Nikki Love
To Nikki Giovanni

Poetry and rhyme
And reason
At any season
You're the mother of words
Unexpressed to us so
And this I know.

Nikki Love---
I love to hear you express yourself
Like no one else
Who can or will express
What you feel inside
My Nikki Love!

Mother Rosa
In memory of Rosa L. Parks

Freedom.

You carried that banner
For us all
And for all of us you stood
The test of time
And weathered every storm
In order to bring
On FREEDOM as our goal and place
FREEDOM in our sights.

You sat down
So we can move up,
You sat down
So our children's children
Won't give up or give out.

You carried that torch
Of FREEDOM in order
To bring hope for others
Even in a dying world
Where race is an issue
You were the one
The barrier of that light....

Sunday Shoes
inspired by my wife Vanessa....

Can you walk a mile
In my Sunday shoes?
Go to places I've been long and wide
Or some places you'll pay your dues?

Can you wear my shoes
That danced in God's praises
Cutting a step or two
Head reared back and voice raises high
Those old dusty Sunday shoes.

I walked places far as well a near
And back again to anywhere
To any place I want to go from here
And then again.

To marches long for freedom's cry
To church on a dusty country road
To the fields where cotton grow high
In my old dusty Sunday shoes.

Can you just walk in
These old dusty shoes?
Being foe or either friend
In those old dusty shoes.

If i have to walk to hell and back
I would in these dusty old shoes
But I only walk to church in them in fact
These old dusty Sunday shoes.

I'll keep walking in them until
The Good Master calls me home
Hoping someone will someday fill
These old dusty Sunday shoes.

Freedom Cry
in memory of the children of South Africa

Freedom!
Lifted out of the ashes and into a river of hope
A river of joy
A river of peace.

Cry freedom!

Freedom!

As a country dies
And children die because of
What they believe in

Cry freedom!

Freedom!

You jail them in your jails,
You ****** them,
Torture them,
Burn their schools and home
But we still

Cry freedom!

Freedom!

You can do all these things
And make spoils of it
And yet tell them they are not free
But we will with all our hearts--

Cry freedom!

Freedom!

No matter the strife
Feeling powerless at times
When there is no power
But yet we will forever---

Cry freedom!

Freedom!

You break us down
Break our spirits
But we forever

Cry freedom!!

City Beat
Traffic jam
City limits putting limits on me
As traveling long these streets
And from far as eyes can see,
A crowd of people piling one on top another
As I travel these *****, dusty city beat.

Sirens blow their same refrain
As it wails and wails like an old song
Beating, beating across my brain
Not softly but continuously wrong
As I travel these *****, dusty city beat.

Urban renewal still old
Never changing, maintaining by leaps and bounds
Never changing, still maintaining so I am told
And all hear are the sounds
Of these *****, dusty city beat.

Smog clutters the brain
As I deal with these so-called problems
And walking the streets making me so insane
Trying to find work in hopes the solution to solve them.

The suits are telling me economics is fine
But if it's fine why the hell I am here?
Feels like I am running out of time
As time runs me down and it's not clear.

Cursed by lost time
As I walk these *****, dusty streets
And the world ain't kind
While I walk these city's beat
Now I sit waiting on my time
My time to shine onward and beyond...

This Is Who I Am!
Brother,
Lover,
Poet,
Freelance writer,
Son,
Grandson,
Nephew,
Godfather too.
Christian in transition
Whose life changed in so many positions
Through so many persons and faces
Changing from many places.

Dreamer of dreams
Poet of the extreme
A deep thinker of thoughts and ideas.
Undercover comic relief
A man who had its share of sorrow and grief,
Walker of many miles,
And who puts on many smiles.

I'm no ego tripper
But a man who reaches for the Big Dipper,
Commanding dreams to come true
And a person who also encourages you.

People lpver
never undercover
But face 2 face with you
A thinker so deep like an ocean blue.
A dreamer who goes beyond the stars
No matter how deep or how far
This is who I am!

I maybe a gem in a rough place
But I am the person with that face
You'll never forget
But in time your mind will set
On the things I told you
And all of this is surely true
Of who I am to me.

Child of the '60's long ago
i write these verses to let you know
Of who I am so listen well
As I finish this to tell
For this is who I am!

Black Man
Trying to do what's right in this land
For this is who I am
This is who I am!

Listen my people!
The cost of love
Cost your lives
In order to get along
Without somebody.
No excuses
Or taken!
We live in this world
So get along!
Go beyond race
And race for the common goal of love.
Stop putting guns in each other's hands,
And hand them an olive leaf of peace.
Educate,
Relate,
No hate!
With open arms
Show compassion
Show love.
Let's tear down the wall
And love again.....

