In the wake of our love
Stephan Jul 2016

Her eyes like
feathered whispers
traced the lines
of my swirling
heart

Softly flowing on
stardust glimmers,
echoing chills
of moonlit
kisses

Enchanting touches
leaving desire’s
ripples in the
wake of our
love

If today were my birthday
Stephan Jul 2016
.

If today were my birthday,
I know what they'd say
He doesn't look older,
not even a day

He moves a bit slower,
a methodic pace
And there are some new
wrinkles formed on his face

His hair is much thinner
up there on his head
and before the sun sets
he's heading to bed

But look at his poetry,
he writes about love
The moon and the stars
and the heavens above

He's still young at heart
and it flows from his pen
Especially when he writes
about her again

He looks quite the same
after all of this time
For age doesn't matter,
if he can still rhyme

South of the border
Stephan Jul 2016

The morning sun greets
from an eastern horizon

As smiles trickle down
from the north up above

While right here I stand
in a western direction

South of the border
that sends me her love
Stephan Jul 2016

Will you love me this evening
where moon beams are glowing
and fireflies play
under stars shining bright

Neath evergreens swaying
while crickets are chirping
and warm summer breezes
make everything right

Far beyond the horizon
as city lights flicker
enchanting our view
on these amethyst skies

Will you love me this evening
alone here together
and love me again
in the morning sunrise

Wondering why
Stephan Jul 2016
.

Death in the streets
Sidewalks of blood
Innocent souls
Slaughtered in the name of...

Monsters and demons
Life does not matter
Panick and fear
By heartless ******* who...

Claim it's their deed
Praising a shadow
Twisting its words
Till terror becomes...

A way of life
Behind locked doors
Under the covers
Wondering why...

All our governments do is...

Apologize
Something needs to happen and happen fast. Too many innocent people are dying. My heart goes out to those in Nice and everyone else who has lost someone because of a terrorist act.

Courage is spilt
Stephan Jul 2016
=

Chaliced of dreams in a drunken condition
Staggering phrases now leak from my pen
Courage is spilt from a bottled delusion
One hundred proof as all time does suspend

Kissing the floor in a faceless direction
Slurring each word that does tumble my page
Combing the gray, forceful discrimination
Cursing a mirror that challenges age

Lips painted fire, poetic her features
Low cut and staring, a phrase slips my tongue
Desired conclusions in walk away stanzas
Pour me another, the night is still young

Lyrics of your smile
Stephan Jul 2016

Your beauty sings harmony
with a cantata sunrise,
euphoric melodies in viola
and piccolo lingering
‘pon a lavender haze
of periwinkle whispers,
symphonic poetry
afloat of dawn’s breezes,
ecstasy in tangerine desires,
wafting concertos of passion
as I listen quietly
to my day once again
beginning with the perfect

Left in a poem
Stephan Jul 2016

Naive is the poet
who thinks what he's written
will capture her heart
with his melodic song

Yes, he was once good
but it all dissipated
when someone much better
just happened along

Now he cries in the shadows,
his pen falling empty,
conceding defeat
to another so new

While all of his dreams
have been left in a poem,
wishes in verses
that will not come true

Here lies a poem
Stephan Jul 2016
.

Here lies a poem,
once a thing of beauty
flowing with love and desire,
inspired by affectionate dreams,
adored by many for the feelings
it contained for another within,
now nothing more than
irrelevant thoughts and words,
lifeless phrases and stanzas,
weakened and aging verses of
mid-sentence fractures
overtaken by youthfulness
as it seeps deeply
into the void . . . forgotten

Here lies a poem
that is far too old
for its own good

and as I sifted

trying to put it
back together again,

recognize from before,
it was you . . .

Promises, promises, promises
Stephan Jul 2016
Promises in a burlap bag
slung over your shoulder
offering three for dollar
(I've already heard it twice before)
Maybe this time I will be lucky

I found a penny heads up,
but didn't have the sense to pick it up

Still an echo spins atop a broken record
repeating the same chorus
no matter what song is playing
that all are tired of hearing by now

Oldies but goodies are just as bad
as the first time you heard them

Spinning yarns
in coloful fabric weaves,
braided possibilities that never
seem to shrink in the wash

The button for gentle cycle
broke a long time ago

But there is always that chance
when we lean on words
hoping they support the message
delivered once again

*Chances are like matches,
using the last one is always bad luck

Forever too
Stephan Jul 2016
.

