If you look a little closer

On the sandy beach covered with shells
A group of teens are bashing gays
One kid goes as far as to say that
He’d **** the first queer he meets
After a while a tall blond, muscular guy asks
“Do you think I’m strong?”
The others are sheep nodding in approval
“Do you think I can get girls?”
Again they agree
“Am I a good friend to all of you?”
He seems to like all of the admiration
Suddenly in the midst of their praise
He states,
“I’m gay.”

If you look a little closer

Out on the peacock blue water
Rests a tiny motorboat
A boy and a girl sit far out on the lake
The boy is yelling at the girl
Leaning over her at the edge of the boat
Between them is a pink cell phone
With a text reading,
“ok, I love you,” from Corey
The boy is calling her a slur of horrible names
She doesn’t get a chance to say it’s her brother
He slaps her across the mouth
The girl isn’t going to stand another minute of it
She pushes back,
Sending him plunging into the peacock blue water

If you look a little closer

There’s a ******* the beach
She’s a little fat
You can see straight pink scars
On her thighs and stomach
She’s with a cute boy
Lying in the sand together
A group of girls park themselves
Within ear shot of the pair
They start commenting on the whale at the beach
When they spot the lines on her body
They talk about attention ******
How insecure they must be
The boy walks by the posse to get a drink
The girls stop him on his way back to ask
Why he’s with “that thing”
The girl holds her breath and covers her stomach with a towel
“Because I love her.”
“Well,” says the lead *****
“You must love everything that’s fat and ugly.”
The boy pauses
“I don’t love any of you.”
He walks back to the girl and kisses her right there.

If you look a little closer*

You might see

The courage to stand up for what’s right
Strength within
That love conquers all.

Beaches until the desperate
Sunset of fruity colours
The moon rises above
The high tide,
The suicidal light,
The silky sand.
To dazzle in whatever’s left
Of the dying rays of sun
Mountains becoming silhouettes
Topped with white glitter.
The night of our world
The light of another.

A boy and a girl met in distant wood.
The boy read to her poetry as best as he could.
She blushed and she curtsied to ease his nerves,
for his youth and his passions were no less than hers.

They roamed amidst the moss hanging down from the Oak
and hand on her *****, My Lady, she spoke:
"Dear boy now take easy my kiss on thy cheek,
for never I'd thought you'd make me feel so weak."

"My Lady sweet, I kiss your feet
for never I'd thought I'd an Angel meet."

The boy now more a man took his girl in his arms,
and knew she'd succumbed to his love, not his charms.
They walked towards the house leaving not one alone;
her father awaited, for her to be home.

He asked for her hand, may they soon become one;
One Hand and One Heart until all was done.
The father smiled kindly, "My son, she is yours.
Take care for my daughter, my bright Morning Star."

"My Lady sweet, I kiss your feet
for never I'd thought I'd an Angel meet."

The time came for a wedding 'midst springtime flowers,
And people gathered candy with toys 'neath the boughs.
He looked and saw his lady with bridal throng
and imagined, and remembered his midnight song.

"My Lady sweet, I kiss your feet
for never I'd thought I'd an Angel keep."

She hovered near the altar with peony flowers
and looked up through a white veil for what seemed hours.
The pastor with his bible said five sweet words,
and lovers, now angels flew up with the birds.

Long after laid an angel; stood all her kin round,
for later that day she would be underground.
her husband, her lover, felt something was wrong;
she could not go to sleep without hearing her song:

"My Lady sweet, I kiss your feet
for never I'd thought I'd an Angel meet.
        My Lady sweet, O cease to weep;
for though you now sleep in my heart, you, I'll keep."

Given the rarity of shooting stars,
perhaps it’s not best to use one
in it’s capacity for wishgranting,
to ask for your affections;
to which I’ve become nearly a slave.

Given the beauty of the lake in summertime,
perhaps it’s not best that we sit by it.
Your beauty, in all it’s splendour
would make the lake seem dead,
and rob the world of it’s worth.

Given the depth of my love for thee,
perhaps it’s best for you to stay away.
I may not be able to part from you,
and like all flowers kept indoors,
without freedom, you wouldn’t bloom.

Given that the star has not fallen,
and the lake is still beautiful,
and you are free as the sky and the surface of the lake,
I’ll be content with the idea of love,
and set my eyes in the stars above.

She's lean and lanky,
And she sinks her eyes into your flesh.
Her bones hypnotize you,
The thought of touching her off-white skin sends you into a whirl.
Her black hair sits like sin on her shoulders,
And the emptiness haunts you when she's not here.
Her cherry lips constantly taunt yours,
and when she smiles, it's like
hearing The Beatles for the first time.

