I'm locked up
In a cage
Of identical walls
I'm trapped on the page

My feet track ink
Across the lines
Rebellious, chained
But fortunately, still mine

Mazes form behind me
My mind's inner workings
Wondering about privilege,
The freedom, lurking

My legs beg to stop
But they only go faster
Tripping over obstacles
Asking for disaster

I hurdle over trip lines
Makes tears in the thin paper
But never can I break through
My weapons dissolve like vapor

I collapse in the heat
Of the unforgiving sun
Suddenly the sheet's ablaze
With nowhere left to run

I curl up in a ball
And let the flames consume me
I woke in my room
Crying out in agony
Brenna Boese Mar 2013
As your hand travels frivolously
To rest on my leg
My quiet heart races
Then faints

Awakened, I'm dizzy
And I look around
I'm not where I was
This is different ground

In this dreamworld
I wander
You take my hand
And lead me onward

There are teacups of chocolate
And rainbows of cream
Pathways of gum drops
In this delicious dream

I weep happy tears
As you lay here with me
On this sunken silk
Made of soft candy

Like sunken ships
Our feelings plummet
Into the sweet sea
They had just met

They descend into peace
Tranquility and ease
With every breath lost
They gave a tight squeeze

From one hand to the other
Between cold lips
Sweet nothings were murmured
And their tale was told

Waves turned to flame
Covered in fire
The cold left quick
Flames the new squire

The minty swirls
Overlapped and smothered
The orange licks of flame
In the dimming light

Our bodies dissolved
On lustful tongues
Our cries were not heard
From our disappearing lungs

Blind to imperfections
Eyes feign concentration
Thoughts wander
But only to ponder

Possibilities that arise,
The love in disguise
Blatantly obvious,
To the envious

Embraces tighten,
Emotions heighten
White light shines
In perfect lines

Shuttered streams
Cross in beams
Latticed like lace
Across his face

A sleepy smile
A lazy mile
On crumpled sheets
Our gazes meet

Your eyes like diamonds
Sparkling and rotund
I’d die for you,
But that’s nothing new
Brenna Boese Apr 2012
Halls of mirrors
Everywhere
And all I see is faces

Solemn expressions
Ecstatic grins
Will never fill the spaces

Left behind
And out of breath
My panting soul sighed

Frantically searching
For what was not there
I set all doubts aside

Lying down
On shattered glass
There was no hope to be found

Crimson life
Spread throughout
That recently hallowed ground

Heartbeats slow
Eyes close
Painted lips fall silent

Simple swirls
Intricate spirals
Spin around in torment

Breath engulfed
My fated lungs
As my tired eyes grew wide

My body wretched
As it breathed in life
Searching for where souls reside

Getting up
And walking out
I pass an audience of changing hues

I’m invisible
Didn’t you know?
You don’t see me, it’s only you
Brenna Boese Feb 2012
Your arm around my shoulders
Eyes gazing into mine
I realized that I want you,
For the entirety of time

Eternity they call it,
Forever, they may say,
Life seemed so black and white
Before it turned to gray

It may not be roses
Or a walk in the park
Yet, here I will stay
With you, in the dark

Candles lit
Lights ablaze
Wandering through
An unending maze

Laughing ceaselessly
Weeping joyful tears
Elbows linked
No pressing fears

With your shimmering soul
You light up the night
Brilliant and handsome
Your heart so bright

No longer my partner,
But my guide as well
I won't resist
Being put under your spell

Lines and swirls
Circled in confusion
Crossing over
And back in illusion

Their minds entangled
And their bodies twist
They’re now in knots
That form a list

Of beautiful nothings
That scrawl themselves
Black and pretty
Across the shelves

Triangles leapt
From pen to paper
Love was sketched
Ink turned to vapor

“I love you’s” were exchanged
Hugs given
Desperate cries
All lies, forgiven

Hands waved goodbye
Heads nodded in sorrow
Fingers waggled
Air kisses follow

Feet paced away
Reluctant and slow
Regaining speed
They say, “Hello.”
Brenna Boese Mar 2013
Sturdy smiles
Open hearts
Short miles
Pieced parts

Floating on cloud nine
Counting seven, six, five, four...
They spread down the line
An ancient lore

Hearts jumped to the stars
Emotions lept from the trees
Eyes wandered to Mars
Voices sank to their knees

Jupiter swirls
Blood red and white
Blind eyes twirl
Stars soar with might

Looking left
I stared at him
All noble and deft
Landing here on a whim

A flowing crimson cape
Alert, wary eyes
Stood, mouth agape
Watching the skies

Wandering near
I came up behind
Whispered a clear,
Quite quiet rhyme

"Can you fly me to the stars?
The Milky Way and back?
Wings seeming to be,
The one thing I lack..."

Taking my hand,
Didn't require words
He pulled me into his arms
And away we soared

— The End —
