Joanne told me they would be clapped out.
Radio Luxembourg wouldn't play them.
No Glam you see,
frayed collars, Bar room Blues.
But I'm still into Bees make Honey.
Pawned my Zenith Quad-8 for a Seiko LCD Quartz.
Memorised Ashai Pentax's Reason #44.
Still have the hots for Marisa Berenson's knees.
No censure.

German refugee husband: “Liebchen – sweetness – what watch?”

German refugee wife: “Ten watch.”

Husband: “Such watch?”

Carl the Bartender: “You will get along beautifully in America.”

I check the time on my retirement watch
(A Seiko; they did not think much of me)
And consider that there is no time at all
Unless Creation is some sort of clock

Childhood is watchless, timeless, careless, free
But adults must be catalogued and timed:
Bulova, Timex, Rolex, and Longines
And even a railway Regulator

I check the time on my retirement watch -
And hustle off to my chapter two job

Me, God’s gift to women
yeah that’ll be the day
I am not like some others
can’t say the things they say

I can’t belittle women
don’t brag about the ***
Shouting size does matter
in line waiting the next

I do not have big muscles
my abs are made of brew
My arms are kind of scrawny
my legs are that way too

Don’t drive a brand new Audi
(I rented up the street)
Wear hundred dollar tennis shoes
upon my two left feet

My watch it is a Seiko
I bought the thing on sale
I do not have a golden tan
I’m really kind of pale

I do not think I’m cooler
than anyone around
And women would be lucky
if it was me they found

I never have been wealthy
my wallet isn’t fat
I don’t have several ladies names
scribbled in a tat

But then it doesn’t matter
what I have said above
I have a special woman
and I am so in love

She really thinks I’m perfect
just the way I am
Says I treat her wonderful,
she’s glad I am her man

She always makes me happy
for her I do the same
I’m not God’s gift to women
and surely won’t complain

For what I’ve have is true love
the best that there can be
I do not need to be a God
if she’s in love with me
I look to the past
and I am reminded
of how my father
abused his lungs
for a buck and twenty years.

The only thing he has to show for it
is a small pension, a Seiko watch
and an oxygen tank.

At 84 his mind is keen
but he can't even water the flowers
without losing his breath.

Every year that passes
he says it's going to be his last.
He just sent me his engraved watch
telling me it's a keepsake.

When the dealer has dealt
his last hand, I want to be there,
like it was when I was a kid
and I didn't even know what
'pour me *******' meant.

All he says to me now is
"don't hang your head in shame,
hold your head high
when you come face to face
with your maker".

I’m a native Babylonian
Born with blood from others like me
A strong Babylonian mother who clothed and fed
Cultured by my media, a shaved disciple before a glowing screen
I breath in unison, initiated into the cult of this land
My heart dreams in Babylonian.

Not sure what to think when others
Further along than I
Declare their proud independence
“I am in this world, but not of it, a stranger in a strange land!”
Sipping Starbucks and glancing at their Seiko.

I still unbuckle my discolored jeans
They quietly pile on the cold tile floor around my bare ankles
I sit on a white Babylonian throne
Relieving myself from the burdens of waste
Thin paper wipes the excess, fragrant soap and warm water combine to clean
A daily reminder of where I’m from.

I can’t invade this land
A missionary zealot with appropriate passion
I’m one of them and this land is already mine
I’m changed, yes, I am newly alive
A clean heart fixed to a renewing mind.

But I know my stripes
I know my noise and my quietness
I have hope for where I go
I walk newly now
But as a Babylonian with love
Among my people.
I spent many years trying to understand a Christian faith. At the time, there was a lot of discussion about "being a missionary" to your own land. "Engaging those around you" as if they were . . . something else.
