A sedan pulls into a gas station, cutting me off
Full of five Irish thugs
Do you know how to get to the hospital?
Be careful
Said the biggest one, several scowls
Ok I will, smile walk home lock door they did it again
This was kind of similar, only it was
One guy, quite huge, in our home instead of near it
And he was much more specific
About how he would **** me
Bullets
Or
Blade
I will be back tomorrow
This happens to me a lot, I thought

Lucid in a lush landscape, baked by burning Savanna sun
The undeveloped endlessness all encompassing
My feet sink into the tender tissue
Of Green Mother and Infinite Father’s lovechild
The watering hole is overpopulated with thirsty families
Suspiciously inspecting the albino primate
I make undeterred deliberate steps skirting hydration
Drawn to his penetrating and omniscient orbs
A genuflect to show respect, my head bowed and gaze on ground
The mighty titan mimicked me and extended peaceful welcome
Gradually I rose and full-figured, approached
Warily, minding his twin osteoscimitars
Hello friend, he said
I heard you coming from several years away
I have been waiting for you
In a thousand forms and figures as the shadowy shapes you doubted
But Wisdom, how?
Baffled now, as I follow worn creases of age
That line his cracked and withered face and date his hardened hide
Come see yourself as I see you, he said
For we are as old as your mind is young
And he led me to the liquid, still and reflective
My own visage now ancient
You often sought me out, and I never hid
But I always came too late
I am with you in every action
Every success and every mistake
I was your hand when you learned to hold on
And your ears when you learned to listen
I was your adrenaline when you lost control
And your uncut blood tunnels when you learned to live
I was your arms when you hugged a forgiving embrace
And the nausea you felt when you lied
I did not mourn you when you died and scattered
For you returned to me as many; come, we have much to teach and learn
We will raise the bulls of a generation
Without another word, I mounted sacred pachyderm
And we became a vortex for wandering energy universal and fluid
The venerable sage and I rode as equals through the night
The savanna sky resting its tired eye at last

In a growling, mixed parts automobile resembling
A scrap-metal Frankenstein
A driver pauses at a green light
Stalling parking lot traffic on its steaming blacktop treadmill
To greet an old friend through a missing window

A father in full camo and combat boots drags a nic-stick
And guides his wife and children through sardine walkways
In ninety degree June heat on a Boston street
His daughter swims in his thick wool, long-sleeved army jacket
Beaming

A lonely teen with fear tears and a pay-to-go-phone
Calls for help, and receives no reply
The frustration drains from his cursing voice
He shakes the hand of the silent one who was with him all along

Sirens wail, cars clear, leaving an empty trail
A snake pilot shoots the gap and ditches his stagnant lane to tail
The ambulance turns off its indicators; the patient didn’t make it
Their apparent apostle gets home a few minutes early

A blue peace keeper sleeping in his loser cruiser
Does not stir as tax dollar drool dribbles from his lips
A speeding truck nearly creams a pink backpack
Somewhere, a woman is *****

A husband and his frail partner leave the office of a medicine man
She walks aimlessly towards a wall before she is redirected
Careful Magoo, he says with love

Two bodies in an apple apartment
Being a two-backed beast
The bed creaked
They did yoga on the floor instead
When the love was made
He did not leave
She did not cry
They were both perfectly satisfied
Glistening bodies fused together, linden and oak until the end of time
Their statue remained erected
In her desk drawer he left a letter and a list of reasons
One reminder for each day to be spent apart
Alone on the platform
He read her equivalent
And waited for the train

Full of children

They do not like the game I made

I ask for help but he is glued to the screen, sitting with former friends
I go crazy in the bathroom
Vision distorted, face warped, mirror as always
I try to pick up the ruby dragon scales littered on the ground
No dice
My hands become transparent
And they don’t budge
I lose track of time
When I come out, everyone is gone
You’re not very good at this, she said
See that door?
Never pass through it
Never leave
And you will see no trouble

The next night
I ride my car through a dark town, streets void of lamplight
I find her childhood home
I speak with the ghost of her father
Among the spiders and rotting walls and yellowing pictures
There is no hope here
I try to scream
No sound from a dry throat
You’re so full of pain, she said
I can feel it in you
Everywhere
I wake up
Unable to breathe
Like that time
I choked
To death

