"sodden" poems
Body of ocean, milk and sky, We are tangled in the hope of night. The lips of the milky way, creaming us, Stains and is **** with a taste keening; All is creation.  My meteors crash Into your ruptured Earth.  I flame Upon your must and moisted furrows And my toes are locked, rooted in yours. Body of ocean, milk and sky, In the deserts of the day you are true Oasis.  The curves and waft of your sands Seethe and sodden my barren plains, Are erasing all my wandering memories Of an endless sky and now your eyes Are the only stars I know, and your skin; A sheet that holds the heavens shimmering. Body of ocean, milk and sky, Your ******* are the heaving of grasses And wind, loft and laden in the rounded Hills, a hoard of ****** bread, bountiful, Ripe and strange.  Your hair is an endless Savannah, your valleys are gold and honeyed With milk, seared, filled by my penetrating sun. In passion we play; low on earth and deep in sky.

Body of Ocean, Milk and Sky
Out of lemon flowers loosed on the moonlight, love's lashed and insatiable essences, sodden with fragrance, the lemon tree's yellow emerges, the lemons move down from the tree's planetarium Delicate merchandise! The harbors are big with it- bazaars for the light and the barbarous gold. We open the halves of a miracle, and a clotting of acids brims into the starry divisions: creation's original juices, irreducible, changeless, alive: so the freshness lives on in a lemon, in the sweet-smelling house of the rind, the proportions, arcane and acerb. Cutting the lemon the knife leaves a little cathedral: alcoves unguessed by the eye that open acidulous glass to the light; topazes riding the droplets, altars, aromatic facades. So, while the hand holds the cut of the lemon, half a world on a trencher, the gold of the universe wells to your touch: a cup yellow with miracles, a breast and a ****** perfuming the earth; a flashing made fruitage, the diminutive fire of a planet.

Sunset is a pretty thing, so bathed in mystery, And yet it is the saddest thing, when drenched with memory, Sodden sunset soak the tears, That fall so endlessly, Silent sunset take my hand, and bring me down with thee.

Silent Sunset
BLESSED be this place, More blessed still this tower; A ****** arrogant power Rose out of the race Uttering, mastering it, Rose like these walls from these Storm-beaten cottages -- In mockery I have set A powerful emblem up, And sing it rhyme upon rhyme In mockery of a time HaIf dead at the top. Alexandria's was a beacon tower, and Babylon's An image of the moving heavens, a log-book of the sun's journey and the moon's; And Shelley had his towers, thought's crowned powers he called them once. I declare this tower is my symbol; I declare This winding, gyring, spiring treadmill of a stair is my ancestral stair; That Goldsmith and the Dean, Berkeley and Burke have travelled there. Swift beating on his breast in sibylline frenzy blind Because the heart in his blood-sodden breast had dragged him down into mankind, Goldsmith deliberately sipping at the honey-pot of his mind, And haughtier-headed Burke that proved the State a tree, That this unconquerable labyrinth of the birds, cen- tury after century, Cast but dead leaves to mathematical equality; And God-appointed Berkeley that proved all things a dream, That this pragmatical, preposterous pig of a world, its farrow that so solid seem, Must vanish on the instant if the mind but change its theme; Saeva Indignatio and the labourer's hire, The strength that gives our blood and state magnani- mity of its own desire; Everything that is not God consumed with intellectual fire. III The purity of the unclouded moon Has flung its atrowy shaft upon the floor. Seven centuries have passed and it is pure, The blood of innocence has left no stain. There, on blood-saturated ground, have stood Soldier, assassin, executioner. Whether for daily pittance or in blind fear Or out of abstract hatred, and shed blood, But could not cast a single jet thereon. Odour of blood on the ancestral stair! And we that have shed none must gather there And clamour in drunken frenzy for the moon. IV Upon the dusty, glittering windows cling, And seem to cling upon the moonlit skies, Tortoiseshell butterflies, peacock butterflies, A couple of night-moths are on the wing. Is every modern nation like the tower, Half dead at the top? No matter what I said, For wisdom is the property of the dead, A something incompatible with life; and power, Like everything that has the stain of blood, A property of the living; but no stain Can come upon the visage of the moon When it has looked in glory from a cloud.

Compelled by calamity's magnet They loiter and stare as if the house Burnt-out were theirs, or as if they thought Some scandal might any minute ooze From a smoke-choked closet into light; No deaths, no prodigious injuries Glut these hunters after an old meat, Blood-spoor of the austere tragedies. Mother Medea in a green smock Moves humbly as any housewife through Her ruined apartments, taking stock Of charred shoes, the sodden upholstery: Cheated of the pyre and the rack, The crowd ***** her last tear and turns away.