The Invitation
You are invited
To a life eternal
With an Everlasting King.
You need not a thing,
But to accept Him,
Into your life
Just let Him in TODAY!
You need nothing else
But be willing to except
The Invitation
To let Him into your heart
Just let Him today!

No More Tears
There will be no more tears in Heaven,
No more cryin' there,
No more sickness there,
No more sorrow or shame,
When we gather around the throne
To crown our Beloved King.
As Mahalia sings,
And Gabriel blows his trumpet loud
To the Glory of God,
There will be no more tears
To shed.
Glory, glory,holy, holy, holy,
God Almighty we sing!
Tears ain't enough
For tears of joy in Heaven.

So the Heaven's rejoice!
Let every voice be lifted up in Praise!
Rejoice I say--
REJOICE!

Poem : sunrise
The night stars and moon
Has gone to bed as the sun is up
And the day begins anew once more.
As the day meet the sky
And the birth a new day is freely new
I welcome the sunrise
The new beginning of a new day
Of a new start today.
The day maybe long
But it gets better as time goes on.
The hustle and bustle of the day shift
As morning turns to noon
And noon turns to afternoon
And afternoon goes back to evening once more.

Skin
Brown
Black
White
Red
That's the skin I am in
My skin that I am in.
Look real close
What do you see?
A human being in the skin I am in
In the skin I am in.
My hair may have braids,
Corn rolls, picked out , picked over
*****
Straight
**** bald headed,
That's the skin that I am in.
Northern
Southern
Eastern
Western
No matter where I am from
That's the skin that I am in.
Take a closer look at me
And tell me what do you see?
A human being in the skin
that I am in
That skin I am in.

You, Me and the Moon
In your eyes
I see a different light,
A lighter side of you
And that's when I realize
How beautiful you are to me.

From the softness of your skin,
The wonderful smile on your face
Beauty that's outside in
Divorcing all other thoughts of you.

From Cleopatra of my soul,
To the Halle Berry of my dreams,
You are one well-put together woman I would like to know
No matter how crazy it may seem.

Like the sweet nectar in the morning
I bathe in your loving arms
Your love, your love is showing
Making me sweat from my head to my palms.

You with me alone
Basking in the moonlight
With such love and appreciation shown
That really makes my night.

Me with you together
With words unspoken the best way
No matter the weather
With nothing really to say.

Moonlight O moonlight,
Can you just shine on me please?
Make our night such a delight
As I kneel on my knees.

You, me and the moonlight,
Alone together night after night,
How 'bout us?
How 'bout you and I?

The Soul of Jazz
The soul of Jazz
Where Jazz is soul
And the soul of Jazz is within.
Bringing back the days of old
Where jazz was Jazz and Jazz was soul.
Coltrane, Davis, The Duke playing in a style
That lives and breathes like wild
I love for the soul of Jazz
And Jazz as soulfully divine
A form of music you'll hear is no sin,
But a crime if you mistreat it so
Misuse it leaving it in the cold
But loving every moment every-time.
Progressions of change measure twine
Notes conclude with one note blend
A musical style that will never end
The soul of Jazz as Jazz is full of soul
And everybody who's somebody knows,
Jazz is the purest sound of music
Because it's the soul of Jazz as Jazz is soul.

Small Still Voices
To every child born and unborn

Small faces,
Faces of future places,
From war torn countries
To a land that's free,
We celebrate these souls.

The future is yours little ones
And before your life is done
We celebrate you
Your whole life through
We celebrate these little souls.

To those ones who are here
Strong and healthy little dears,
To the ones who aren't born yet
We won't forget
You as well those little souls.

Small still voices of our times
The youthful hearts so lovely and kind
We hear you from the distant cry
And when we think of you we know why
You are our dear little souls.

Rain
Shower me
Wash me clean
Let your rain shower me
Wash me redeem me
My soul so I be made whole
Once more
And more
And once more be clean.

Let it rain
Let it pour out on me
Let it rain
Let it drench my very soul
Clean up anything that's not clean
Once more
And once more be clean.

Make me whole
Make me whole again
Within me inside out
Make me whole
In my life let it be pleasing
To You so that
Once more
And once more be clean.

Shower me
Wash me clean
Let your rain shower me...

Poem 2 The Masses
To all who may hear me...

Get it straight from the heart
From this poet
Who dreams as dreamers do,
Watching the clock of time tick away
The hours so new.
And yet we are or seem to be far from u,
Just take a look in the mirror
Look what do u see?
And your response is 2 me that I SEE U!

To all who may see me....