Arthur Bellow was a mellow fellow who never asked for much
Only child to a land man and wife who worked the earth
Their self-sustaining ranch the heart of farm and winding wood
They raised their living stock under siege from thriving crops
A private clan, Mr. Bellow kept to his collection of books
His wife would weave, would also read, and would take their terrier for walks
Arthur tagged along, full of creative verve and eagerness
The river, forest, beasts and wind were friends; they often spoke
He attended local schooling but had trouble fitting in
The children who mocked him he envisioned as cold blooded lizards
His reptilian teacher reprimanded him for tutoring one on his test
Arthur left the building vowing never to return
Committed himself instead to the plow, *** and plant
Back breaking labor from morning ‘til day’s end
In rest he walked with mother finding faces in the bark
The creatures kept him company when family was insufficient
Under a sunrise hotter than most tragedy struck the patriarch
Trembling and perspiring he dropped weak to his knees
His life muscle ceased its beat as he saw his flash of past
Arthur came running when he heard the music stop
Mrs. Bellow came stoic and pale, speaking only with her feet
Ordered her son to dig a ditch as deep as strength allowed
And once complete she lay her husband down and joined him in his sleep
Arthur begged and pleaded but she made him fill the hole
He bathed his mother in dirt like she had washed him as a babe
Sealed the grave with tears and sprinkled seeds like she’d instructed
His dog licked calloused, blistered hands to show not all was lost
He dropped the shovel and tried to yell, but yawp came forth as song
Arthur never left the farm or tended fallow fields
He managed what he could but the task demanded aid
A solitary man enjoys his island with friends he doesn’t call
A lonely man, however has no company at all
He caught a shrew-like thief one day with eggs he planned to steal
Being the only other human, he let him share a meal
The suspicious shrew fled through the now-unfriendly wood of lizard eye
Where the rumor speaking, mad old hermit seeking came to spy
Arthur had discovered he was not alone at all
A crepuscular couple returned to parley when the sun would fall
He found them in the library, alerted by the loyal one
Whose growl turned kind when wraith he’d find were family reunited
They visited quite often to keep him company in twilight hour
To praise him for his learning and kindness that he showed
For in their absence he had lived in books to replace all trace of school
And the seeds in the central grave that Arthur raised began to grow
His parents, very pleased, shared their otherworldly plot
Arthur was to release his goodness and knowledge to the air
Although no rewards would come to him, intrinsic deed be done
The forest heart would be reclaimed, and rest would come for flesh
In the next noon Arthur freed all beasts and let them walk away
Release from domestication, the mighty horse dark in tone
Turned golden as it left him, gorgeous and majestic
The terrier was last to leave, sad though it understood
Once empty, Arthur doused the house and then the barn in oil
Shattered his lantern and transferred the flame until they were engulfed
The local fighters came and did their best to end the burning
But despite all efforts the library sublimated in a cloud
When every page was turned to smoke he called upon the rain
To cool the glowing remains and give his friends a final drink
The men brought Arthur to custody for witchcraft and for arson
He smiled for even as he left the ground had grown more green
Immediately put to unfair trial, opposition ready
It would seem that the town in full demanded his demise
Arthur chose to represent himself as he supposed all men will do in time
He recognized the witnesses whose accusations boomed
The reptile claimed he was dishonest and a cheater
The little lizard spies said instead reclusive necromancer
The suspicious shrew told tales of Arthur luring him for ******
The fighters full of fear said a conjurer of the elements
Without a chance in the eyes of men he was taken to a cell
Feeling quite betrayed by the many he’d wished well
Arthur thought of his parents and wondered why he was alone
They appeared to him once more, apparating in his cage
My son they said in unison, you have been misunderstood
And spent a lifetime serving others for no benefit of self
For this your friends are free and the forest muscle flexed and hard
As blossoming beacon; in death the noble feel no pain at all
Upon hearing misplaced song echoing through damp stone structure
A guard investigated, preparing to beat the troublemaker
He came upon Arthur’s cage confused, head cocked and jaw dropped
The door was locked, yet the man he came to punish was no more

The years went by so fast, she said
Something with his stomach
Common problem for the big guys like me
The fireworks we watched from the jutting rock
Blocked shooting stars and myths in sky
But all I saw were big brown eyes
Speckled sweet with honey
I mourn in silent solitude
In a cramped chair
On a bus
Full of coworkers
Families waiting with nervous needy children
Expecting smiles of anticipation
Aching knees hurt half as much as smallest scrap of heart
Tonight I will weep for him after the children are in bed
I stopped believing
In god

