Vagabond brothers in plaid patchwork socks
Crossing the street between stripes painted yellow
Stretching the avenue half past the hour
Dodging the drunk, he’s a staggering fellow
Reaching for handles of brass alabaster
Gathering things at a grocery store
Paying in cash with a currency foreign
Offering nickels, they don’t have much more
Pork chops on Sunday and sweet apple cider
Pushing their cart over ten city blocks
Still they are known for their colorful fashions
Vagabond brothers in plaid patchwork socks
I was given the title and challenged to write a poem to it

Looking on
this expanse that encircles me,
closing in during open hours,
unlocking doors I can’t seem to walk through
Stairways of rotted, termite eaten steps
each with my name painted on them,
creaking underfoot,
losing to the weight of
long lines at self serve counters
wrapping around as if
nothing is free but here
for some reason it is

And I stand right in the middle
alone in this ocean of faces,
polo shirts and penny loafers
staring at cell phone screens,
calling someone,
talking with their hands,
hands free?
Paying it forward,
coffee for the next guy in line,
but not me

For I am just here, anywhere,
somewhere like this,
a thing plopped down,
fallen from the sky,
splattering on the earth,
consumed by the soil,
muddied footprints and all
trudging through the wilderness,
carving a path of existence
breaking branches and
scattering bread crumbs

Still I am me,
standing tall among the taller,
enjoying the shade,
sipping lemonade and eating apple dumplings,
pushing, not pulling forward,
dreaming, (of course)
regardless of tire tracks and scars
or pointed fingers,
Pounding the pavement,
laying a foundation,
driven beyond

Parking lot base,
asphalt themed destinations,
a checkerboard of last rites and dead batteries,
yellow lines on the horizon,
handicapped up front
Looking out over the valley,
watching the world go by,
admiring the beauty,
loving life,
rejoicing in the fact
that it is all so immensely
vast . . .

as am I

clandestine calculations on ticker tape streamers
add to up to nothing in the vast scheme of time and space

when words fall from trees like levees breaking,

**** it

girl scouts to the rescue, if cookies can float
lined with sand bag intentions while rising waters
recede faster than the hairline of the mayor pro tem
collecting donations as his sister jumps rope
tied to the anchor of his city washing down the street

cleaning the gunk and glitz from gutter spammers
stealing passwords and paper boats
from unsuspecting children taking the day off from school
because the rains came and lemon trees no longer leaked
when anyone was looking,

ah lemon trees,

*A beautiful sunset
embraced a naked sky
in sensual reflections
as a blushing twilight waited
quietly in the shadows hoping
the moon didn’t see
Stephan Jul 2016

Now comes the night when a day fails to linger
Little by little the moon tends to dance
Lonely horizons of memories brittle
Held by my heart in a shade of romance

I am but one on the shores of a river
Slipping my toes in the currents I dream
Drenched in desire as my thoughts find her waiting
More than the beauty this cool evening stream

For all I see is an endless endeavor
Nature brings change in a challenging style
Looking beyond every fern colored shadow
Wishing to have her with me for a while

Leaving the forest I bid it to beckon
Waving farewell to the dark skies above
This now my path to her sunrise affection
Waking the day with the promise of love

*Taking a breath
beneath heaven’s glowing embers
Calling the moon
as it passes through the night
Feeling the breeze
through the branches softly whisper
Dreaming of you
under stardust shimmered light
Kicking a stone
till it tumbles past the forest
Singing a song
to the echoes that I hear
Counting the stars
when I notice one is falling
Walking alone
always wishing you were here

*Wasted words over wasted miles
Feelings written in truthful phrase
Penned emotions of soul’s desire
Wasted sentences, wasted days

Wasted visions in wasted thoughts
Promises of forever dreams
Cast aside by a change of heart
Wasted wishes, wasted themes

Wasted stanzas of wasted hopes
Perfect sunsets, the stars above
Inked affections all for naught
Wasted poetry, wasted love

Wednesday night you loved me
Thursday morn no more
Now my heart is broken
Shattered on the floor

It came without a warning
Just a little note
It said that you were leaving
That is all you wrote

Now I sit here crying
Loneliness I feel
What we had was special
I thought that it was real

I wish that you had told me
Just what you had in store
Wednesday night you loved me
Thursday morn no more