I don’t know if skies are blue
or if the lawn holds morning dew
I’ve not a thought of something new
or where the hummingbirds just flew

How sticky might just be that glue
or where’s the rose that I once grew
If shore leave can deplete a crew
or if we’re having homemade stew

It matters not if beer is brew
or if the day is almost through
If all I had was one black shoe
the other one a brownish hue

If there’s a lot or just a few
or if the mantle hides a flue
If lions live outside the zoo
or share their cages with a gnu

All I know is what I do
I spend my life just loving you
And if my nightly dream came true
then you’d love me forever too

Floating the

Counting

Sharing a
kiss that

Holding
each other

Feeling our

Only for you
Stephan Jul 2016

Simple reminders of conscious belief
Filter my mind with the moon’s silver glow
Satisfied truths sent to spell my relief
All that my beating heart now needs to know

Sensual visions to capture the feel
Bringing the contours of wind sculpted plains
Temptations cry out for all that is real
Filling the void that I now can explain

Cloudless these evenings of star sprinkled mist
Shimmering soft on the eclipse of love
Delicious the thoughts of your warm tender kiss
Found in these endless illusions above

Memories harbor the times that we’ve lived
Photograph remnants of places once shared
Telling the story of all it can give
Building the dreams now worth capturing there

Still we are standing alone on this eve
Counting the points of the bright scattered light
Dreams can come true if we only believe
Whispering prayers on this warm summer’s night

Hear my desires a float on the breeze
Finding their way to the one I adore
Listen, my love, for I hope but to please
Biding the time till you’re with me once more

All that I ask shall be all that I need
Merely the chance I may prove ever true
You are my life and in that I believe
Eternal my love will be only for you

Watching the rise and the fall of a kingdom
Walls once rebuilt again tumble the ground
Allowing the beasties free reign in the village
Bellowing out o’er the wickedest sound

Pacing the streets, seeking out bits of garbage
Leaving their stains on the innocent few
Leering in windows where children are hiding
Tender young things and so easy to chew

Thieves in the night lurk about come the morning
Stealing the sun at the break of the dawn
Drinking of sewage a’ flow in the gutters
Checking off names as the many are gone

Peering ‘round corners, down alleys, in shadows
Seeking the favor of all who do grieve
Laughing in spite of the torment now growing
Licking their lips in the hope you believe

Roaming in groups so the followed outnumber
Say what you will for the king does not hear
Lost in his throne made of mirrors that flatter
Shivering, cowering, caving to fear

Deaf to the villagers asking for reason
Blind to the pillage befalling this land
Dumb, well I guess that just goes without saying
Nary a care what the people demand

Feasting on turkey, potatoes and gravy
Raising a glass to the enemy proud
Taking a stand against those who support him
Locking the front doors while yelling aloud

“Carry your torches, your pitchforks, your honor
It matters not for this evil shall win
Even when gone there are echoes of anger
Lingering on till they come back again

Give them your all, what you’ve poured your heart into
Down on your knees, bow to them one and all
Step over rock and the piles of rubble
This castle will stand even when the walls fall

Shout all you like as no change is forthcoming
Accept it or flee, you think I give a ****
When you are gone many more will replace you
Now pass those peas and a slice of that ham”

So roam the beasties, their teeth ever sharpened
Fanning the flames as so many are burned
Tearing apart what the people envisioned
Silly to think that they somehow had learned

Nothing so happy with no ever after
Always the same, it will happen again
But unlike some other long winded stories
Sadly in this I can not say “the end”

Watching the rise and the fall of a kingdom
Walls once rebuilt again tumble the ground
Thankfully I can peruse from a distance
Witnessing all without hanging around

Don’t take for granted
Stephan Jul 2016

Don’t take for granted the love of this woman,
the wonderful one who has stolen your heart
Cherish your every moment together,
miss her the hours that you are apart