Pulled aside to take a ride and keep a woman safe
His violent requests had earned a hospital visit to assess
The teacher and I stopped his brawl and the woman brought the car
With a fisherman added to the crew we departed; bodyguards
Highway gusts were funneled through narrow window tunnel
And slammed slammers in their disguised eyes, flanking the hopeful one
The fisherman and therapist kept calm with blank expression
The hopeful was distressed, surrounded by muscled strangers
Hospital staff turned skeptical on contact seeing bruises
For even sturdy boys will not require three grown men
Clearly uncomfortable with new role of enforcer
We sat in the waiting room confused and uninformed
For we had met the hopeful boy moments before departure
And even through the visit we were more strange than friend
In our line of work we learn that goodbye’s are forever
So I don’t plan on seeing that hopeful boy again

Memories and stop signs
This is a moving train
They took it away
Who are you?
And me?
Get out of my head
You know just as well as I do
We don’t belong here
No maps, no ceremonies
We’re replaceable
Headlines and lights out
Starving
Stop asking
They’re going to send you back now
I saw them
Clawing, fighting, scratching
Locked in white now
We’re safe here
Just concentrate
Stabilized, he’s breathing
Where am I?
She’s getting worried now
They could be anywhere
They could be anywhere

That pressure in the chamber
Last reflection of tension
Return to find it
I know we stole something
Scared, counting
Like magnets
They waited together
Spread the disease
Light the message
We don’t have very long
Would you stop me?
Dig a hole, exposed
Tell the story child
She’ll forget, he’s coming
Snow, it was snowing
Bad days
Help me leave it behind
Inscribed, crumble
We all fall down
Chronicled by who
Let’s see where it takes us
Time to wake up
Don’t be angry

We walked in peace right through the door

Sideways face in mildewed waste as legs and arms were trapped

Flesh in nails and teeth in kick
Gagging sputters mucous river
Choking, sobbing, cheek to dust

Clenched, clammy, and bulging with strained strength
Periodically overcome by shadows of pathology
This night he begged for help through gaps of cyclical consciousness
A funeral trail for clarity ambled solemnly to the gymnasium
He was surrounded, and they plotted, and advanced, and he was engulfed
They were upon him like a ****** seeking seed or vulture carrion
He seized on an arched back and suffered under octodemons
On that hard wood floor under dead bulbs that swung like momentous pendulums

Explained in eloquent detail and prophetic tone his will to ****
Blacking out to full extent
He was amygdala, he was instinct
Battling grown poachers until they stole his fearsome fangs
Clipped his claws, and painted over his stripes with calm

Bleach became my boy
The container impenetrable, sanitary sanctuary
I bled soap suds through unclogged pores
Exposed without the film that blurred all interaction
Flash freedom and a taste of humanity to new buds
The light stung my eyes, and I turned to hide
Hasty retreat and acceptance of defeat
I saw a doctor, and he gave me a shot
But forgot
To clean the wound
Or change the dressing
Infection claimed me and drove me mad
I ran home barefoot in a hospital gown
Dodging bats and rats and wolves
And I dove into the mud, rolled about
Bathing in soothing gratification
Caked in routine and ruminating about the choices and the fall
I watched the sky, contemplating zero or more

Leaving only a crumpled chrome shell

Groggy eyed with an absent mind
He led me to the den for music making
A second sent me untrained vibrations
Out of tune and practice, too; songs from a time now gone
A third paced with pale face and wandered naked in a robe
Shifting eyes as if the spies did roam
He jammed another negative noseblow
They all did in turn

They nodded off
Or started to
They mentioned college
For a few
And how they weren’t going anymore but sheep find sleep in woods
And so they should
The time had come to disentangle the knot
Knead the very tissue that their issue had so tightened
To the degree that they could not stand
And head became their bed became their dead
As their chins dropped, lids drooped and bodies slumped into a pile
I forgot that I was sitting straight and had been for a while

In a mesh perspective, young and old

To morph his pain to bop
And achieve the wordless cohesion of sardine schools
Through plucked coiled steel, if it cost him all his years
He knew the notes, but now he would conjure color
And shade them through his pineal prism
Until his dancing phalanges could spill coral reefs and sunsets
Old told him how music had saved his life
And in the war he was permitted to leave his truck
To press on black and white, tamed but untrained
The Japan grand was lame, but officers smiled

Gather your tools and let your inner self become a melody

Everyone was honey, and heart attacks were delicious
He gave her a bag filled with

Not a word was returned
But her chatoyant glazzies watered
And he swore for

Disproportionate, I thought, to the months he'd spent
Planning a tribute for her origin day