An artist,
A teacher,
A little hope in someone's life
To brighten like days of sunshine and sunrise and sunsets
The nights and days,
The happiness and sorrows of it all
I see u before yourself.
Check in the mirror....
What do u see?
What do u see?
I asked u once more and u just looked at me with eyes of pain
And just sighed looked at me with great sadness.

To all who may BELIEVE....

Father, Son, Holy Ghost!
No one comes before or between them.
Just those three alone is all we need.
Do u believe?
God is Father,
Jesus is Son,
Holy Spirit is the Comforter,
Do u believe?

To those who HOPE....

Peace in this world,
Peace to u,
And peace for me.
Will there be peace?
My hope is buld on God's peace
The peace He only gives us through the Holy Ghost.

To those who love...

Poets and dreamers and artist and musicians
All talked of love and hope to bring it to this tastless, dry
Unforgiving world we live in
And so with that thought
I ask a simple question,
WHERE IS THE LOVE?
I
poet

This
Poem

Masses!

Poem #12
in memory of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes

In hopes that your sleep
Will be the best ever
A sleep that's eternal
In hopes your soul be at rest.
First, hoping that you know Christ
Second, you recognized with others
In hopes your rest is at peace.

We will miss you
Your craziness
Your talent so grand
We will miss you dearly.
Liza you are loved
I pray your soul to be at rest.

Listen UP!!!!
Lend me your ears,
So you can hear,
What I am saying to you
So listen up!!!

The voices in the masses speaks
In volumes so that you may peek
At this world around you
So listen up!!!

The voices of children dying one by one
From the barrels and bullets of guns,
They fall one by one like dominoes
And you need to listen up!!!

This inspires poets like me
To write the truth you see
And bringing to attention around you
Open up your ears and listen up!!!

Lend me your ears
So you can hear
What I am saying to you
So people LISTEN UP!!!

Goodbye
In Memory of Vetta M. Jenkins Mims

One word is so hard to say
To someone like you in every way,
A word that no one wants to whisper in the wind,
Or shout out to the masses,
A word you just can't say to a family member or friend.
But today we say goodbye to you
One last whisper of words expressed so
That we will gladly say but yet know
How we really feel right now.
As painful it seems we collectively come together
To whisper such words
The hardest thing to say as your sun sets looking eastward
Waving to you as you exit this earth
A word of expression---

Goodbye!

Gone
In memory of Martha K. Newton and Amanda P. Newton

and then I looked around.....

I stepped back and breath
Taking each breath like there's no more.
The rush of memories flood my mind
The tears started to flow
And my heart heavy with grief.

I wanted to ask "why Lord why"
But it only comes back in whispers
Like a raindrop following from the sky falling.

There's a time to morn
Remembering the times of our lives.
God knew what was best
In times like these----
Like times like these we need a Savior.

Remembering you---
I took a breath
And you've gone away
Sailed away to the sea so distant.

Remembering you---
I took  a breath
And now you're gone....

Free
I took flight to my Heavenly home
No more tears for me to shed.
And it's in Heaven I shall roam,
When it's all been said---
I'm free yes I am free.

Say goodbye to my family friends for me,
Because I am going to a better place.
No more worries and problems you see,
Because it's in Jesus I'll see face to face---
I'm free yes I am free.

The worries of this world will be less,
And all that was expected of me.
Because where I'm going I'll be blessed
Yes blessed and I'll be free.

Bye bye world no more to be said,
My Savior's taking me home
No more tears yet to be shed
And Heaven is  where I'll surely roam
Because I am yes I shall be free.

Distant Skies
In memory of Pastor James Davis

I looked up in the sky
Beyond the clouds up there
Where Angels dwell among themselves
I didn't see you at all.

My heart heavy in sorrow
Missing you very much and even more
Gone is the smile and joy you left behind.
The meaningful words to encourage us
The things to know in the coming years.

If only you knew what I saying now
And the words of sad refrain spoken
Then you'll hear my heart's beating.

I gazed up in the distant skies
Searching for you and hoping you were there
But I am you weren't there after all
Until I found out you were called home,
Home where you belong
Rest, you need it in the long run.

Color My World
Color my world black,
To match the color of my skin
And that I'll live in total Blackness.
My whole world
Colored to match my heritage
My love for History;
Black History.

I put my trust in God
As I color my world around me
My heritage I treasure
Through God in whom I trust.

Wake Up! Wake Up!
Politicians--
Wake up from your sleep
Of political thinking
High prices, high taxes
And back breaking
It's time to wake up!

Preachers---
Wake up from your sleep,
Preaching sermons of greed
Blinded by the LIGHT
Practicing in the world of ******
It's time to wake up!