Stand and protect her in armor clad fashion,
show her the sun when there’s rain in the sky
Walk hand in hand down the path of affection,
take to the clouds as the two of you fly

Stay by her side when her worries start growing,
give her a hug just to show that you care
Tend to her dreams so her world can be magic,
hold her so close in these days that you share

Whisper soft lyrics as melodies linger,
paint her the sunset you see in her eyes
Promise her all she could ever imagine,
pen her a poem of romantic sighs

Conquer her fears when her teardrops are falling,
caress her skin that is soft to the touch
Kiss her with passion between those so tender,
prove to her always you love her so much

Tell her she's beautiful and you adore her,
now is the time, it’s not too late to start
Don’t take for granted the love of this woman,
the wonderful one who has stolen your heart
I hope you like this one, it kept me up half the night last night.

I met you
Stephan Jul 2016

I always dreamed
of being a poet

I met you

that dream
came true
Stephan Jul 2016
...

I read the news today, oh my
Koo, koo, kachoo
The fox in is charge of the hen house
Gates are secure but the creature is inside
Feathers fly in helter skelter patterns
“You’ve got to crack a few eggs” is heard
as those who hear, scramble
seeking the sunnyside

A dozen or so duck the falling shells,
raining down from straw filled verses,
bland but obviously first in the pecking order,
hoping it all would be over…easy

While down on Broadway a church mouse sings off key
"Grabbed my coat and grabbed my hat,
ate the cheese in seconds flat,"
to a blindfolded audience
waiting to applaud till the curtain goes down,
so not to be seen greeting late arrivals
with luggage and tickets
hoping the next show is not sold out
for this standing room only presentation

Fortunately three, maybe four seats still remain unoccupied
as stale popcorn and sticky floors beckon them to
crushed velvet seating with
back pocket indentations left behind

The lights go down and the band strikes up
a rousing intro to what should be a good show,
at least that’s what the reviews said,
5 stars, Brilliantly directed, The best choice
for your daily intake of culture…

When a tuxedo with a smile
makes its way to center stage
and begins reading backwards,
“I buried Paul”

Boos rang out from the crowd.
“We came here for poetry!” was shouted in unison
But it just kept on, “Number 9, number 9, number 9”
The audience ran for the exit doors (stage left)
and as they hit the streets looking for something better,
“Turn me on dead man” echoed after them

Meanwhile, back at the chicken coop…
Props to The Beatles for the few snippets I borrowed, in case you didn't notice. :)  "I am the eggman"

In as much
as all they say
That time is what
you waste away
With numbers
posted on display
To think that
it is free

When counting minutes
on a face
Leaves moments you
forgot to trace
Expand yourself
through time and space
Be all that
you can be

For every tick
does brings a tock
It can not be
that big a shock
When twice a day
a broken clock
Is right for those
who see

Rejoice within
each passing hour
For you my friend
have got the power
To touch a heart
as seconds shower
These times on
you and me

A place I am not
Stephan Jul 2016
.

The morning sky is dark
as I stand in the shadows waiting
on an empty Tuesday disguised as a Monday
Hoping for a happy welcome but finding silent
rejections in unwritten emotions left
elsewhere for those who remember
what it’s like to smile within the
playful intentions shared,
and a frown is all I am left to wear

All I wanted to do was love you and
feel like I was someone you cared about,
not a brittle twig lying underfoot
waiting to be stepped on
as you run to the others
who beckon your heart,
make you feel special,
give to you those things that you need,
unlike what I bring, embarrassment
wrapped in a frilly bow

Still I am here writing to you,
hoping my words, my verses are read,
so you understand how I feel,
all the while knowing full well
I don’t meet up to those who . . .
those who satisfy your needs,
those you can't wait to be with,
those who make you happy,
those who overshadow my sunshine
in a place that is much brighter,
a place where you thrive,
a place that you love,
a place I am not