Sweet Siren Song
You are velvet under my fingertips, honey on my tongue. So, love me. Everything about you is lovable. Everything about you draws me in. Love me. Love me. Pour your love out onto me, kiss me with the kisses of your mouth, lavishing them from my neck to my thighs, ******* roughly on my soft, supple skin. Love me. Let me take you in. Let me kiss the breadth of your chest, let me caress your sweet, endearing face, love me, love me, let me pour my love out over you, onto you, into you. I want to hear how much you love how I love you. I don't. I want to press kisses against all your bruises. You soften my sodden heart. You're so pitiful it's endearing. My poor boy. My poor poor boy. Please don't cry, or I'll want to comfort you. Please don't look so sad. Don't look like you love me, or it might make me love you.

We are mesmerized as the purple twilight darkens the day to night So serene as the sun radiates its last beams of light The holes in my heart that once reminded me of the sandy shore Have now been washed away by your love forevermore Lay down with me on the colorful coral beds all aglow Lets hide out from the world in the soundless surface below Alluring tongue brings forth this lustrous pearl of mine The sea calls out but has no hold in my lapse of time You drink in the cool dark depths of me And then you permeate in your very own sodden sea

A Kiss
In the rectory garden on his evening walk Paced brisk Father Shawn. A cold day, a sodden one it was In black November. After a sliding rain Dew stood in chill sweat on each stalk, Each thorn; spiring from wet earth, a blue haze Hung caught in dark-webbed branches like a fabulous heron. Hauled sudden from solitude, Hair prickling on his head, Father Shawn perceived a ghost Shaping itself from that mist. 'How now,' Father Shawn crisply addressed the ghost Wavering there, gauze-edged, smelling of woodsmoke, 'What manner of business are you on? From your blue pallor, I'd say you inhabited the frozen waste Of hell, and not the fiery part. Yet to judge by that dazzled look, That noble mien, perhaps you've late quitted heaven?' In voice furred with frost, Ghost said to priest: 'Neither of those countries do I frequent: Earth is my haunt.' 'Come, come,' Father Shawn gave an impatient shrug, 'I don't ask you to spin some ridiculous fable Of gilded harps or gnawing fire: simply tell After your life's end, what just epilogue God ordained to follow up your days. Is it such trouble To satisfy the questions of a curious old fool?' 'In life, love gnawed my skin To this white bone; What love did then, love does now: Gnaws me through.' 'What love,' asked Father Shawn, 'but too great love Of flawed earth-flesh could cause this sorry pass? Some ****** condition you are in: Thinking never to have left the world, you grieve As though alive, shriveling in torment thus To atone as shade for sin that lured blind man.' 'The day of doom Is not yest come. Until that time A crock of dust is my dear hom.' 'Fond phantom,' cried shocked Father Shawn, 'Can there be such stubbornness-- A soul grown feverish, clutching its dead body-tree Like a last storm-crossed leaf? Best get you gone To judgment in a higher court of grace. Repent, depart, before God's trump-crack splits the sky.' From that pale mist Ghost swore to priest: 'There sits no higher court Than man's red heart.'

A night sometime in mid-July and darkness hums between the trees. My eyes look across sodden grass for another life to waddle past. A creature, a ball of bristles appears from the bushes, listen out for a snuffle, a mumble. There, by the fence, a wooden coat speckled with milk. Its movement lazy like a man on a summer Sunday walk home. Does it come often? I wonder as a breeze races over my lawn. A sniff of a fallen branch before shuffling along. The evening crawls on, a caterpillar over a leaf. I decide to wait a while, watch my guest awake, alive.

Sweat and Pimms
I wish that I could crochet in the bath. I would lie a board across the ledges, if I had one long enough As my fingers intertwined in the soft wool Little water droplets would settle Like frozen tears of glass. That would just be for a moment, before it grew heavy and sodden. I've read like that before, the pages have become crispy and smudged That shows love and warmth But wet wool seems cold and miserable. If I dropped a needle in the water it would become rusty, Useless and uncomfortable. I would crochet in the bath, but I don't think I could find a board long enough.

Hang me in the sky And peg your love on me Lay me on the moon And pierce my mind with stars.... Plop me on a nimbus cloud Nay, I will not fall through Forsooth, I'll sail on wind and gale To catch that kite to you! How I long for that box to open Oh, do lemme out! I smell the breeze.... On Celestial Kites
All I see is up The pink flower stretches to forever at the sky I stare wishing to be among the clouds Its anterior filters the sun’s warmth upon my soft arms I sit upon the dark, sodden, summer earth I am all to myself. Alone. At home under their stems So benign am I encased by the pink flower The pink flower trembles under slight hand of a summer breeze Honeyed are its petals, But dangerous is its center Pricking my delicate fingers If I am not careful Yet I watch a dragonfly land on it with grace            Fragile insect legs grip tightly at the miniature pointed peaks Wind caresses wisps of hair around my petite face I am like a fairy Not knowing the wonders of the world Only the kingdom of the pink flower Moisture sweetens the air Drenching it with the breath of nature Almost as if a mother is breathing comfort into my small body