Ran down his hand; he hated sticky fingers
The comfort in his veins made him cloudy, the track on his inner arm throbbed
He thought about the bully who’d beaten him senseless
For spilling lunch milk on his shoes

They said the river widens but we stayed and kept our view
Being satisfied to share a partnered spot along the bends
Some rocks require quarry, settled still we need but two

Water rises, water falls, rain retreats and drops again
Yet the levels cannot meddle in a bond so strong as stone
Our pebbles growing from our fusion will meet their river own
They will step across our backs for founding guidance in their path

Even the rocks will fade, my dear
To the lapping of the rapids
We will crumble into silt, I fear
But I want to erode with you
Turn to dust and flow along the way
From permanence to naught
Embracing nothingness until
Our sediment compressed is one

Chimpanzees can learn to recognize
Their own marked bodies
In mirrors
If raised in a space of social welfare and stimulation

We learn
Who we are
Through others
To be is to create
Bridge the synaptic gap and grab a fellow by the dendrites
Spew chemical transmission down their receptors
Until they are a person
If you care for another you will do this
Be the brain

We call it a casse-tête, she said
A “break head” if you prefer
We are each trying to fill in this
Jagged, fractured outlook
One piece at a time
On occasion you meet a corner
And they unlock for you new progress
(I think I have even found; a foothold in the face)
Others are peculiar, shaped like spilling liquid
Filling unique holes perhaps unknown to undone artists
Our greatest folly as we find our relative perspective
Would be to assume any kind of now-complete picture
We are dove tailed, ami
In ornate carpentry fine fitted
Angles filled with oil drops to help us burn eternal
An esprit ouvert, she said
In your tongue an open mind
The wise do not distinguish
Value forms of every kind

The transparent roof covered her from sudden precipitation
Ice pellets pelting the ground around as she waited for the bus
The shufflers and grumblers huddled in the booth for cover share
Riddled with cold holes from liquid *******
Look at them, she thought
Untold stories in a crowd
Grey figures among the concrete and the puddles
Blank pages thickening unread novels
Returning home to stagnant plots and forgettable characters
On the auto she scanned the library for research-relevant titles
A fairy tale cuddled publicly, all lips and hands and smiles
An anthology with stained sections and shredded, well-worn binding
Scribbled frantically to transfer himself to more unpublished page
Give up, she wanted to scream
Paper dies and no one reads
No longer did she believe in hidden literary gems
Far too many friends had rushed their tales
Conclusions writ in sharpie slop
Conclude she had in pencil but the writing hand would never stop
Not for cramps of authoring nor material that she lacked
Not until the cover closed
From which there was no flipping back
Perhaps I am an article, she thought
Meant to be short and skimmed
A brief point to be made and greater issue slapped within

She wondered something dreadful then, a tremor in her bones
She never understood the other chapters, stories, poems
Reflecting in her epilogue, would she even know her own?
My pen was never full
I am illiterate

Successes plus failures
Divided by lifetime
Does not equal a man
You are more than the sum
Of the moments you cannot relive
And the moments you cannot undo
Freedom breathes in the insignificant
Recollection is not your prison
Peaks speak loud in passing
While the footprints line the level ground
When travelling the shortest distance
From B to D
Remember your straight line
Intact

Maktub saw the light at the end of his tunnel
It approached him with a barbaric screech
Doppler shifting to piercing, painful pitch
On the wrong side of tracks he watched the train charge past
In his new freedom, he explored the station
Wandering through the grimy halls by
Too-busy roaches scurrying from the bright
A burpy crumple lump sat propped against the wall
Reeking of sick and
Filth and dead liver
Maktub bought him a sandwich
And left it on his lap, with a dead president
On whose face he had jotted a blotted
Don’t drink me
The *** woke to this, and
Bless you friend, jaundiced beam
Bless you back, sir
Restored faith in (chances) chances

Some teens whizzed unpaying under turnstiles
On rolling boards, lying on their backs and holding bags
Maktub found them clever and pursued
In a secluded spot they made aerosol spray mural
Mischievous hands intricately crafted as cans blasted
Through their mist emerged a mighty orb of life
And in blackness round twinkled possible worlds
He admired their vandalism; art is everywhere, he thought
At sound of step the mural makers
Dashed, leaving colors and can
Maktub raised it, unfamiliar, and finished the wall with
We are one

Returning to his platform, he saw that more had gathered
And a strumming bard, milk eyed, fluttered notes with dancer’s grace
Her voice sent shivers down his spine and lifted him in spirals
I would recognize the
Song of God, he thought (and I know where he is)
The screeching came again, and Maktub
Leaned to watch, eager for his light
His train had come to take him home
He was calm
He was ready