Skiing on snow
that is made out of pepper
Dodging and weaving
though there are no trees
Taking a turn
that is straight as an arrow
Hitting the ground
always causes a sneeze
Feeling the cold
even though it is summer
Sliding much faster
than what I had thought
Nearing the bottom
where dinner is waiting
I’ve got the snow,
can you pass me the salt

please
I know, dumb, but it was fun to write
Stephan Jul 2016

*I’ve not the time nor moments free
to flail about in wayward flow
Or dance the streets in cobbled glee
with steps that I no longer know

To walk among the falling leaves
in colors painted autumn past
or sail about the seven seas
from ports o’ call yon ships are cast

Traverse a mountain born of stone
along a pathway’s winding spill
of jagged berth in footprint shown
I’ve not the strength, nor I the will

To paint a fence of acres far
where cattle graze on sunny fields
or stare upon an evening star
enchanted by the light it yields

For every minute I can find
is spent in endless thoughts of you
To swirl about my focused mind
and every other point of view

To use the ink within my pen
and write the words I’m thinking of
In fine poetic verse I send
my promised and undying love

So please excuse this horrid mess
as others chose to bother me
They do not hear what I profess
I’ve not the time nor moments free

He sits on a hill
crying tears of rejection
Searching for love
but to chase it away

Calling the clouds
hanging low in the heavens
Blind to the light
in its abstract display

There all alone
hearing voices on breezes
Swears it is him
they are talking about

Recording echoes
on pages of reasons
Counting each one
on his fingers of doubt

Feeling the sweat
as it drips past his hairline
Filling the cracks
that have formed on his skin

Drowning the dreams
of the flooded temptations
Closing his eyes
just to try once again

Falling apart,
tiny pieces now crumble
Pebbles of life
cast to reaches below

Back to the earth
if the soil will have him
Maybe this time
something better will grow

Deep within the lyrics
Stephan Jul 2016

The closest thing I know to love
Is something I am thinking of
In every sorted worry that my mind decides to share

While drinking heavy in the past
Inside the shadows I now cast
The bottom of the bottle lets me know I am aware

Collecting on a shouldered score
Finding it is nothing more
Than voiced in my confessions of imaginary scenes

Reaching for a photograph
Searching for its aftermath
Tuning off the station in the middle of my dreams

The fury of this drunken bliss
Reminds me of your tender kiss
And ever since I felt it, it is something that I long

For in the end this fairy tale
Reminds me of my quest to fail
Deep within the lyrics of some broken hearted song

Counting on the sunset
Stephan Jul 2016

Midday and it is half over,
another lonely day without her,
lost in the lingering silence
No echoes drift on the breeze,
only fading hopes gathering in the hot sun,
pacing methodically back and forth
filling my questioning mind,
still afraid of the answers I might find

And I collect minutes like daisy petals,
while hours chime "she loves me not"
as I sit on a weathered park bench
staring down at my ever reaching shadow,
grateful it grows longer,
once more counting on the sunset
to bring another day to an end
so maybe the pain will as well
Stephan Jun 2016

Parched and dry, this barren field stretches,
I wander, head hung low,
staring at the emptiness eclipsing my thoughts
Brittle blades of grass disappear beneath
my worn out sneakers,
black and white crushing beige
in slow fashioned footprints of blistered dust

“My sanity for some cool water.”

When upon my shoulders, reddened by solar intensity,
wet from exerted energy, comes a breeze
as if Autumn has come to claim her colors,
to gather her brown and sepia landscape,
pull the lifeless trees, with little leaf
from the chalk textured ground taking it
where it would suit another, for this is my luck

“Take my shade I beg not, for it is merely a branch.”

Like fingers of a silken web’s reach,
a soft caress of skin is not understood, though very pleasant
Nature finds me a shiver, a small comfort in this arid place
once crawling with snakes of assorted length, now
green as if lush has just been defined
with sweet air and pomegranate skies featuring a glow,
pristine shades of which I’ve never seen, heavenly

“To whom might I thank for such a gift?”

When before me stands, my eyes saturated and lost
slowly focus on beauty, winged loveliness now smiling within my own
personal oasis, which quickly forms in my heart
An angel, a goddess, extends a hand to me?
My cracked and weathered palm touches, smooth, gentle
her hand as she lifts me, I am weightless, floating
to her, my breath leaves me as I wonder, is this my end?

