

Good morning Lord,
I arise early to greet
the rising sun;
help me stay on
God's bright path,
on this, my daily run.
Let my praise go forth
to You, in the cool
of dawn;
keep me from all harm,
let my faith in You,
be strong.
Guide my restless feet,
upon the truth I bear;
to keep You in my heart,
and the blessings that
we share.
Let Your light shine through,
to each person that I meet;
where ever it may be,
down any troubled street.
Thank You Lord for this fine day,
with each promise of tomorrow,
to the future of Your kingdom,
where there will be no sorrow.

Love's surprise.
David Lessard Feb 2018
Today - we take love, by the hand,
a gentle squeeze, (part of the plan);
a tender touch, as we embrace,
the first time, that I kiss your face.

Tomorrow - we will make it stronger,
for love to last, a little longer;
a sweet caress, I stroke your cheek,
affirmation of, the love I seek.

I hope - that in the years to pass,
we've found a bond, that surely lasts;
two hearts, we share love's golden prize,
that captured us, by wild surprise.