The grapes,
dangling from a leafy vine,
an off-season vintage
in well water dreams
where I come out the victor,
the gallant one
who leads her from the wine
to savor the brandy
poured slowly,
steadily
with affection

but

It is just a dream,
as I awaken
to realize
the alcoholic content
does not meet the region
along a hillside vineyard,
dripping into a café carafe
tempting fruits
that are far sweeter
than something
produced
with feeling

I was walking through
a beautiful forest
yesterday afternoon taking in
all of the wondrous colors
that nature has to offer.
Vibrant green leaves
were lush on the trees,
a bright blue summer sky
slipped through the
breeze flowing branches,
a multitude of brown tones
on the many varieties
of shrubs and plants
created a mosaic of patterns
beneath the majestic canopy above,
when I saw it, in a clearing,
drinking from a crystal clear
slow rippling brook,
it was an old deer,
a white tail I think
and then it dawned on me . . .
old deer rhymes with cold beer!
Coincidence?
I think not.
Ok, I know this is completely stupid but it was stuck in my head and I had to get it out somehow. So, here it is . . . I'm going to go have a beer.  : )

Oh, the title originally was "Poetic thirst" but I changed it hoping more people would read it.  ;)

We wrote poems together
a poetic team
Phrases of feelings
and pieces of dreams

Kite strings, umbrellas,
and blue summer skies
Wishes and kisses,
desire filled sighs

Gazing at moonlight
and coffee at dawn
So much affection
and then you were gone

Then came the clouds
with a chill in the air
Words disappeared
with the poems we shared

Now I'm alone
only darkness remains
Stanzas are empty,
the lines filled with pain

The love that we penned
something I did adore
We wrote poems together
but not anymore

What can I say
that she's not heard before
so many voices are calling

Where can I find
every poetic word
so in my arms she'll be falling

How can I stand out
a face in the crowd
from all the others now showing

Coerce her eyes
till she sees no one else
gazes my way now are flowing

When will it be
till I'm all that she wants
another her heart, won't be stealing

What can I say
that she's not heard before,
so she will know how I'm feeling

What rhymes with orange,
well I was surprised
I checked all around
till it bothered my eyes
Scanned every page
of the books I could find
Still there was nothing,
it boggled the mind
Went to the internet,
searched for a site
Still no words rhymed,
it just didn’t seem right
Finally I gave up,
it’s all I could do
Except write a poem
with the color blue
I’m sure most of you know this by now, but it is said that “orange” is the only word in the English language that has no word that rhymes with it.

When my heart dreams of forever,
only one sight does it see
Running a path to your doorstep,
resting myself on one knee

Placing a ring on your finger,
asking this question of you
“Would you please let your forever,
become my forever too”

Staring above at your beauty,
hearing your voice as you say
“You’ve always been my forever,
our forever starts on this day”

Feeling my smile steady growing,
as in my eyes there’s a gleam
For when my heart dreams of forever,
you are forever its dream

Storms wander from page to page
hard cover, soft cover, in between
a thickly clouded disguise

No shelter is wide enough to protect
from the constant deluge spilling

When you awaken
with morning skies smiling
A hot cup of coffee
and love in your heart

Feel on the breezes
my endless affection
That flows ever stronger
this day we’re apart

Know that my thoughts
they do linger about you
Hoping your dreams
will forever come true

And hear these words
that I send in a whisper
As dawn is arising,
I'll always love you

are you safe,

Silent through threatening skies,
beneath a cloudbank of tethered realities
it floats on gasping winds of final breaths,
smoky residue of lives squandered

For this is its place
among the ruins of society,
screeching along desolate highways
of fallen fences and shattered exit signs

Picking at the pieces of wasted dreams,
fragments of past relationships and
shards of broken hearts
splintering the bleak landscape

Thriving on a saddened carcass
rotting in the face of time,
reaching for minutes which have
long since been stopped

Oh what a life, it cackles,
following echoes of pleading voices
seeking that fresh meat,
rancid memories to be cast aside

As this is its idea of heaven,
eternity at the crossroads,
an intersection of stupidity and hopelessness,
where it shall feed forever
Ok, I just felt like writing something disturbing as I wait on a flight to depart.