Echinacea (My Mother’s Garden)
Sun swollen reddening as it sank that brutal ****** disc scored by church steeples and chimney stacks almost lost in the drifting haze of sulphurous yellow and char-black smoke. Duck boards dip into the sodden earth as men ***** along in conga lines holding tight the pack of the man in front, lest they should slip lose quick their footing be ****** down and smothered by mud. The walls of the tunnels are packed earth rich with blood and bone bits and pieces of human anatomy dangle and hang as if posed by an artist with a strange and cruel eye for detail. The scrabble for fox holes and rough scraped ditches, anywhere, below the line of fire. The ting and whiz-bang of a night of action The whistle, the dash and the forward push counted more in men than metres. © M.L.Emmett

The Somme Sunset
Beneath the surface of the earth, Beneath the green and sodden turf, Wendy wombat, supreme digger Raced to make her tunnels bigger, Pulling dirt with mighty claws And toiling hard without a pause Ensconced within her little pouch, So small they had no need to crouch, Her children slept, all warm and dry, As mud and dirt went flying by, Quite unaware how nature planned To lend them all a helping hand For wombat pouches don't get full Of dirt and mud as mommies pull, For mother nature in her wisdom Looked upon her magic kingdom, Saw the wombats under ground And wisely turned their pouches round!

Wendy the Wombat

Mystery; Such that you were to me But nervously I swayed in your direction Curious; I couldn't help but catch my breath as you spoke of this dismal city and your photography So caught in your wishes to escape back to your summer adventures to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and Seoul; it was then you felt such anonymity So it was then you had felt free. I look to you again, piecing you in these things that you dare share with me; so easily, eagerly. Quiet now, you look to me but I apologize, I didn't know quite where to begin. Mist and fluttering snow Clouding over our concrete city, We walked below the looming Buildings until pausing, to take a picture of me. It seemed, in this hour, it was only us who chose to walk through these deserted snowed-in streets You suggested something then, offering to take me up to the top of the sleekest buildings, to your rooftop sanctuaries I longed to see until it was only in my view- small specks of life below me where I could only see my sodden shoes dangle down to nothingness, to air, weightlessly as I taste the mist upon my shoulders and frozen hair. In awe I would laugh at the beautiful sight before me- to Skyscrapers that cut above clouds in the glint of the sun reflecting back to our eyes, and our cheeks who also felt the bite of winter's winds. Shivering, Soaked in hair and feet and Again I turned to face you but here, with glittering eyes, ... wondered where You would then choose to take me on our second date?                                                                 P.K.

... Some people like fall, but not me. It's full of death and decay, the gorgeous pieces of fire drift from their skeletal homes and burn out into sodden mushy brown paper. Hard smooth and brown pebbles, spiky holey bombs, and twirly helicopter blades fall from the same skeletons and hide beneath the paper, waiting for an innocent victim, lying in the perfect position to slip someone up so that they lose their bags and packages as they themselves go slip slide crashing into the ground. The victims are sure to rise up again, but with some bruises and bits of soggy brown, stuck all over their clothes In fall, all the blooms of color decease, all fruit and vegetable and good green things die and leaves the world sodden mushy and brown. Some people say they like winter, but not me. It's a cold cruel and heartless season, robbing any last trace of life from all helpless and left-behind creatures. The vegetation becomes glazed over with melting glass and is the one spot of beauty, as the only green left resides on prickly evergreens, housebound plants, and the occasional tacky coat. In winter, there is no way to leave your personal fortress without mountains of clothes, and so every person becomes a chapped lipped, red cheeked, stiff fingered puffball. Every time you jump into a mound of the white fluff that accompanies the dread season, some is bound to creep into your shirt and boots, freezing whatever it touches, and then ever so so slowly flowing along your skin, one of Gaia's little tortures.

The Sounding Foam of Primal Things *(The title and the poem, taken from and inspired by Carl Sandburg's "Who Am I?") wind and rain pound the surf. snow falls on the beach, on the shore. man-observer cannot tell: has the earth gone mad, all wet? do the seas rise, whipped up, filling the heavens, or does the white rain replenishes the very body, from whence it came, and now returns? this matters greatly, yet nothing answers this, his question. the furious soundings, the green foam churn, the silence of no response inebriates, drunk on the tempest's hard wet liquor, weighed down, sodden with the despair, solitude, silence, absent answers, his natural walking companions! No Stopping signs on almost every corner, Do Not Pass, Do Not Enter, One Way, Two Way, No Thru Passage, but the one sign he seeks, "Stay On The Path" absent. Eluded, dispassionate endings, the essential quietude among furious surround-sounds of creative destruction he ceases to ask, for unanswered, undirected. Concluded, either their is no one listening, or, there is no one caring, or, Deluded, illusion is truth, he is an illusion. ------------------