Mother---
Wake up from your sleep
Of finding that man
To pay for all your problems
Then away he goes
Away he ran
For it's time to wake up!

Teachers---
Wake up from your sleep
Of educating young minds
Wasting
Their lives away
With them it's hard to find
It's time to wake up!

Father---
Wake up from your sleep
Of being a runaway man
Stand up for yourself
And don't lie down but STAND
'Cause it's time to wake up!

Wake up! Wake up!
Sleeping time is over.
He that sleeps too long
Will miss God at work.
Your very life uncovered
For it's time to wake up!
WAKE UP!
WAKE UP!
WAKE UP!
WAKE UP!
WAKE UP!
GET UP!
WAKE UP!
GET UP!
WAKE UP!
GET UP!
WAKE UP!
GET UP!
GET UP!
WAKE UP!
WAKE UP!
WAKE UP!
WAKE UP!

You see, you make me wanna write,
You make wanna write words
So sweet and on the other hand
Words wind up so tight
Until it squeeze you when you feel me
Setting my poetic heart soaring free
Like a bird flying in mid air
But I don't care
As long as I can bring these poetic words to your ears
Leaving with happiness or either in tears.
I am like an addict unashamed
And an addict by deed and name
Over poetry deep, deep, deep in my soul
No matter how deep or how old
Or how it sounds in words so dear
Until it just burns of your ears.
Fire flame to touch
No but yet not too much
Just a little at a time
With somewhere in there with you on my mind
Because I am an addict for poetry.
Poetry by any means you see
If by anything else is messed up,
Like the Crack head on the streets
I need to be fed my "drug" that inner beast.
No not beast but pleasure deeply so
Until I feel and really know
It's that thing call poetry I am addicted to
Yes, it's very, very, very true
I love poetry for I am an addict.
And if poetry was a woman she would be my mistress,
My chick on the side I won't miss,
For I am an addict baby a poetry ******,
Because I need my fix everyday,
And sometimes i a worst way.
My suppliers range many like Langston and Nikki and Maya and even a Butterfly too
Because I am an addict of poetry and this is very true.
Everytime I mix the poetic lyrical measures spinning in my brain,
As I write them down like a person whose going fool and going insane,
For I am an addict baby; a poetic, lyrical, words spinning miser, spitting out words so,
Addict of rhymes
Endless i space and in time
No matter what moves me
No matter what grroves me
I am  what I am what I am so.
Give me a fix and I'll give you a rhyme
Give a little bit of time
And I'll be spitting out poetry as fast as you can say "BLACK BALL"
I love poetry and I am an addict that's all.
If there was an "Poet's Anonymous" I would be in every meeting everytime,
Spinning a rhyme for you in every way I can find.
My name is____and I am a poetic lyrical of rhyme of a poet
I AM A AN ADDICT----
A POETRY ADDICT!

All of My Tomorrows
I need you.

I need you for all of my tomorrows
So I may understand my yesterdays
But yet bear the pains and sorrows
For future brighter days.

Future days not bright enough for me
to look at and determine why
Or wonder then plainly see
Even when plans fold and die.

Even when heavy in spirit so
I need you then
Before I get too old
Perhaps just a friend.

A hug, a kiss, a peck on the cheek
Some kind of embrace
To raise my peak
This is all I ask face to face.

I need you for all my tomorrows
So I may understand my yesterdays
But yet bear the pains and sorrows
For future brighter days.

poem: summer
the heat of the city
feel it what a pity
for the brothers and sisters who
have 2 come to work for a living as they
living in the city
my Lord what a day!
it finally came my way
to see another god-forsaken heated day.
it's summer time!
summertime---
and the living is hell
can you tell?
from sweat coming off my forehead feeling
thristy and half dead.
yes it's summertime!
it's a hot july
and that's no lie
it's hotter in july, august, september
or did you forget or did u remember
how the summer of long ago was?
it's summertime--
and the living is hell
can you tell?
when the weather is dry?
fish stopped jumping
and that girl is good looking
so rush everybody
to the ac inside...

After The Storm
After the rain stops,
And the thunder rolled,
And the clouds turned gray
By the voice of God
And His handy work
Shown
There's after the storm
And after all there is
After all the world
Noticed what's a new
Just after the storm.

a poem on night
as the ink of pen
long, dark and mysterious
that comes when the stars are up
when the moon is smilin' at the earth
and cool as a wind
for me this night.
must i fear?
must i panic?
must i bless it?
must i curse it?
for i am not afraid
of the night.
and alas when the stars are disappearing
and the moon stops smilin'
and the cool of the wind stops blowin'
there comes--
daybreak among high
God's creation
it's goin' to be a lovely day!