Where will the circus fall,
leaving giraffes homeless,
as pitched tents get pitched
and sideshow freaks
become the norm,
guessing someone’s weight
who doesn’t care

When the sun sets
tablecloth desires
on a silverware runway
with dishes made of gold
and wine glasses half full
are spilled in sad regrets

Will I walk alone
on a cobblestone road,
counting windows without shades
laced with flat screen televisions
tuned to the wrong channel,
reruns in Technicolor

Broadcasting seeded visions
in open fields of tall grass
when Eric Burdon sang
and cherry trees once stood
producing the fruit
of a past I no longer
want to see

Where will the circus fall,
where will I fall

As I sit on
this lingering beach
happily lost within
silent daydreams,
lulled by a rhythmic
surf caressing a
foam laced shoreline

I realize as
the rising sun
paints the sky
in a blush of
pink oleander blooms
while a yawning morning
greets the new day

That I am still
more enchanted by
the rose petal hue
whispered upon her face
when I tell her
how beautiful
she is
She blushes when I tell her how beautiful she is to me. :)

*Lost in the hush
of a slumbering twilight
Evergreen wishes
on pine scented breeze

Fragrances sweet

a faint glow emitting

beneath heavens above

All we can hear is
the sound of our heartbeats
Tranquil the melody,
whispering love

*Painted in shades that resemble your smile
Soft on the coast rests a raspberry mist

Each time I think of our beautiful love

Why does the sun like to show me my shadow
Every morning as I start my day
So long and lanky, it’s right there before me
Seemingly happy to show me the way

Then as the hour brings me into lunchtime
It’s just a blob lying there at my feet
While I devour a tuna fish sandwich
Maybe it’s waiting for something to eat

Come later on I will see it behind me
Following me every where that I go
Why does the sun like to bring me my shadow
Someday I’ll ask him then maybe I’ll know
Dumb, I know.

*Just staring out the window
Watching patterns dance upon asphalt
Hypnotized by the rhythm
As the rain keeps pouring down
Dripping in a steady stream from the roof eaves
Forming puddles on the once dry surface
Running off to some unknown location
Absorbed by the earth
And I wonder - why is the sky crying?
Then I look in my heart and see you are not there
And I understand

Will you love me this evening
where moon beams are glowing
and fireflies play
under stars shining bright

Neath evergreens swaying
while crickets are chirping
and warm summer breezes
make everything right

Far beyond the horizon
as city lights flicker
enchanting our view
on these amethyst skies

Will you love me this evening
alone here together
and love me again
in the morning sunrise

I look for the truth
as I follow deception
Seek happiness
neath the darkest of skies
Whistle a tune
when my last breath is leaving
Accept the pain
as the mourning dove cries

Call out your name
when the echoes defeat me
Stand on my mark
while I’m pushed to the side
Harbor my strength
in a weakened dimension
Live everyday
when it feels I have died

Chasing a dream
that is still running faster
Lost in the scene
fading farther from sight
Penning a poem
with hope you will read it
Sending some love
in the words that I write

Then if I see
I have made your life better
Squinting my eyes
in your bright smile’s glow
I’ll walk away
as a teardrop is falling
With a goodbye
that I wish was hello

Without you life has no meaning
A lonely book upon a shelf
Stories held for no one reading
Waiting silent by myself

Pages turned with nothing written
Chapters come without a clue
Words repeat in shades of darkness
Sentences of lonely due

Without you there’s no direction
Empty highways ramble on
Stark and barren roads dividing
Moving constant on my own

Painted lines without an ending
Solitude at every cost
Seeking all but finding nothing
Always on the edge of lost

Without you there is no music
Lyrics sung that do not rhyme
A violin whose strings are missing
Loneliness three quarter time

Melodies in empty function
Concert halls without a stage
Choruses now gone forever
Notes erased upon the page

Without you there is no reason
Nothing but an empty heart
Never beating, always waiting
Longing for a brand new start

Opened wide as you I beckon
Fill my world with wondrous view
It’s true, my life would have no meaning
If my life was without you
Sadly I have found it is true.

A bridge above the river fern,
we wander hand in trusted hand
As each has found this sense to yearn,
illumined by a destined plan

A chipmunk scurries through the brush
to gather up the evening fare
Time moves slow, no need to rush
and us without a single care

Before a cascade flowing free,
a whispered mist beckons our eyes
To dream of our eternity
as witnessed by these summer skies

A narrow way, a winding path,
majestic trees stand far and near
In thoughts we find the aftermath
shows every ounce of love so clear

Through rough terrain of rocky ways
and valleys where the sun does shine
Of all that nature now displays
and countless words to call you mine

We pause this wobbly footbridge rail,
side by side to share the scene
Knowing that we shall not fail
to live in this our perfect dream

Death in the streets
Sidewalks of blood
Innocent souls
Slaughtered in the name of...