“If this beauty shall be my final curtain, let it be dropped slowly.”

A voice of velvet speaks, as I fade in and out of reality,
now steadied by her touch and the sweet scent of lavender and lime
“I have come to you as a verse, for poetry is thy keeper,
thy words have been heard,” lyrical this voice sings
melodic and harmonious, a rhythm to the beat of my heart,
the race of my pulse, the love of my life, my muse, my all

*“Eternal to you I shall write, for your beauty fuels my pen.”

Then what is the use
Stephan Jun 2016
.
In a cavern long about the edge of time
dwells a sadness deep upon my heart,
where fragments of my imagination
cry out from a desolate vault,
iron clad and riveted
of a stone mason’s might
Welded shut, encrusted with fear
and loneliness in unsealed envelopes
addressed to someone other than me

Where neighbors retrieve and process,
regardless of names and stamped signatures,
unwilling to pay the postage now due
of an encased memory shoveled
away to linger on each crow’s feather
that falls from the reaches far above my head,
dropping square tears from round eyes,
mapping my cheeks
in solitary traces of vertical weeping

Self imposed some may say,
and they could be correct, though
when it comes to forgotten, that heart of gold,
worth more than its weight in life,
pays more attention to the fate of others
than collecting breaths of this or any
next door, across the fence wisdom
For if they hurt, those who shouldn’t,
then what is the use

With heavy stone in hand I tap,
loudly on the reinforced tarnished structure
in a series of dots and dashes,
rhythmic chaos to some,
but patterned to the beat of my heart
saying, you are loved, you are cherished,
you are needed and most importantly,
you are not alone, hoping the chanting echoes
land upon listening ears,
and you can smile once more
and I can feel it

soothing each beat of my heart
Comforting me
as the long day is ending,

Cool evening breezes
a’ whisper the branches,
signaling twilight is soon
Twinkling stars
shining bright in the heavens,
fueled by the light of the moon

My perfect dream
as I fall off to slumber,
closing my eyes for the night
Keeping me safe
beneath evening skies glowing,
holding me ever so tight

Every day

is filled with a wonderful bliss
Enchanted moments,
now and forever,
because of the love in

Little frustrations
Stephan Jun 2016

Stand in my way
and I'll just go around
Nary a grumble,
not even a sound

Stuck out in traffic
won't phase me at all
Bumper to bumper,
slowed down to a crawl

Standing in lines
that are endless it seems
I do not care
for I'm lost in my dreams

Sitting on hold for
an hour on the phone
I hardly notice
the minutes have flown

Paperwork piled up,
I've so much to do
Doesn't upset me
so soon I'll be through

Losing connections
where signals are bad
I'll just be patient,
it won't make me mad

Little frustrations
I faced everyday
Have all disappeared,
you have chased them away

Nothing will bother me,
not any more
Since now I've met you,

Sorrow now drizzles from lingering clouds,
drenching my life in despair
Dampening spirits a’ fall of the rain,
empty these puddles I stare

Drowning in loneliness filling the day,
void of the sun we adored
Flooding the vacancy found in my life,
steady the reasons now poured

Floating along every gutter of fear,
weathered my face of the storm
Crying as caverns appear in my heart,
gaping the holes that now form

If this shall be what my destiny brings,
slowly I take my last breath
For I am nothing at all without her,
drifting this current of death

Take me for I have no reason to be,
sink every dream I have known
Hiding from truth that I don’t want to hear,
forever lost and alone

What is it about poetry
that so consumes you
Brings you to your knees,
cowering in a corner
of your own delusions
Reading in between the lines,
finding what is not really there
Dropping hints of absurd defiance,
collecting spoonful after spoonful
of puzzled meanings and chaliced dreams

Flowing symbolisms, metaphoric landscapes -
Where bushes are bluebirds
and sidewalks - bridges of no return

Why do you reach
into your pocket, searching for love
on white paper folded into a square,
when all along it faces you -
not in ink, but in smiles
expressing exactly what is felt
No boundaries or disguised emotions
penned in rhythmic sequence,
only true love, standing on this sidewalk -
which is only a sidewalk