How do you make your writing unique
I asked, how do you create images that no one has seen?
The poet answered
The trick, he said, is not to create the unseen
It is to describe things everyone sees
In a novel fashion
Have you ever seen water?
Sure, I said, everywhere, what does that have to do
With anything?
Well, he replied, snowflakes are made entirely
Of water, which is everywhere, and yet
They are each unique
One does not need to invent a substance
He needs simply to use it in a special way
Make snowflakes from the water around you

Interesting, I thought, but where do
The ideas themselves come from? How do you capture them and write them?
The poet smiled at this; I most certainly do not capture them
Imagine catching butterflies with your bare hands
If you ****** them in flight, you will damage their wings
And you will not have the beautiful creature you wished to obtain
If you allow them to approach you, however, or approach them gently
You will maintain their level of excellence
And when they are finished they will
Float away, weightless

Wow I said, what a wonderful scene
But how do you know to believe in these things, in what you write?
The poet chuckled
Well, he said, they were apparently able to move you
And I just
Made them up

You are why men build monuments
The real things
The beautiful things
They are simple; they are temporary
Will your jagged photon flash strike twice, impossible?
The sands of time spilled from the hour glass
Long to be struck on their beach, melted to window
To be transparent at last in your return

In a shipwreck near the shore men swim to
Supposed safety, and almost make it but lose
Strength, and
Die in your violence too soon
They swam but now they float, the sky lit like celebration in the tempest

The complexity of a mindseed ends in day form
Expand and react, ebb and flow the empty
Bottle captain stagnant he sails nowhere from
An observable exhibit, he goes down with the lady
And drowns in consumable liquid could spare but she quit
Drinking, the none empty bottle captain crashes
Parched on the grains
She isn't
Coming back

Careful to make respectful steps, she padded lightly through
The grass a weaving wanderer
Investigating the stone garden with
The ashen faced man calling her name
He was perverted, but insightful
And he shared the roots of the stone trees
A wealthy merchant lay with
A poor laborer
Side by side and synchronized demise-wise
Death, the pale guide said, is the great equalizer
Life is not fair; Death is.

Pictures marked the grander tombs and one caught
Her searching eyes, reptile
Slither serpent slinks and eats circular self loop
Symbolizing eternal, consume-die resume
The local ghost noted vert reaching rest stones
******* competition in the inadequate hereafter

A corvidae watched, perched: “wait your turn”, then fly sky
The cold wind eavesdropped on
Her chestbeat, early cycle thumps (time) to spare
Knowing her fear
The winded skeletons of the stone garden howled like wicked tuning forks

Under flickering streetlamps, tongues and soles
Slapped happy paced on concrete in retreat
All around the Shadows tore limbs from quaking cores
Panting, sweating, exhausted,
The Adam ducked by a moaning body
A blue, authority stripped as he suffered in a puddle
No one, he croaked
Is safe
The Darkness leaked from his wounds
The Adam ran again before he faded into night

Cars were totaled, stranded smashed and broken
Exhaust still polluting from dead engines
The roads in ruin littered with expensive empty things
Crunching underfoot as The Adam waded weary
Abandoned, the city crawled with ugly sin
Black creatures feeding on human remains
Plucking victims from the excess
Grinding, punishing teeth gnashing

Some ran, but the
Onyx ones caught them eventually

Junkers injected their Coal colored chaos
Until the Ebony jones snakes slithered
Into their hearts

Seeking sanctuary, The Adam heaved a rock
Through the window of a school and climbed through
Scratchy glass
The carvings in the board stole his sense of safety
****** nail art
“It starts young, the long night”
More of the Tar creatures made raging racket on the
Door then and The Adam ran again
Leaving the malleable minds in their stinking now-done coffins
Full charge down the hall, ram head collision
Teacher turned raving loon the kook grabbed
Him in a vice
The Evil ones had removed most of his face but his
Intact eye focused, and cave shouted
“The only infinity
Are space and
Mind, all else will
Meet its time”
And with that he did

Sick and alone, The Adam wished to escape the pain of
The outside world and spun run spirals to the roof
His beating chest ached and tore, he shed tears no more and
His cavity unleashed
An Obsidian dragon emerged, massive and
Violent upon the night
The stars cried themselves to sleep as
They were eclipsed by Umbra wings

The beast burned the city
Down while The Adam wept
And drifted the darkest demons
Live within, why run
