You know I use to be a dreamer
I could find joy in anything
And I was happy just to know you
You always made my heart sing

But rude awakenings befell me
Reality crept into my bed
Then the one that I loved most
Showed me that our love was dead

You know I use to have a vision
Of a love would never die
Of a soul that would stay with me
For long past the end of time

But my eyes grew old and narrow
And my heart grew far to wise
There’s no dreams left for tomorrow
And yesterday’s have died

At first you thought I was a hero
A man who knew just what to say
Then when you really got to know me
Your fantasy was swept away

I was who I always had been
But I wasn't who you'd seen
And I wasn't who you wanted
You'd bought yourself a brand new dream

Now there's no echo in the hallway
And the bedroom's full of pain
Your smile use to be pure sunshine
And your soul a cleansing rain

Now my heart's a dusty dessert
And my life a long, lonely day
That just slides into tomorrow
And tomorrow's just the same

You know I use to be a dreamer
I could find joy in anything
And I was happy just to know you
You always made my heart sing