Monsters and demons
Life does not matter
Panick and fear
By heartless ******* who...

Claim it's their deed
Praising a shadow
Twisting its words
Till terror becomes...

A way of life
Behind locked doors
Under the covers
Wondering why...

All our governments do is...

Apologize
Something needs to happen and happen fast. Too many innocent people are dying. My heart goes out to those in Nice and everyone else who has lost someone because of a terrorist act.

Words can be seen
like a bouquet of flowers
Bringing the sun
when the skies offer showers

Forming a smile
where there once was a frown
Lifting you up

Nothing but darkness
and raindrops now fall

Sadness in puddles
collect on the ground

Sadness looms every dark corner,
spun of worried cobwebs
Threaded feelings of despair
collecting minute particles,
captured by a sticky allure,
woven in the frantic fear

Stooped in a bleak alleyway
neath dripped graffiti horror
My accelerated breath burns
in exhaled delusions
amidst dumpster definitions
plaguing the infestation

Yellow flower

I dreamt that I was floating on a cloud of velvet mist
and was a yellow flower that a moon beam hadn’t kissed
I strolled along the treetops like a spider on a thread
while listening to the echoes of a choir dressed in red

Then stood along the border of the place where we once met
and whispered to a butterfly so it would not forget
To gather up some star dust in a braid so finely spun
that we could use to swing away beneath a summer sun

I walked between the lavender in purple blooms so high
that seemed to tickle as I jumped now reaching for the sky
Just wandering about this place where rainbows glow in twos
enchanted by the magic of their brightly colored hues

When there beside a lily pad where crystal waters flow
I saw a perfect smile and my eyes could not let go
And as you stood to greet me I was bathed in wondrous bliss
a lonely yellow flower longing for your moon beam kiss

Your lips like melted butter with some sugar on the side
their taste made me delirious, oh this I could not hide
When then you said, “this is a dream and soon you will awake”
I answered you, “it matters not, your love with me I’ll take”

Its then I woke to find my pillow gently ‘round my head
I thought about the dream I had and all the things we said
Then turning now I see you as your smile comes to me
You whisper,”kiss me yellow flower, my dream you’ll always be”

Parallel visions and sifted thoughts
on an amber thread, thin as the beliefs
once found as hope, now falling
beneath sorrowed wings gently gliding

Through hazy eyes and broken tears,
tarnished memories flow within this dawn
as you fade off in the distance, soaring ever higher,
disappearing beyond the horizon

Silence fills the maze that is your mind,
leaving you staring at dead ends and fractured turns,
as the realization that you didn’t matter
forms on clouds of whispering breaths and no one cares

And in the end, you are not sure yourself
from where you once came, a blotted image
on empty shorelines of tangled debris
which may be easily forgotten but endlessly haunts

Still you fly on, seeking those patterns,
abstract meanings that flourish within
the heart of this wanderer, eyes focused
on all of the beauty that awaits

For you know she sits, above the border,
just past the last exit of sadness, dreaming,
always dreaming the same, you do matter,
you do, to her

You tell me you feel
that you no longer matter
Sunsets and moonbeams
they all seem to shatter

Dark clouds and sadness,
a heart filled with  sorrow
Lost in today
and afraid of tomorrow

Just take my hand
so I can find your smile
I know it is there
you will see in a while

Let it all go
it is time to start living
I offer friendship,
that's what I am giving

Not here to fix you,
I know that you're broken
Just here to offer
some kind words now spoken

Hoping you see
in these thoughts I do scatter
You're special to me
and you truly do matter

Your ink,
sadly spilling
on fresh tablecloths
with torn lace trim
beyond paper napkins
absorbing the smiles
you should be smiling

Darkened tear drops
drenching emotions,
free flowing sorrows
collected in fractured phrases,
penned stanzas now
erasing happiness
in dull pink smudges

When just outside
the sun sits behind heavy drapes
drawn tightly closed
on panoramic picture windows
waiting to frame the beauty
of spring for your eyes
in nature’s poetry

So open them,
(your eyes and the drapes)
behold the wonder
where small children play
and laughter scents the air
allowing light to enter that ink,
your ink