Blacked out,
I found you downtown,
Passed out on the ground.
You lost track of yourself,
I cried like a child.
Seeing you fall,
It was agony no one should know.
Cause you’re my desire,
My only.
Please come home with me,
We can be happy.
You’re not really like this,
You probably know this.
I can’t see you like this.
I’m crippled inside.
From the agony I've come to know.
You’re mine, yes.
I am beside you.
Did you even think about
how far you've come?
You’ve done it now.
Would you really rush out?
You’ve fallen out.
Torn down, I am.
Down to my bare bones.
The end of the line has come.
The moon leaves a cold light,
As you fall to the floor,
Half awake—half unsure.
For the irony I’d rather not say.
Cause you’re mine,
I will lie beside you.
Never will I hide you,
I’ll be right beside you.
I am blind.

This my declaration to you,
As the days drag on.
All the things that happen
From this point on--
This is hard for me,
I am paralyzed.
I’ll keep holding on to you,
For the rest of time.
I search to find a way to put it,
In your arms I am fine.
And you rock me well.
On your back, there rests
All the stacks you move.
On your back, there rests
All the tracks you drove.
On your back, they rest
And they weigh you down.
I will fix you in the morn.
I waited to replace the
Statue in the backyard--
It’s rusted now.
All my love was there.
See that flower blooming,
Under that tree?
With its vines weaving across
It holds the key to me.
Even though it’s small,
Whatever I can give,
It is all right here,
And it has brought me to this love.
On my back, there rests
The weight of your love.
On my back, there rests
All the ways you move.
This is not the only way to say,
Just how much you’ve meant.
It’s just a hazy realization.
There’s part of me you're rocking,
Lifting me away.
And the other part is sinking,
Deep into your back.

Turn off the lamp,
Switch off the fan.
Quiet these voices
Inside my head.
Don’t you lay here with me,
Don’t you tell me your lies.
Just let me sleep,
Alone tonight.
Don’t sympathize with me.
Because you can’t make me love you
If I don’t.
I can't force my heart to feel
Something it won’t.
It is dark in this room,
I can hear your words.
You make your case to me,
In this final hour.
But I don’t, no I don’t.
Because you can’t make me love you
If I don’t.
I’ll try to sleep,
Your face I don’t see.
It’s your body I fear,
When you’re close to me.
Sunrise will come,
And you’ll hold me tight.
Just give me some time,
To distinguish wrong from right.
And you can’t make me love you,
If I don’t.
Don’t you make my heart change
What it’s already been told.
In this dark room,
Your lasting words,
Begging for mercy
In this final hour.
But I don’t, no I don’t.
You can’t make me love you if I don’t.
A response to Bon Iver's "I Can't Make You Love Me".

Sometimes I wish
celestial war paint
s across the sky
could dip and lift
my darkest thoughts away.
Every night I watch
the spicy cherry of the sun
weave through pink cotton candy.
Listening to my music,
feet dangling off the edge,
I feel on the brink of jumping,
then something tells me not to.
I miss my chance to fly,
I fear falling,
even though I know
beyond the horizon is better than
where I stand now.
I spend another day
in the murky twilight,
finished with hiding,
fully accepting.
Deep down I know,
I can let go,
but when the time comes,
my brain won’t let me.

Time passes so slowly while living

But when you look back

Life is a racetrack

Things happen so quickly

The times you lied to your parents

Laps you time and time again

We lose ourselves

In the lives of people around us

We must stay in touch

But words fly sour

When spoken without a mind.

As I air out sheets on a summer day,
flowery linens play chase in the breeze.
The weather picks up like a roar from a lion taking stage,
it echoes in the heads of my audience and attempts to pry them from my clothes pin fingers.
All my reds,
yellows, and
browns are blown and battered by fierce winds.
Inside, a flower is unfurling.
It is deafening.
It is that calm.
I want to be wrapped in a cocoon of fleece blankets.
But the wind is relentless and smells of cold,
of lying in the snow,
of watching flakes drift slowly to the ground,
it smells of winter.

I dream of flying high,

My wings are so small.

Rain flashes like a glass bottle

Smashing to pieces.

Clouds are so close,

Just out of reach.

My fingers stretch down to

The waters' clouds instead.

Finished fighting,

I'm bolted to the ground.

Everything has to be by the book. I hate that book.

One

We are a unit
We are given
The freedom
To speak of something better
To live by different mottos
To believe in stories of the past

Often, we must
Live by this book of rules
A helpful,
Organized book
I despise it
In this book
We are only given
The illusion
That we own ourselves.