What is it about poetry
that so consumes you,
when love is waiting – just outside the lines

I sat on the beach where I’d rather not be
and pictured a merry-go-round
Followed a wave crashing in front of me,
calliope music the sound
Picked up a seashell that washed up on shore,
rode a giraffe colored green
Laid in the sun till my red skin was sore,
lost in a carousel dream
Felt the salt air as it flowed off the sea,
melodically moved up and down
I sat on a beach where I’d rather not be
*and pictured a merry-go-round

Quilted desires

Woven secrets
on silken sheets
whisper softly,
lingering atop
the quilted desires
of our love

Safe in the glow
Stephan Jun 2016

Bright as the midsummer stars on the sky
Your love illumines my way
Soft as a candle flame flickers the eye
Enchantment so warm on display

Moonbeams now glisten the path to your heart
Shimmering sweet on the air
Even these moments which find us apart
Sparkling gleams we will share

When in the darkness I find I’m alone
Searching for merely a trace
I see a beacon to come bring me home
Lit by the smile on your face

Take me and lead me, I walk in your light
Sent down to me from above
Held in your arms where I know all is right
Safe in the glow of your love

What rhymes with orange?
Stephan Jun 2016
.

What rhymes with orange,
well I was surprised
I checked all around
till it bothered my eyes
Scanned every page
of the books I could find
Still there was nothing,
it boggled the mind
Went to the internet,
searched for a site
Still no words rhymed,
it just didn’t seem right
Finally I gave up,
it’s all I could do
Except write a poem
with the color blue
I’m sure most of you know this by now, but it is said that “orange” is the only word in the English language that has no word that rhymes with it.

P’d off

Pressing patterns patiently protecting priceless pillowed pleats
Proudly pasting photographs of proper preening parakeets
Pushing plastic pinwheels past the park where purple peacocks played
Panoramic pixies practice prancing down the promenade

Paying people for providing pizzas to pentathelets
Picking peppers privately, politely pleasing prom petites
Painting pulpits perfectly in places preaching pastors prayed
Posting pretty poetry on paper pages on parade
Just having some fun on a Friday.

Stir the pot
Stephan Jun 2016
.

Hide behind those rooftops
Staring down upon the crowd
Tossing little messages
You dare not say aloud

Looking over shoulders
Every shadow that you see
Assuming something lurking
Like a long lost refugee

Stir the *** of sewage
That along the street does flow
All will know the truth is there
In spite of what you show

Spread it to the audience
Or anyone who hears
Fuel the mass confusion
As you amplify their fears

Silence can be golden
Though it’s not your chosen art
As a stone that cries for moss
the rolling soon will start

Clinging to a chimney
Spewing signals made of smoke
From the fire down below
Conspiracies now stoke

Leave these happy people be
They’re none of your concern
Questioning the same as me
When will you ever learn

A Ghostly Tear
Stephan Jun 2016
.

*O’ crooked branch and magpie’s claw,
yon rusted chains a’ sway this night
Clutch tight a sign “The Seagull's Squall”
of splintered wood and storm clouds fight
Old tavern lone this craggy shore
where angered waves accost the sand
and drenching rains from heavens pour,
whilst thunder boasts its loud command

On creaking stools with painted legs
'long the bar, a gathered crew
Expected flow from aging kegs
a frothy crown this lagered brew
Fills tankards held of one now gone
'midst pewter death in golden ale
In drunk'n stupor sorrows shown
lost at sea, his soul last sailed

Watching cloaked of shadowed mist
in darkened corner, lingered smoke
O’er long goodbyes on echoes twist
and couraged voices soundly spoke
Weaving tales a' journeys past,
voyages beyond the deep
Ports o’ call and forth day cast,
of treasures that abound to reap

When one, a glass above his head
beckons silence, moments slow
Respect, our mate now swallow'd dead,
entombed within the depths below
Then hearty cheers and farewell speak,
this touching scene if one would be
A ghostly tear now falls my cheek,
this fallen mate they cheer is me
I had a UPQ moment.  : )
